Explores the connections between greater Atlantic Ocean commerce and those northern European businesses that invested in and profited from the slave trade, from the 16th century to 1888, the year that Brazil outlawed slavery - the last country in the Americas to do so. Presents the results of an in-depth case study of the predecessors of the Dutch bank ABN AMRO regarding their financial involvement in the Atlantic slave trade and its extensive commercial network in the Western Hemisphere, which was centered on the Americas.

In commemorating the sesquicentennial of the 1854 Kansas- Nebraska Act, it is important to understand not only the events that led to and were caused by its passage but also the very organic act itself.' This piece of national legislation caused great tension in the halls of Congress before being passed and also great tension in the very territories it organized after its passing. The most shocking example of these tensions was the mini civil war, commonly known as "Bleeding Kansas," which some historians suggest represents the first battles of the much greater Civil War. The intersections of virtual worlds, imagined communities and ``real life´´ are producing complex liminal spaces that social scientists are gradually surveying. Although their economic potential and impact has been examined in great detail, the extensive effect they have on international relations and trade is so far largely unmapped. The paper will discuss the various spaces where the existence of virtual societies change the way countries and societies interact with one another, detailing the effect on culture, division of labour and international trade. Economics

Increasing commercialization, population growth and concurrent increases in land value have affected women's land rights in Africa. Most of the literature concentrates on how these changes have led to an erosion of women's rights. This paper examines some of the processes by which women's rights to land are diminishing. First, we examine cases where rights previously utilized have become less important; that is, the incidence of exercising rights has decreased. Second, we investigate how women's rights to land decrease as the public meanings underlying the social interpretation and enforcement of rights are manipulated. In Fall 2008, UTEP's composition department implemented a pilot program to test a redesign of English 1312, their second-semester freshman composition course. In addition to a redesigned curriculum, a system of electronic distributed assessment was implemented in ten sections of English 1312. Instead of the traditional format of a class where instructors grade all student assignments, a group of teaching assistants graded student writing anonymously using standardized grading rubrics. The system, which has been used at Texas Tech University since 2002, was put in place at UTEP in order to enhance efficiency and consistency in the teaching of this course. …

Guinevere has existed in literature for nearly a millennium, evolving to suit societal values and mores. She has metamorphosed from Arthur’s noble queen to Lancelot’s jealous lover, from a motherly sovereign to a vindictive adulteress as each author struggled to apply his own literary and societal conventions to a character that is both inherited and created.

This thesis seeks to identify patterns of villainy in late nineteenth-century detective fiction in order to examine middle class conceptions of criminality and the way those models reflect the values of Victorian society. Through a study of more than sixty pieces of short detective fiction, this study identifies and focuses on six primary categories: the visual depiction of the criminal, the criminal class, the jewelry heist, the colonial subject, the violent female offender, and the domestic villain. Democratic Failure: Tracking The Ebb Of Democracy's Flow, 1800–2006, Sanja E. Sray

Scant attention has focused on the systematic study of democratic failure. This dissertation partially corrects this oversight. Tracing the roots of antidemocratic sentiment across the centuries, it first argues that the advance of institutions, fueled by underlying shifts in values and innovation in political philosophy, was key to freeing democracy from its bondage as a most disparaged form of governance. Focusing on the measurable aspects of these institutions, the study focuses on describing patterns of behavior when democracies fail. First, it shows that there have been clusters of democratic failure. These clusters, or counterwaves, find their roots in ancient antidemocratic …

This presentation from the 2008 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) offers results from an a study of text-to-speech software in a writing center and explores the effect that writing centers and tutors have on students’ use of and attitudes toward technology and writing. Initial results confirm our hypothesis that Kurzweil’s text-to-speech features provides considerable benefit to students, and that students identified additional errors during the revision and editing stages of writing than during revision done independently.

Wyndham Lewis was one of the few early critics of Ulysses to see that, like Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom is a Joycean self-portrait.1 Driven by his anti-Semitism, Lewis was irritated by the sympathy Joyce garnered by portraying himself as a Jew. In Time and Western Man, he complains that Bloom has too much dramatic power: As it is, of course, the author, thinly disguised as a middle-aged Jew tout (Mr. Leopold Bloom), wins the reader’s sympathy every time he appears; and he never is confronted with the less and less satisfactory Dedalus (in the beau role) without the latter losing …

Problem

The Collegedale Community Seventh-day Adventist Church has never had a program to teach lay people how to preach. Preaching is one of God’s methods for sharing the gospel and winning souls for His kingdom. Teaching lay people to preach will increase the spread of the gospel.

Method

Spiritual gifts for preaching were used as the means of selecting lay people for the preaching class. They were taught how to study the Bible, discern sermon ideas, write out a sermon and how to present a sermon.

According to the 1984 Annual Council policy, Seventh-day Adventist ministers are to provide premarital guidance to couples requesting marriage. Where possible, this preparation of the couple should consist of several counseling sessions conducted by the minister who is to perform the service or by another qualified individual. Despite its obvious importance, this policy has not been seriously considered or implemented in Russia.

Members of the Bladensburg Seventh-day Adventist Church expressed a desire establish closer bonds within the congregation and community. The lack of close friendships within the church fellowship led to several members transferring to other area churches.
