Doppelganger, Dreams, And Delusions: A Freudian Reading Of Marie Eugenie Delle Grazie’S Der Schatten, Jared Löhrmann

Marie Eugenie delle Grazie’s drama Der Schattenpremiered in 1902 in the Hofburgtheater, Vienna’s most prestigious stage at the time. The play deals with the poet Ernst Werner and his encounter with a character called “Der Schatten”. The Shadow is Werner’s double, meaning that it looks like the poet, but it does not have all of the abilities of a human. Although the idea of a double or “Doppelgänger” is ubiquitous in the literature and art of Fin-de-Siècle Vienna, delle Grazie approaches the topic from a different angle. Not Another Grim(M) Tale: The Rights Of Passage In Marie Von Olfers’ “Little Princess”, Bernadette H. Hyner

If we accept, as Edward Said suggests, that the terms authorship and authority both emphasize a writer’s capacity to establish an alternative discourse, control, and preserve it, then Marie von Olfers is best remembered as a tale spinner who redrafts conventional gender designations in her fairy tales. Specifically, her narrative “Little Princess,” published in 1862, presents alternative interpretations of female agency and sisterhood, while it also debases traditional concepts of family. Von Olfers’ unusual reading of these topics suggests that she construes family and rites of passage in response, perhaps even in opposition, to her male predecessors’ more traditional approach …

Music-making, fundamentally a communal practice, is the source of aesthetic, emotional, and spiritual experience of a kind comparable to the Faustian "moment" (Augenblick). The most ideal musical culture is one in which no clear dividing line exists between practitioners and listeners, professionals and amateurs, the remnants of which are still discernible in present-day Thai classical music. The growing professionalism has been exploited by commercial manipulations driven by money and technology, resulting in a smug, push-button consumerism that treats music as a mere commodity. Noun Classifier Constructions In Thai: A Case Study Of Construction Grammar, Unchalee Singnoi

This paper is a study in the framework of Construction Grammar that seeks for how much information grammatical units like noun classifier constructions in Thai can reveal and why such information must be presented as distinctive grammatical properties. The findings show that noun classifiers, occurring in nominal phrases, have a large number of grammatical functions not restricted to syntax but encompassing semantics and pragmatics, as well. They function syntactically by constituting numeric phrases, standing for head nouns, substituting for nouns, acting as the heads of modifier constructions, acting as noun modifiers and disambiguating constructions. This article offers a study of Lao people who migrated from Luang Phrabang to settle in Thailand, especially at Amphoe Lom Kao and Lom Sak, Phetchabun Province and Amphoe Dan Sai, Loei Province. These migrants have maintained their self-awareness as Luang Phrabang Lao by transmitting their own folk literature?€" for instance, local legends and hero tales, and rituals. Such ethnic transmission has been interpreted as an important mechanism for ethnic maintenance. From Whore To Heroine: Deconstructing The Myth Of The Fallen Woman And Redefining Female Sexuality In Contemporary Popular Fiction, Surapeepan Chatraporn

The fallen woman, long existent in patriarchal discourse and intensified by Victorian sexual ethics, succumbs to seduction or sensual desires, suffers social condemnation and ostracism, and eventually dies, either repentantly or shamelessly. The questions of female sexuality and feminine virtues are dealt with in The Great Gatsby, Daisy Miller and The Awakening. Daisy Buchanan, Jordan, and Myrtle, all three sexually transgressive women, are punished, with Myrtle, the most sexually aggressive, being subjected to an outrageous death penalty. Daisy Miller, upon engaging in acts of self-presentation and female appropriation of male space, undergoes social disapprobation and dies an untimely death. Edna, …

This paper examines the design and development process of a Hybrid network technology-enhanced language learning (HybridNTELL) model and evaluates its effectiveness. The model is grounded in a Vygotsky-inspired social constructivism approach to foreign language learning. The concepts of Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and Mediation underlie the model design framework, generating interactive content-based instruction in a community of practice. The aim of the HybridNTELL model is to foster the EFL learner autonomy required to live and work in a 21st century knowledge-based community. The homoerotic relationship is one of the major themes in Emily Dickinson's poetry. Critics have constantly looked for evidence of homoeroticism in the poet's life and work. In this essay, I argue that feminist psychoanalysis, particularly theories of the mother-daughter relationship, is useful to an understanding of the homoerotic in Dickinson's poems. In her rereading of psychoanalytical theories, Nancy Chodorow emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between the mother and daughter and the daughter?s marginal position within the symbolic order. Chodorow's theoretical framework has been applied to the analysis of female writers, including Dickinson, who write from the position of the daughter. …

This study aims to investigate students' self-regulated learning strategies and English reading comprehension in an ER program. There were 38 students participating in the study. The students were divided into upper and lower level groups according to their English reading comprehension pre-test mean scores. After 10 weeks of ER, findings show that there were significant differences between the students' English reading comprehension pre- and post-test mean scores, especially for the lower level group. Findings from the self-regulated learning interview schedule indicate that students reported frequently using metacognitive and performance regulation strategies. The Chinese three-tiered stage Pleasant Sound Pavilion (Chàngyīn Ge 暢音閣) in the Forbidden City is the only ?three-tiered stage? chόngtái sānceng 崇臺三層 (or the ?linked performance stage? lián xìtái 連戲臺) still in existence. It was an innovation of Chinese architecture that reflected the heyday of court theater during the reign of Qianlong (1736?96). On Nipa Island (a pseudonym), in a Thai Muslim community on the Andaman coast, childhood is a happy period as children are pampered and loved and spend long, happy hours in the company of their home- village friends. From these sustained social interactions develop long-lasting friendships that function importantly later on in adult life. Kloe-ship, another form of friendship is unique to Southern Thailand. Comparative human development, discourse analysis, kinesic analysis, and multiplexity of social networks form the theoretical approaches to the analysis of the ethnographic data.
