Recollecting Memory, Reviewing History: Trauma In Asian North American Literature, Guan-Rong Chen Apr 2008

Recollecting Memory, Reviewing History: Trauma In Asian North American Literature, Guan-Rong Chen

English Dissertations - Archive

My dissertation focuses on representations of traumas in select eight Asian North American novels. I attempt to draw attention to this underrepresented issue of the Asian minority's traumatic experiences. Trauma in my discussion includes double consciousness, national trauma of war, white racism toward the Asian minority, children's perspectives on melancholia and loss, as well as psychosomatic trauma and violence on the female body. In Chapter One, I argue that in Jade Snow Wong's Fifth Chinese Daughter and Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone double consciousness is represented as a racial(ized) trauma that creates an ideological dichotomy between East and West, and constrains …

Misreading Justice: The Rhetoric Of Revenge In Feminist Texts About Domestic Violence, Kimberly Paige Bowers Apr 2008

Misreading Justice: The Rhetoric Of Revenge In Feminist Texts About Domestic Violence, Kimberly Paige Bowers

English Dissertations - Archive

Feminist legal theories of battering homicides pose a challenge to feminist critics of American literature. Legal theorists argue that many women who are tried for killing their abusive partners should be acquitted on the grounds of self-defense. While they have had some success, stereotypes suggesting that women who kill are vengeful result in the wrongful convictions of too many female defendants. Feminist narratives that depict women who kill their abusers abound in American literature. Too often the scholarship on these narratives conflates revenge and self-defense, contributing to the problems feminist lawyers face. Looking at literature and legal scholarship from the …

Bernard Shaw's Arms And The Man, Richard Hinz Apr 2008

Bernard Shaw's Arms And The Man, Richard Hinz

Master of Theater Production Graduate Projects

Arms and the Man is one of Shaw's most beloved works. It's commentary on love, war and society is as applicable today as it was in the late nineteenth century. The comedy of the play is seen through the juxtaposition of character and the changes in attitude the main character and others goes through as the play progresses. Given the current conflict our country is involved in, audiences of today can readily relate to the ideas presented by Shaw on war and military action. Love is a theme that is universal and remains a timeless theme in all entertainment media …

From Bulls To Music: Social, Religious, And Economic Aspects Of A Pilgrimage To Nuestra Señora, La Vírgen De Altagracia, Angelina Tallaj Apr 2008

From Bulls To Music: Social, Religious, And Economic Aspects Of A Pilgrimage To Nuestra Señora, La Vírgen De Altagracia, Angelina Tallaj

Publications and Research

Every August 10th, about 800,000 pilgrims begin a five-day pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Virgin of Altagracia in Higüey, Dominican Republic. In this paper, I will show some interesting aspects of this pilgrimage’s economy that, while not unique to this pilgrimage, become much more tangible because of the presence of bulls as alms. I will continue, through the study of the music making and ritual, to show the role that music (and especially improvisation) plays in the social and devotional aspects of this pilgrimage. By examining the complex web of assumptions and expressions that contains the acts of music …

The Poet As Pretender: Poetic Legitimacy In Cvetaeva, Sibelan E.S. Forrester Apr 2008

The Poet As Pretender: Poetic Legitimacy In Cvetaeva, Sibelan E.S. Forrester

Don Francisco Yturria: Beginnings Of A South Texas Entrepreneur, Lilia M. Garcia

History Faculty Publications

The life and legacy of South Texas pioneer Francisco Yturria remains a fascinating study of a remarkable individual who made powerful and lasting contributions to the region's history. Lilia M. Garcia, a descendent of Don Francisco, consulted family papers and a variety of other primary sources to chronicle his story while pursuing a graduate degree at Southern Methodist University. The following article is the first installment of what will be a four part history of Don Francisco Yturria--South Texas Entrepreneur.

Spectres, Monstres Et Fantômes. Les Chants Maldoror" Et Le Spectacle De La Fantasmagorie, Eloise Sureau-Hale

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Seeing Inside The Mountains: Cynthia Rylant's Appalachian Literature And The "Hillbilly" Stereotype, Karen Roggenkamp Apr 2008

Seeing Inside The Mountains: Cynthia Rylant's Appalachian Literature And The "Hillbilly" Stereotype, Karen Roggenkamp

Faculty Publications

If Ob, as a West Virginia native, possesses the ability to see The Mysteries where others see only primitivistic whittling or, more pejoratively, tacky wooden trash cluttering the yards of mountain families, then Rylant's Appalachian works likewise depict characters who possess an ability to see beyond external markers and predictable interpretations, and who seek an emotional and spiritual interiority based on family, love, and sense of place. Rylant's words in The Relatives Came, When I Was Young in the Mountains, and Missing May work to restore the integrity of Appalachia as a place of "interior" values, a setting that symbolizes …

Evolution/Revolution: The Arts And Crafts In Contemporary Fashion And Textiles, Joanne Dolan Ingersoll, Amy Pickworth, Editor Apr 2008

Evolution/Revolution: The Arts And Crafts In Contemporary Fashion And Textiles, Joanne Dolan Ingersoll, Amy Pickworth, Editor

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 28, Spring 2008. Evolution/Revolution brings together the textile work of designers from the U.S., Britain, Europe, South and Central America, and Japan, and draws philosophical parallels between these contemporary artists and those of the Arts and Crafts Movement of 19th-century Britain. The exhibition is organized around the themes of Storytelling, Experimentation and Materials, Collaboration, and Art and Life—key ideas that spring from the Arts and Crafts spirit.

One of the most widely influential art and design movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Arts and Crafts Movement was an aesthetic and political response to a world stripped …

Falling Into The Rabbit Hole: Monstrosity, Modesty, And Mary Toft, Piper Crisp Davis Apr 2008

Falling Into The Rabbit Hole: Monstrosity, Modesty, And Mary Toft, Piper Crisp Davis

English Theses - Archive

The obstetrical hoax perpetrated by Mary Toft in eighteenth-century England is worth the further attention of English scholars, not only because numerous literary texts are inspired by or linked to the incident, but also because existing studies frequently simplify this contemporary cultural fascination by associating it with theories of monstrosity. In this paper, I demonstrate that attempts to examine the rabbit births through the lens of monstrosity are complicated by the imprecise nature of language and the multiple meanings of the term monstrous, while attempts at objective observation are frustrated and deconstructed by satirists, by other scientists, and even by …

Native Spaces Of Continuation, Preservation, And Belonging: Louise Erdrich's Concepts Of Home, Jonathan Max Wilson Apr 2008

Native Spaces Of Continuation, Preservation, And Belonging: Louise Erdrich's Concepts Of Home, Jonathan Max Wilson

English Dissertations - Archive

In light of continual Native migration, relocation, and hybridization, it is my intention to examine the evolution and diversification of home in a spectrum of Louise Erdrich's writing. My examination of the texts focuses on the notion that "home" for all Native Americans (mixed and full bloods) has and is evolving and that this re-definition has made the location of language, culture, family, and community a "Home" that cannot be defined by traditional Native or Western boundaries or definitions. Instead, home depends on the inter-relation of such attributes, but it is not specific to any inclusion or omission. Home is …
