"I Don't Think She's Like The Rest Of Us" : The Freedom In Disadvantage For Orphan Girls In Early 20th Century Literature, Giavanna Palermo
Honors Theses
Marianne Hirsch notes that often, in literature, the absence of the mother is the basis for the heroine’s development. On this foundation, there is nothing new in the observation that orphan girls in literature enjoy a kind of freedom that comes from being without parents and, specifically, without a mother. What this paper seeks to examine, however, through the textual analysis of Johanna Spyri’s Heidi, Eleanor H. Porter’s Pollyanna, Kate Douglas Wiggin’s Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables and Jean Webster’s Daddy Long Legs, is the way in which the figure …

"Helping People Find Freedom In Christ" A Journey Toward Fulfilling Christian Ministry In Community, Clifford E. Watt
Doctor of Ministry
The purpose of this dissertation is to explore a biblically based set of principles that will empower believers to have freedom in their Christian lives. There is an underlying belief contained in the Bible that it is natural for a believer to do ministry. Jesus said: "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last."3 He also reminded us: "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going …

Taking In: The Best Of Aib Photography 2008, Aib Students
Taking In
Taking In is the culmination of a semester's worth of work done by a group of thirteen students who set out to publish a collection of the best of AIB's student work. Guided by professor and artist Matthew Nash, and previous issues of Taking In, the class organized production, solicited work from peers, selected distinguished members of the art community to jury the work, and communicated with a team of designers to layout the book. The thirty-seven images are only a fraction of the work currently being produced by the students at the Art Institute of Boston, and there is …
In Defense Of Genius: Howells And The Limits Of Literary History, Claudia Stokes
In Defense Of Genius: Howells And The Limits Of Literary History, Claudia Stokes
English Faculty Research
In early 1886, William Dean Howells fell into an ugly public debate with the poet and critic Edmund Clarence Stedman. Carried out in the pages of Harper’s Monthly and the New Princeton Review, this dispute started as a disagreement about the origins of literary craftsmanship but quickly escalated into a heated epistemological squabble about the limits of historical knowledge. It began in March of that year, when Howells gave a mixed review to Stedman’s Poets of America (1885), a history of American poetry. Though Howells conceded the importance of Stedman’s contribution to the emerging discipline of American literary history, …

The Play Of Means And Ends: Justice In Lope's Fuenteovejuna, Matthew D. Stroud
The Play Of Means And Ends: Justice In Lope's Fuenteovejuna, Matthew D. Stroud
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
Lope’s masterpiece, Fuenteovejuna, is generally considered to be a glowing endorsement of the reign of Fernando and Isabel, who represent not just a glorious and hopeful Spanish history but political acumen, justice, and the triumph of good over evil. A closer examination of several key plot elements, however, reveals that almost every time characters are called upon to make decisions, they choose the option that at best circumvents the requirements for justice and at worst actively works to the detriment of the proper administration of justice and law. This study focuses on four pivotal moments—when Frondoso takes the Comendador’s …
Three Sunsets For Soprano And Chamber Orchestra, Adam Matthew Reifsteck
Three Sunsets For Soprano And Chamber Orchestra, Adam Matthew Reifsteck
Masters Theses
Published after his death in 1898, Lewis Carroll's poem Three Sunsets explores the deepest of human emotions-love and loss. These complex emotions are often difficult to describe in words, yet Carroll is able to draw the reader into this world and project the shared feelings of all humanity. Unlike romantic poetry of his time, this work by Carroll is written in third person as a retelling of the story between two star-crossed lovers. This perspective allows the reader to experience the emotions of both the woman and the man. While Carroll's poetry remains open to all explanations of meaning, the …
Demonizing Judaism In The Soviet Union During The 1920s, Robert Weinberg
Demonizing Judaism In The Soviet Union During The 1920s, Robert Weinberg
History Faculty Works
In this article, Robert Weinberg explores the visual representation of Judaism and observant Jews in the Soviet journal Bezbozhnik u stanka (The atheist at the workbench), which appeared in the 1920s. In their efforts to promote atheism and undermine organized religion, the artists responsible for the images in this journal singled out the Jewish god to be depicted with inhuman, bestial, and bizarre features such as a single eye and a nose made out of a fist. This portrayal of Judaism and religious Jews drew upon the pervasive antisemitic tropes and motifs in Russian culture and society and served to …

Articles The Acquisition Of English Adverbs By Thai Learners Rananda, Rananda Rungnaphawet
PASAA
This study explores the acquisition of English adverbs by Thai learners with respect to the range of positions of adjunction relative to the clause, applying the adjacency parameter as well as markedness theories. The subjects consisted of three groups, namely the native group, the advanced learner group, and the intermediate learner group. The results were as follows. In terms of the adjacency parameter, the native group placed adverbs quite equally between the clause-initial and the clause-medial positions. On the other hand, the learner groups put much more adverbs clause-initially. Despite these differences, the advanced group was on a par with …

The Effects Of Correction Feedback Techniques On Efl Learners's Pragmatic Production And Confidence, Pajaree Nipaspong, Sumalee Chinokul
PASAA
This paper reports on the effectiveness of explicit feedback and prompts in developing EFL learners' pragmatically appropriate refusal production and level of confidence. The study included 39 participants with two experimental groups and one control group. After the tenweek treatment, results from the oral refusal production tests and the rating scales revealed the effectiveness of prompts over explicit feedback in helping learners improve their refusal production and confidence. However, the control group receiving delayed feedback recorded the greatest confidence improvement, but the least refusal production gain. The key factors leading to the advantages of prompts may result from its provision …

The Simpsons: A Reflection Of Violence, Theodore S. Huptich
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

There have been numerous studies that have reviewed the effect that violent television programming has had on the people that have viewed; most of these studies have shown an increase in aggression in the people that viewed the violent programming. However, there have been very few, if any, studies that have examined the amount and type of violence that exists in television programs. This study uses the television program "The Simpsons", due to its popularity and longevity, to examine the amount and type of violence that exists. This …
