A Simple Plan, A Simple Faith: Chaplain And Local Congregant Strategies For Sharing Faith In The Prison Context, Jessica P. Shoemaker

As the prison population in the United States continues to expand, so too has the use of faith-based prison programs as tools for correctional treatment. Using in-depth interviews with thirty current prison chaplains and local religious congregants in Mississippi, I explore the strategies and techniques used by prison ministry workers in their work with inmates. Two overarching themes emerged from the narratives of prison ministry work. The first is that the ministry workers were careful to avoid setting or focusing on numeric goals for religious conversions before interacting with the inmates. Stochastic Energetics Of The Buttiker-Landauer Motor And Refrigerator, Ronald Benjamin

We investigated the energetics of a Brownian motor driven by position dependent temperature, commonly known as the B¨uttiker-Landauer motor. Overdamped models (M = 0) predict that the motor can attain Carnot efficiency. However, the overdamped limit (M → 0), contradicts the previous prediction due to the kinetic energy contribution to the heat transfer. Using molecular dynamics simulation and numerical solution of the inertial Langevin equation, we confirmed that the motor can never achieve Carnot efficiency and verified that the heat flow via kinetic energy diverges asM−1/2 in the overdamped limit. Grammar Inference is the process of learning a grammar from examples, either positive (i.e., the grammar generates the string) and/or negative (i.e., the grammar does not generate the string). Although grammar inference has been successfully applied to many diverse domains such as speech recognition and robotics, its application to software engineering has been limited. This dissertation addresses the use of literature in support of political ideologies, starting from the cases of Louis Aragon and Pierre Drieu La Rochelle. Aragon and Drieu wrote extensively about man’s alienation in the modern world and, more importantly, about the possibility of overcoming that alienation. Both argued for the creation of a new man who could erect a new world on the ruins of the old. Because the traditional liberal understanding of toleration has been formalistic rather than substantive, the question of where to draw the line between "tolerable" and "intolerable" remains. One approach, borrowing the concept of profound offense from legal philosophy, is to locate the line of separation between "tolerable" and "intolerable" at the notion of profound offense.

Although US universities in the early twentieth century offered the promise of meritocratic entry into the academic profession via the graduate training they provided, they did not fulfill that promise for women. Most women who trained for the PhD in social sciences—the focus of this chapter—and who remained in academia could only find positions in colleges. There they pursued scholarship, teaching, and service, the three central activities of the professional scholar, but found themselves restricted by the expectations of large teaching loads, limited resources, and lack of opportunity to train graduate students in these largely teaching institutions. The shift in the American economic viewpoint before and after World War I left an indelible mark on the arts, allowing the only indigenous music to arise, jazz. In the transitory period following the war, it was George Gershwin who paved the way for jazz to become America's only indigenous music. Yet, the current definition of jazz is so racially polarized that it has lost focus on the music. This work explores George Gershwin's role in creating a jazz culture in a xenophobic country and argues for an inclusive definition of jazz, one based on the music itself.
