In Case You Missed It: China Road, Maura Elizabeth Cunningham Mar 2008

In Case You Missed It: China Road, Maura Elizabeth Cunningham

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

So many authors and pundits today attempt to predict China’s future by looking at the numbers: GDP, population, military spending, trade surplus, environmental measurements. Taking any combination of these figures, it is easy to declare that China is either a rising superpower, destined for world domination, or a teetering giant, bound only for disaster. The fact that both perspectives can—and have—been argued indicates the complexity of China’s situation and the inability of statistics to predict much of anything.

Rob Gifford, former Beijing correspondent for National Public Radio, took a three thousand mile-long journey along China’s Route 312, from Shanghai to …

Direction Of The Process Drama Piece: Making Sense Of Our Town, Janice L. Susko Mar 2008

Direction Of The Process Drama Piece: Making Sense Of Our Town, Janice L. Susko

Master of Theater Production Graduate Projects

This is a project report on a Process Drama piece conceived for Shortridge Middle School students in Indianapolis, Indiana. This project entailed the selection, background research and documentation of Thorton Wilder's Our Town, decisions about concept and themes to aid in its direction, and preplanning the layers to build structure so students at Shortridge Middle School could inquire, investigate, explore, and create their own interpretation of the play. The analysis includes a discussion as to the non-traditional directorial vision of this production.

Aristotle's Abstract Ontology, Allan Bäck Mar 2008

Aristotle's Abstract Ontology, Allan Bäck

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Aristotle has a metaphysics of individual substances, substrata persisting through time that are neither in nor said of a subject. That I do not dispute. However, when we move from the individual to the universal, from perception to knowledge, Aristotle has a metaphysics of relations. This I will try to sketch out here.

Aristotle appeals to abstraction at key places in his philosophy. Somehow abstraction gets us to the first principles and to the objects of the most fundamental sciences. Somehow universals are abstracted from singulars and have no transcendent existence.

Aristotle never states his theory of abstraction formally or …

Plato And Aristotle On The Instant Of Change - A Dilemma, John Bowin Mar 2008

Plato And Aristotle On The Instant Of Change - A Dilemma, John Bowin

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

There is an ancient puzzle about motion in Plato at Parmenides 155e-157b which has been the subject of scholarship by Richard Sorabji and more recently, Nico Strobach.1 The puzzle, as Plato gives it, can be roughly summarized as follows: At every time, a given object must either be in motion or at rest; there is no third possibility. Also, an object can never be simultaneously both in motion and at rest. The only way for an object to be both in motion and at rest is for it to be in motion and at rest at different times. But how …

Les Pas Perdus: Images Of Feet And Shoes In Surrealist Art, Emily Patricia Asplund Mar 2008

Les Pas Perdus: Images Of Feet And Shoes In Surrealist Art, Emily Patricia Asplund

Theses and Dissertations

Although feet and shoes appear throughout surrealist visual art, their significance within surrealist theory has not been studied as thoroughly as other familiar themes of surrealist art, such as the eye or the hat. The purpose of this project is to recover feet and shoes from their lowly position and to uncover their meaning and function in surrealist theory, particularly the theory of Georges Bataille. Feet were implicitly important to surrealists like André Breton and Louis Aragon, whose early and central literary texts were based on their favorite pastime: flânerie or wandering the streets of Paris. Images of feet can …

The Evaluation Of A Commercially-Available Abduction Prevention Program, Kimberly V. Beck Mar 2008

The Evaluation Of A Commercially-Available Abduction Prevention Program, Kimberly V. Beck

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Child abduction is a serious problem in the U.S.; therefore, it is essential that researchers evaluate the efficacy of currently available abduction prevention programs. This study evaluated the efficacy of a commercially-available abduction prevention program, The Safe Side. The participants included six 6-8-year old children with no prior abduction prevention training. A non-concurrent multiple baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the effects of the training. The participants' safety responses were assessed using in situ assessments within two different situations (responding to a knock on the door of the participant's home and interaction by a stranger in public) and …

Secondary Pre-Service Teachers’ Knowledge And Confidence In Dealing With Students’ First Amendment Rights In The Classroom, Ian Call Mar 2008

Secondary Pre-Service Teachers’ Knowledge And Confidence In Dealing With Students’ First Amendment Rights In The Classroom, Ian Call

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Every year teachers find themselves involved in conflicts dealing with violations of students' First Amendment rights to freedom of expression and freedom of religion. Students and parents file lawsuits against school districts because they feel teachers and administrators have violated their First Amendment rights. As a result, many teacher preparation programs require pre-service teachers to learn about educational law and the rights students have at school. Yet, little research exists about how well pre-service teachers are prepared to deal with First Amendment issues in the classroom.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how well pre-service teachers are prepared …

The Study Of Compensatory Motions While Using A Transradial Prosthesis, Stephanie Lutton Carey Mar 2008

The Study Of Compensatory Motions While Using A Transradial Prosthesis, Stephanie Lutton Carey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Improvement of prostheses requires knowledge of how the body adapts. A transradial prosthesis without a dynamic wrist component may cause awkward compensatory motion leading to fatigue, injury or rejection of the prosthesis. This work analyzed the movements of shoulder, elbow and torso during four tasks: drinking from a cup, opening a door, lifting a box and turning a steering wheel.

The main purpose of this study was to determine if using a basic transradial prosthesis that lacks motion of the forearm and wrist would cause significant compensatory motion of the shoulder, elbow and torso during the tasks. The second purpose …

Incorporating Complexities Into The Explanation Of Decision Making: Strategy Simulations And An Empirical Test, Nathaniel Decker Mar 2008

Incorporating Complexities Into The Explanation Of Decision Making: Strategy Simulations And An Empirical Test, Nathaniel Decker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This investigation of risky decision making models the standard forced-choice two outcome lottery task by incorporating elements of complexity present in real-world decision making. Potential decision criteria such as current wealth and quality of life information were made available to examine the influence of time-dependent contextual cues on decision strategy selection, since previous investigations of decision making have not included specific contextual cues that would allow for people to use complex or "dynamic" decision strategies.

Two studies explored simulated decision strategies requiring more or less complexity. Results suggest that strategies using dynamic, time-dependent criteria provide important advantages over simpler strategies. …

A Qualitative Analysis Of A Teacher Support Program For Educating Students With Emotional Disturbance In An Inclusive Setting, Crystal Williams Harmon Mar 2008

A Qualitative Analysis Of A Teacher Support Program For Educating Students With Emotional Disturbance In An Inclusive Setting, Crystal Williams Harmon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the experiences of teachers who included students identified as having emotional disturbance in their classes while participating in a teacher support program. A secondary analysis of data collected throughout the duration of the support program was conducted to identify core issues teachers faced as they included students with emotional disturbance in their classes. The first stage of analysis involved pre-existing data from the support program. Data were organized into four periods which chronologically represented the teachers' experiences. From this data eight core themes were identified: concerns about the lack of instructional adaptations made for students with emotional …

A Call For Liberation: Aleijadinho's 'Prophets' As Capoeiristas, Monica Jayne Bowen Mar 2008

A Call For Liberation: Aleijadinho's 'Prophets' As Capoeiristas, Monica Jayne Bowen

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the late eighteenth century, many Brazilians became inspired by the political revolutions of the French and American colonies and sought for a similar type of revolution, hoping to gain independence from the Portuguese. One nationalistic group, the "Inconfidência Mineira," probably influenced the art of the sculptor Aleijadinho (1738-1814). Aleijadinho's work has been examined as a political message previously, but never as propaganda through the representation of capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art. Capoeira probably formed as a means for Afro-Brazilian slaves to fight their way out of captivity. While training to fight, slaves would disguise capoeira to look like a …

The New Feminine Rhetoric: Wollstonecraft, Austen, And The Forms Of Romantic-Era Feminism, Elisabeth Louise Guyon Mar 2008

The New Feminine Rhetoric: Wollstonecraft, Austen, And The Forms Of Romantic-Era Feminism, Elisabeth Louise Guyon

Theses and Dissertations

Countering traditional claims that the feminist movement all but vanished during the early nineteenth century, this thesis suggests feminism remained prominent in both the literature and rhetoric of the time. In tracing the development of the "New Rhetoric," a rhetorical movement that aimed to accommodate new principles of the Enlightenment, I focus in part on the rhetorical battle between Edmund Burke, with his Reflections on the Revolution in France, and Thomas Paine, with his Rights of Man. From there, I suggest that Mary Wollstonecraft, writing in the wake of the Burke-Paine debate and drawing upon the rhetorical philosophy of George …

The Association Between The Measles, Mumps, And Rubella Vaccine And The Development Of Autism: A Meta-Analysis, Rashad Carlton Mar 2008

The Association Between The Measles, Mumps, And Rubella Vaccine And The Development Of Autism: A Meta-Analysis, Rashad Carlton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Autism is a childhood developmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communication and limited activities. The root cause of autism is unknown. However it has been postulated that administration of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine may be causally related to the development of autism. MMR vaccination is a requirement for entry into schools, so any increase in adverse events associated with the vaccine carries widespread public health importance.

The primary objective of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of the association between the MMR vaccination and the development of autism. The meta-analysis …

Analysis Of Capillary Forces In Electrowetting And Precision Self Assembly, Vivek Ramadoss Mar 2008

Analysis Of Capillary Forces In Electrowetting And Precision Self Assembly, Vivek Ramadoss

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Developments in micro and nano technology have great potential in many applications. Two applications that will be addressed in this work are self assembly of microdevices and Electrowetting in microfluidics. Capillary forces are the most critical factor in both of these techniques and need proper characterization. This thesis describes a detailed study of these forces and explains how they were utilized as an effective source of drive in high end applications.

Self assembly is a promising alternative to conventional pick and place robotic assembly of micro components. Its benefits include parallel integration of parts with low equipment costs. Various approaches …

Computer-Based Instruction And Remedial Mathematics: A Study Of Student Retention At A Florida Community College, Carol A. Zavarella Mar 2008

Computer-Based Instruction And Remedial Mathematics: A Study Of Student Retention At A Florida Community College, Carol A. Zavarella

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Computer-based instruction including distance learning is fast becoming an integral part of higher education. Much of the current research has found that computer-based instruction is as effective as lecture-based instruction. Despite the wealth of studies that purport that students enrolled in computer-based instruction perform equally well as compared to their lecture-based counterparts, there is a high dropout rate associated with computer-based instruction including distance learning.

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in students' withdrawal and completion rates in classes delivered via different instructional formats (distance learning, hybrid, or traditional) to determine if student learning style and/or …
