Repossessing Identity: The Work Of Rita Ann Higgins, Jeanine Alene Bator

William Butler Yeats's (1865-1939) work harkens back to an idyllic Ireland-a mythic land of heroes. Through his and others' depiction of Ireland as an idealized space, Yeats furthered the myth of the Mother Ireland figure. Due to this representation, female Irish writers, like Eavan Boland (1944- ), find that Irish women have not only been written out of the canon, but also out of the fabric of history. Thus, this study examines the works of lrish poet Rita Ann Higgins (1955-) through the lens of the Yeatsian tradition, which has long defined Irish identity. Higgins writes in direct contrast to …

The Usage Of Causatives In Classical Chinese: A Review, Suree Choonharuangdej

Many scholars have looked into relevant problems concerning the usage of causatives in their studies of Classical Chinese grammar. They find that, unlike the derivational system found in most Indo-European languages, the system of word-derivation in Classical Chinese (causative usage included) reveals that certain grammatical and semantic contrasts are regularly associated with tonal contrasts. In spite of such findings, we still consider it rather difficult to separate those derivational causative verbs from the general causative usage to which the syntactic structure is ascribed, not to mention the even harder task of distinguishing the causative usage from the putative one given …

This article surveys ideas of the future?€"specifically whether it will be (i) worse, (ii) the same, or (iii) better, for individuals and/or society?€"in the Pali imaginaire, a corpus of texts produced and circulated in the agrarian states of premodern South and Southeast Asia and which survives as a resource for Buddhists in the vastly changed conditions of the modern, globalized world.

Compact City Strategy Of Bangkok Mega City, Chaweewan Denpaiboon, Hidehiko Kanegae

The objectives of this study encompass three aspects. First, it analyzes the Bangkok Mega-City Model in three sub-areas around the New Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Second, it analyzes the compact city policy to measure factors of the compact city based on affordable transportation costs related to household income, jobhousing balance, and facilities. Third, it analyzes household commuting travel using modeling displays with visual simulation. The results show that the compact city strategy can shed light on the lifestyle of residents in a mega-city. Modernist Thai Short Stories, 1964-1973: The Relationship With Art, Soranat Tailanga

A number of distinguished Thai short stories from 1964 to 1973 revealed new and distinctive features in terms of subject, form, concepts, and style. These features were similar to those of Modernism, which was an international movement in literature and the arts that began in the late 19th century and continued into the early 20th century. The similarity suggests the direct and indirect influences of the modernist styles upon Thai writers. Furthermore, the change in style of some of the short stories indicates a relationship with the art movement: Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, which were subsidiary art movements within Modernism. …

Cinematic Literature, Literary Cinema, And The Assembly Of Cities: Bangkok Inscribed, Noah Vernes

This article suggests that an aesthetics of contemporary urban life builds new avenues for treating the politics of visibility. Several reasons instigate this new approach. First, art forms illustrate and train a specific way of ?seeing,? a camera consciousness, that correlates with changes in the built landscape. A specific configuration, in other words, presents a relationship (an analogy) between the contemporary predominance of urban images and urban subjects that elude preexisting categories. These aesthetic departures can be illustrated by literary and cinematic ?sentence-images? within the project that Jacques Rancière (2004; 2006; 2007) calls the ?redistribution of the sensible.? 作者認為文學是教育中不可缺少的成分，它可説是社會、文化與人的「情感教育」。若果一個社會對文學教育不夠重視，它或會因此而有所缺失，甚至乎會喪失「集體回憶」。不同地區的文學教育的表達或體現可以是多形式，包括獨立課程，如香港，或融入語文課程之內，如內地及台灣。教材出版，則是體現課程、展現課程的工具，用以協助教與學，因此兩者的關係極為密切。已故的出版家及社會語言學家陳原曾著有一書：《書和人和我》（1994），以出版人的身份去談書與人的關係，以及彼此間的種種聯想與抒發。從來出版人的終極關心都是文化和人，作者在此書的啟發下，去思考文學教育的發展，並嘗試借用陳原的説法，從人出發。從人去看書，看人需要怎樣的書；再從書去看人，看書怎樣可形塑人。

尋求新路向 :《海光文藝》研究 = In Search Of New Direction : Research On Hai Guang Literature, Wing Mui Cheung

要了解香港文學的發展，除了研究文學作品以外，其他如文藝雜誌、出版機構、作家社團等，都對作品的產生和流傳有重要的影響。不同出版機構編印的刊物，往往因應不同編輯方針而呈現相異的風貌，創作風格相類的作家，也容易因投稿或辦刊物的關係，凝聚成不同的社團或文學流派，這些文學作品以外的現象，與文學發展有千絲萬縷的聯繫。因此，筆者嘗試以一份文藝雜誌、——《海光文藝》為切入點，探討雜誌與文藝思潮發展的關係。由於本文以文藝雜誌為研究對象，因此不擬在文中作詳細的作品分析，筆者會集中討論刊物的整體特色，探討其創辦動機及編輯方針如何影響刊物的風格，再透過與其他同期刊物比較，看它在香港文學發展歷程中的地位和影響，希望透過《海光文藝》，看一九六〇年代中後期香港文學發展的一個側面。

起源及其變體 : 香港作家、香港文學與香港新詩 = The Origin And Its Variant : Hong Kong Writers, Literature And Poetry, Chi Tak Chan

在現代文學的研究當中，中國作家和台灣作家的定義問題沒有很大爭議，但當人們討論香港作家或香港文學時，往往在定義及相關爭議上糾纒不清，「香港作家」尤其是一個經常受質疑的概念。香港作家往往要為自己的身份和「香港」的合法性自辯，其間又會發現簡單的居民身份，如是否擁有香港身份證等實不足以界定「香港作家」。筆者過去在研究香港文學的過程中，除了史料的發掘和整理之外，首先處理的也是定義和身份的界定，期間覺察一個頗為關鍵的問題，就是在不同年代，香港作家、香港文學與香港新詩的意涵並非固定。本文把問題上溯至一九二、三〇年代，透過回顧早年香港作者對「香港文壇」、「香港詩歌」及相關問題的討論，嘗試在地理或地域的意涵以外，從文學觀念的起源及其變體上，重思香港作家、香港文學與香港新詩的構成。

香港短篇小說中的「北方記憶」與「革命想像」 = Remembering The North And Imagining The Revolution : Hong Kong Short Stories, Zidong Xu

本文試圖重新閱讀一九七〇到九〇年代四篇香港短篇小說，以討論香港小中「北方記憶」和「革命想像」之異同。所謂「北方記憶」泛指一些南來作家對「前半生」社會及生活狀況的記憶、記錄或遺忘情況。「大陸前半生」通常要靠「香港後半生」才能梳理，但也同時會影響制約「香港後半生」的生態心態。所謂「革命想像」則泛指早年來港或在本港土生土長作家們對北方中國革命 （尤其是「文化大革命」） 的非感性經驗，這些有關中國革命的想像方式不僅為香港故事提供邏輯前因，而且更重要的是香港故事同時又為這些中國革命困局找出頗有創意的解決方案。

這篇拙文擬討論香港與台灣之間的文學因緣，由於論述對象有其特殊性，所以下文中有部分我會依學術慣例撰寫，而其他一一尤其涉及當代者——我則可能得跳出此一規範，由個人的經驗出之，回憶色彩可能重了些。此外，撰寫前我讀到了鄭樹森著《從諾貝爾到張愛玲》，後來又翻了梁秉鈞著《香港文化空間與文學》與單德興剛剛發表的〈冷戰時代的美國文學中譯：今日世界出版社之文學翻譯與文化政治〉，因三者都有專文——或本身即為專文——涉及香港與台灣之間的文學關係，而且各個寫得面廣而度深，是以除了徵引上的必要外，我也會盡量避開三氏業已談過者，一切但以個人管見所及為主。崔顥既已題了詩，眼前之景，我怎道得？
