In this paper I explore how with Nervous Conditions (1988) and She No Longer Weeps (1987), Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga creates alternative literary forms in her representation of architectural, bodily and narrative spaces and their relationship to female identities. These physical spaces the women characters inhabit, resist and in which they assert their voices must be cleared of patriarchal control in order for female-centered space to be produced. Moreover, the creation of a new speech paradigm, one that affirms the female voice, is crucial to the journey towards female autonomy. Works of microcultural relevance are characterized by being read and valued primarily within the confines of a given culture. They sometimes do not transcend their own linguistic, geographical, and cultural borders, but rather, bestow upon a country, a territory, or in this case, an island, a sense of identity. Without these works, the cultural profile of a people would be blurred and even non-existent. Consequently, the fact that a work fails to speak to other cultural and linguistic contexts may actually attest to its literary importance. Many of the female characters in the Gothic thrillers of Louisa May Alcott wear masks or are or portrayed as “actresses” who conceal their passion with the appearance of being the typical domestic woman. This idea is most clearly presented in “Behind a Mask” and “Pauline’s Passion and Punishment.” In these thrillers, hidden passion causes problems in each heroine’s life, either because her strong will is an unacceptable female characteristic and she will therefore be shunned in some way by society or by those dear to her; or, expressing her passion will result in disaster of some kind. This master’s thesis examines and analyzes how gender and race, as represented in literature during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, impact the development of the female character. Race specifically affects the woman’s perception of her own self as a foreigner, and this self-perception relates to the development of her character. The subjects of this thesis, Lettres d’une Péruvienne by Françoise de Graffigny and Ourika by Claire de Duras, contain female protagonists who are of foreign origin living in France.

The purpose of this thesis is to reveal Paul Gauguin’s expression of his theosophical beliefs in his 1891 painting la Orana Maria. Through extensive research into Gauguin’s system of beliefs on art and religion I intend to demonstrate the likelihood that the tenets of Theosophy would have appealed to his spiritual and aesthetic sensibilities. Gauguin’s involvement in the Symbolist movement, his mystical inclinations, the desire to understand and attain enlightenment, his knowledge of, and respect for religions of the East, and his fascination with the “primitive” are all addressed as pathways that led him to express his theosophical beliefs in …

Intellectual Property In The Age Of Digital Reproduction, David Sandoval

This article explores the challenges of intellectual property in a digital world. Focusing on the work of Graffiti Research Lab (GRL), the article discusses how artists use open-source tools to resist corporate control of public space, but also how these same tools are often co-opted by the very systems they oppose. Through examples like LED throwies, Laser Tag, and Creative Commons licenses, the article examines the limits of current copyright models and the blurred lines between commercial and non-commercial use.

This article introduces an art and research project centered on a surplus FEMA travel trailer delivered to MIT which is used as a focal point of a course taught by Jae Rhim Lee. Lee uses the trailer to explore broader issues of environmental justice, government failure, and the health effects of disaster response. The project connects to another one of her projects, N=1=0=Infinity, a proposal for eco-friendly burial methods using mushrooms to return the body’s nutrients to the Earth.

On Green Technology, Julia Butterfly Hill

In this article, Hill shares a reflection on how humanity has lost its sense of connection with the Earth and each other, a disconnection she calls “Separation Syndrome.” Hill explores how technology can either harm or help depending on how we use it. She encourages artists and creators to approach technology and the environment with connected consciousness, using creativity for healing, sustainability, and transformation.

In this feature, Manteau-Rao reflects on her personal journey from traditional object-based art to a more environmentally conscious practice, questioning the moral responsibilities of artists in a time of climate crisis. The Politicization Of Everyday Life In Cleave's Weekly Police Gazette (1834-36), Edward Jacobs

With circulation as high as 40,000, Cleave's Weekly Police Gazette, published 1834–36, was one of the first and most popular unstamped newspapers to mix political news with coverage of non-political events like sensational crimes, strange occurrences, and excerpts from popular fiction. Scholars have differed widely in their interpretations of the fact that the paper's mixture of radical politics and "entertainment" outsold unstamped papers that offered undiluted political news, such as Hetherington's Poor Man's Guardian (1831–35), whose circulation peaked at around 16,000. Some, like Louis James and Virginia Berridge, argue that Cleave's helped to co-opt legitimate working-class political discourse by …

The cool early morning light casts an eerie stillness over the swimming pool in Paul Fenniak’s painting Short Cut (2006). The protagonist, a young woman with mousy brown hair and a sturdy build, carries a satchel and hunches forward midstride along the right edge of the pool. She looks toward the background of the painting, away from the viewer and across the water. Perhaps she is taking a surreptitious detour through this closed and empty space on her way to school. As interesting as it is, my aim in this paper, however, is not to mark the various trends that have come and gone in the history of semantics. Rather, I consider how semantics has treated a small portion of language that involving demonstrative expressions in order to flesh out how semantics simpliciter has fallen on a mistake; or more accurately, a misdiagnosis. The 1980s were classified as a time of “national awakening” (Goodlad, 1990, p. 1) to the complexities of restructuring our schools. Educational problems ranging from high drop out rates to low test scores could not be adequately and professionally addressed until the nation’s leaders acknowledged that “the renewal of schools, teachers and the programs that educate teachers must proceed simultaneously” (Goodlad, 1990. p. 4).

Christina Belcher is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada and an adjunct of the Education Department at Trinity Western University in Langley, BC. She is passionate about children’s literature and is interested in how narratives provoke hope, reveal cultural dispositions, and shape the soul. Her broad interests and areas of writing include literacy, worldview, and interdisciplinary study. She has previously served in teacher education in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Christina is currently a Doctoral Candidate at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

香港專欄作家十三妹在一九五○年代末突然冒起，以隨筆、漫談吸引了大量讀者。她從來不與報紙編輯或其他專欄作家見面，因而予人神秘之感；但她又在專欄里坦然自述身世和生活，恣意批評政治、社會、文化各方面的現象，樹敵無數。十三妹以寫作為生，卻自言與同行格格不入，本文嘗試利用十三妹專欄裏的豐富材料，勾勒五、六○年代香港職業寫作人的形態，並通過十三妹涉及的紛爭，探討當時文學圏裹的權力關係。
