On Their Best Behavior: Good Magazine On Contemporary China Mar 2008

On Their Best Behavior: Good Magazine On Contemporary China

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

The cover story for the May/June issue of Good Magazine, just hitting newsstands, is “Don’t Be Scared of China.” Living up to their moniker as “media for people who give a damn,” Good’s China issue encourages readers to learn more about China and embrace, not hate, in features like the tongue-in-cheek play on tabloid Us Weekly’s “Stars…They’re Just Like Us” photo spread that declares “They’re Just Like Us…They Like Hip Hop” and “They’re Just Like Us…They Go To Vegas.”

Though this approach at cultural exchange is well-intentioned, it continues a particularly egocentric understanding of China as a recipient of American …

Reducing Attrition Rates In The Middle School Band Program: A Study Of Motivating Factors That Encourage Students To Be Successful In Playing An Instrument And Continuing In Middle School Band., Daphne Guill

Theses & Honors Papers

By discovering musical and non-musical factors that motivate middle school students to become successful in playing an instrument and continuing in band, directors will be able to reduce the attrition rates in their programs. Factors explored in this project included student motivation, improvement in skills, performance preference and social aspects. Pre-term and post-term surveys were created for students and their parents in grades sixth, seventh and eighth. Pre-term survey information contributed to the development and implementation of lesson plans, performance opportunities, and classroom activities. Post-term survey information was used to evaluate the extent to which student's needs and expectations for …

Integrating Handel's Oratorios Into The Middle School Repertoire: Arranging For Middle School Choirs, Maya Louise Neely Mar 2008

Integrating Handel's Oratorios Into The Middle School Repertoire: Arranging For Middle School Choirs, Maya Louise Neely

Theses & Honors Papers

As a choral teacher of middle school students, one of the most difficult tasks is finding music that suits their young voices. When a choral director wants appropriate music for young voices composed by George Frideric Handel, the challenges increase. In many situations, music arranged for two-part and three-part choirs can be used in place of the original composition. Although the vocal parts are adapted to fit the special requirements of the young vocalist, the general tone of the composition is similar.

To adapt these original compositions to the middle school choral repertoire, the previous arranger's techniques were observed and …

James Miles On Media Coverage Of Tibet Mar 2008

James Miles On Media Coverage Of Tibet

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

James Miles of The Economist was in Tibet when the riots and protests started on March 14. China’s strict limitations on foreign journalists entering Tibet in the following days made Miles one of the few journalists who saw the riots firsthand. With all the attention being now paid to how the international media are covering the events in Tibet, we thought it would be interesting to find out how Miles felt about the questions he got upon returning from the field. Here’s how he answered us via email.

China Beat: Is there any question that you’ve been asked a lot …

Tibet 5: In The Third Week Mar 2008

Tibet 5: In The Third Week

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

With the crisis in Tibet entering its third week, we continue to sweep the web in search of interesting and/or informative pieces to bring to the attention of our readers. This fifth installment in the series is heavily devoted to retrospective works, which go back in time, either to detail what took place in Tibet in the past or explore historical analogies useful for thinking through the contemporary situation. Still, since the story continues to unfold and take surprising turns, we also include links to pieces that track very recent developments, both on the ground and in the debate over …

Interview No. 1624, J. Halbert Gambrell Mar 2008

Interview No. 1624, J. Halbert Gambrell

Combined Interviews

In this interview, J. Halbert (“Hal”) Gambrell shares his memories of his colorful family, early El Paso, and his military experiences during both World War II and the Korean War. Born in El Paso in 1920, Gambrell entered this world in the family home due to his physician father’s decision to avoid local hospitals overflowing with Spanish Influenza patients. His father had recently returned from service in France during World War I; earlier he had served under General Jack “Black” Pershing during the latter’s 1916 punitive expedition into Mexico in Pershing’s ill-fated attempt to capture Pancho Villa. Gambrell continues to …

The fact that the Chinese were now our enemy seemed to hit everyone that the situation had definitely changed and there was …

Brevetoxin Body Burdens In Seabirds Of Southwest Florida, Karen E. Atwood Mar 2008

Brevetoxin Body Burdens In Seabirds Of Southwest Florida, Karen E. Atwood

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Harmful algal blooms (HABs, or "red tides") of the brevetoxin-producing dinoflagellate Karenia brevis occur periodically along Florida's Gulf coast. Mass mortalities of marine birds have long been associated with these blooms, yet there are few data documenting the accumulation of brevetoxins (PbTx) in the tissues of birds.

Post-mortem evaluations were performed on 185 birds representing 22 species collected from October 2001 through May 2006 during red tide and non-red tide events to quantify their body burdens of brevetoxins. A variety of tissues and organs were selected for brevetoxin analysis including blood, brain, heart, fat, stomach or gut contents, intestinal contents …
