A Domestic Pas De Deux: The Rise Of The Muslim Brotherhood And Islamist-Regime Relations In Jordan, Simon Shogry Apr 2008

A Domestic Pas De Deux: The Rise Of The Muslim Brotherhood And Islamist-Regime Relations In Jordan, Simon Shogry

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

During the first three decades of the Jordanian kingdom’s existence, the Muslim Brotherhood was a relatively apolitical charity organization that held a handful of seats in Parliament. From the mid-1970s onward, however, the Brotherhood grew substantially in size and influence, so much so that it is now the largest and most broad-based political party in Jordan. Looking at domestic, regional, economic, social, political and theological factors, this study seeks to explain the Brotherhood’s dramatic political ascendance and, also, how the regime has coped with its rise. A holistic explanation of this phenomenon is the study’s modus operandi. In order to …

“Multi-Track Diplomacy” Through Enhancing Interreligious Understanding: A Case Study In Abrahamic Trialogue Between Jordanian And American Students, Nick Doctor Apr 2008

“Multi-Track Diplomacy” Through Enhancing Interreligious Understanding: A Case Study In Abrahamic Trialogue Between Jordanian And American Students, Nick Doctor

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Interfaith dialogue has become widely acknowledged as a means to enhance interreligious and intercultural sensitivity, complement state-based diplomatic efforts, and attain sustainable conflict resolution. This study is aimed at examining the potential of Multi-Track Diplomacy, demonstrated through interreligious discourse, to develop interreligious and intercultural sensitivity within the young adult, nonprofessional demographic. The data and analysis is based upon research acquired through interviews with interreligious organizations, religious and academic scholars, and Jordanian citizens in spring 2008; and three interfaith trialogue sessions held April-May, 2008 with participants from the three Abrahamic faith traditions. The analysis indicates that mild tension exists between Christian …

Art, Ritual, And Representation: An Exploration Of The Roles Of Tsam Dance In Contemporary Mongolian Culture, Mikaela Mroczynski Apr 2008

Art, Ritual, And Representation: An Exploration Of The Roles Of Tsam Dance In Contemporary Mongolian Culture, Mikaela Mroczynski

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Tsam, the sacred and complex Buddhist ritual dance, although only introduced to Mongolia in the 19th century, established itself as a significant ceremony before being halted by the purges and destruction the communist era. The 18 years of religious freedom that democracy has heralded have resulted in tsam’s successful reestablishment as a religious ritual in a growing number of monasteries across the country. Tsam has also taken its place as an icon of Mongolian culture for foreigners, a cornerstone of many performance groups’ representation of Mongolian cultural heritage. As based on interviews with performers, administrators, designers, and audiences of performance …

Emotional Expression: Poems And Pacific Voices, Anna Lane Harmless Apr 2008

Emotional Expression: Poems And Pacific Voices, Anna Lane Harmless

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This essay is a collection of opinions and stories that deal with four major emotions, anger, happiness, sadness, and love. A collection of poetry that expresses those feelings as well as a set of original poetry written by the researcher are set into the text. The original poetry is an alternative medium that the researcher hopes will represent some of the views of the young adults of the Pacific concerning emotions and expression of emotion. The poems were inspired by surveys and interview responses, with hopes to create an image and feeling that may connect with Pacific voices. The group …

The Exchange At Halesi: A Sacred Place And A Societal Context, Ethan Gohen Apr 2008

The Exchange At Halesi: A Sacred Place And A Societal Context, Ethan Gohen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Halesi is a small, but growing village located in the Khotang District of Eastern Nepal. In many ways it is rather normal. As is typical in this area of Nepal, its inhabitants are mainly Rai Hindus, although there is a substantial community of other Hindu castes as well. Less typically, there is a small, but very important Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Halesi. The reason for this monastery is even less typical still. In the rocky terrain around Halesi there are many caves. But in the central rocky, tree covered hillock of Halesi bazaar there is one cave of particular importance. …

On Est Ensemble: A Participatory Study Of The Jembe Tradition As Preserved By The Griots Of West Africa, Joel Rowe Apr 2008

On Est Ensemble: A Participatory Study Of The Jembe Tradition As Preserved By The Griots Of West Africa, Joel Rowe

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In this study, I examine how a culture’s values are reflected in a specific pedagogical process through participant observation; in essence, I endeavor to examine first-hand the anthropology of pedagogy. The jembe, in truth, is comparable to a window into both the teaching model of a Senegalese master drummer and the cultural values reflected in his pedagogical method. In learning to play the parts of seven jembe rhythms with fluidity and recording their cultural significances, I discover the elements of criticism and sacrifice deeply inlaid in the tradition of this instrument. Relative to the communal setting of the griot family …

Hlavní Nádraží: Past, Present, And Future, Laura Dillon Apr 2008

Hlavní Nádraží: Past, Present, And Future, Laura Dillon

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

I first conceived of this project in pursuit of an abstract quality that seemed inherently difficult to grasp. Everywhere I encountered references to an admirable “character” and “spirit” at the old train station—a spirit that is soon to evaporate with the pending renovation and restoration. In observing the station and talking with architects I saw many paths I could take in my research. No matter which direction I headed, though, I wanted somehow to reveal this elusive character. The most straightforward way I saw to attempt this was through a photographic documentation of the current state of Hlavní Nádraží. It …

Spiritual Conversations, Randall D. Groves Apr 2008

Spiritual Conversations, Randall D. Groves

Doctor of Ministry

How can the Keesler Air Force Base Chapel provide spiritual care for airmen who are spiritual but who are not religious? The Department of Defense challenges the chapel to promote the spiritual health of all airmen while the chapel mostly provides religion-based services. The chapel's efforts, therefore, ignore airmen who do not fit into a particular religion. The problem will be addressed by suggesting that the chapel incorporate a spiritual conversations gathering into the existing religion-based services. The chapel needs to embrace spiritual-but-not-religious airmen by offering a spiritual conversations gathering and conducting an annual spirituality survey. The purpose of this …

Offering Hope: Ministry With The Chronically Ill, Marti Gates Lundy Apr 2008

Offering Hope: Ministry With The Chronically Ill, Marti Gates Lundy

Doctor of Ministry

One of every two individuals in the United States suffers from chronic illness. While these numbers are staggering, studies indicate that they will continue to rise. The problem exists that the local church is not fully equipped to address the desire and need for wholeness and community felt by the millions of individuals living with chronic conditions. These individuals suffer alone and the contemporary church has failed to minister effectively with them. With proper grounding in a biblical understanding of God's role in illness and suffering, a foundation in the role of pastoral care throughout Church history, and by looking …

Styrofoam: From Industrial Invention To Artistic Transformation, Judith Tannenbaum, Amy Pickworth, Editor Apr 2008

Styrofoam: From Industrial Invention To Artistic Transformation, Judith Tannenbaum, Amy Pickworth, Editor

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 29, Spring 2008. Ubiquitous in our culture, styrofoam is used to insulate buildings, package computers and other consumer products, and produce picnic coolers and containers for fast food and take-out. For decades, artists have employed styrofoam in the making of models and molds for casting. Today, however, more and more artists are exploring it as a primary material or a subject in its own right, using it in new and ingenious ways to create sculpture, paintings, and installations.

Commemorating The Great Kantō Earthquake: Futei Senjin And The Politics Of Mourning In The Japanese Empire [관동대지진을 추도함: 일본 제국에 있어서의 '불령 선인'과 추도의 정치학], Jinhee Lee Apr 2008

Commemorating The Great Kantō Earthquake: Futei Senjin And The Politics Of Mourning In The Japanese Empire [관동대지진을 추도함: 일본 제국에 있어서의 '불령 선인'과 추도의 정치학], Jinhee Lee

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

On September 1, 1923, two minutes before noon, the earth began to shake, signaling the biggest natural disaster in modern Japan. A fierce wind and raging fire followed what came to be known as the Great Kantō Earthquake, devastating the densely populated Tokyo metropolitan area. The experience of calamity soon became subject to human interpretation and political manipulation, leading to organized violence against Koreans in the metropole. Triggered by rumors that Koreans were committing arson, poisoning the water, and plotting an uprising, local vigilantes and government authorities massacred approximately six thousand Koreans. In the year following the catastrophe, various commemorative …

“How Could Anyone Respect Us?” A Century Of Olympic Consciousness And National Anxiety In China, Andrew D. Morris Apr 2008

“How Could Anyone Respect Us?” A Century Of Olympic Consciousness And National Anxiety In China, Andrew D. Morris

History

Much of the history of China’s modern sports and physical culture program (tiyu) has been phrased, experienced, understood, and remembered as a gesture of national defense. Enemies have come, gone, and come again—the Western and Japanese imperialists, the Communists, the Nationalists, the footbound and weak, the ignorant and unhygienic, the decadent and materialistic, Taiwan, Falun Gong, and (again) U.S. and Japanese imperialists. All have served as forces that threatened China’s national body and had to be defeated with the rhythms, motions, disciplines, and ideologies of modern sport. Thus, over the last century, sport in China has served as a marker …

Masque Scenery And The Tradition Of Immobilization In The First Part Of The Countess Of Montgomery's Urania, Julie Campbell Apr 2008

Masque Scenery And The Tradition Of Immobilization In The First Part Of The Countess Of Montgomery's Urania, Julie Campbell

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

This study addresses two of the pivotal magical interventions in The First Part of The Countess of Montgomery's Urania, specifically those in which Wroth makes use of the masque tradition of immobilization: the Three Towers of the House of Love and the Marble Theatre on an island in the Gulf of Venice. In these enchantments, which include architecturally fantastic structures, music, and the symbolically posed, stilled characters, Wroth creates masque-like ‘idealized fictions’ that emblematize the romantic relationships she depicts. They are meant to elevate the sometimes sordid realities of real relationships to a higher allegorical plane on which the virtue …

Sometimes It’S A Child And A Choice: Toward An Embodied Abortion Praxis, Jeannie Ludlow Apr 2008

Sometimes It’S A Child And A Choice: Toward An Embodied Abortion Praxis, Jeannie Ludlow

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Feminist analyses of recent abortion politics in the United States note that the “abortion debate” has settled into a system of dichotomies, such as the dichotomy between women’s autonomy on the abortion rights side and the value of unborn life on the anti-abortion side. This article posits that these dichotomizations contribute to the erosion of women’s access and rights to abortion through loss of credibility for abortion rights discourse and loss of access to abortion praxis that can handle more complex situations. Maintenance of the dichotomies requires denial or erasure of more complicated situations, like late-second-trimester abortion and situations in …
