It's an honor and a pleasure to introduce Douglas Crimp, whom I've known for more than thirty years. In that time, Douglas has been my fellow student, my inspiring colleague, my attentive editor, my concert, opera, film, and dance-going companion, and, most important, my dear friend.

The Three Sam Spades: The Shifting Model Of American Masculinity In The Three Films Of The Maltese Falcon, Philippa Gates Apr 2008

The Three Sam Spades: The Shifting Model Of American Masculinity In The Three Films Of The Maltese Falcon, Philippa Gates

English and Film Studies Faculty Publications

Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel The Maltese Falcon—starring the quintessential hard-boiled private detective, Sam Spade—was adapted for the screen not once, but three times: The Maltese Falcon (also known as Dangerous Female) directed by Roy Del Ruth (US, 1931); Satan Met a Lady directed by William Dieterle (US, 1936); and The Maltese Falcon directed by John Huston (US, 1941).1 It is the last of these films, according to critics, that follows the novel most closely and is the version Hammett liked best, although he had no direct involvement with the production of any of the three films. And it is …

Sit Like A Bell: Sound And The Body In Tibetan Buddhism, Christopher Elford Apr 2008

Sit Like A Bell: Sound And The Body In Tibetan Buddhism, Christopher Elford

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Lobsag Khedup, a 32 year-old Tibetan Monk living in a single room at an art center in Zhongdian where he teaches the art of thangka painting, wakes in silence at 6 a.m. He pulls his bedding around him as if to make a nest out of it. It is cold and his action is somehow appropriate to the introversion of the hour. There is no light in the room, no room yet to speak of, just the dull indistinct sense of an interior. He sits up and starts to pray. But to pray isn’t enough, he must make his devotional …

Flarr Pages #60: Lady Assassins In Spain? A Psychological And Cultural Profile Of Perez-Reverte's Dona Adela De Otero, Thomas C. Turner Apr 2008

Flarr Pages #60: Lady Assassins In Spain? A Psychological And Cultural Profile Of Perez-Reverte's Dona Adela De Otero, Thomas C. Turner

FLARR Pages

In 1988, twenty years ago, Arturo Perez-Reverte wrote a marvelously complex novel entitled El maestro de esgrima (The Fencing Master). The project of that novel was to show how certain traditional Spanish values and attitudes were threatened by contemporary realities. The protagonist, the talented and socially withdrawn Don Jaime de Astarloa, is a gentleman of the ideal "caballero-hidalgo" type, a fencing master, who is nearly killed defending his values, single-handedly, against a major transnational conspiracy being played out during the political turmoil of the late 19th century. Perez-Reverte shows that by then it had become extremely difficult to be an …

Church And Society: The Laurence J. Mcginley Lectures, 1988-2007, Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., Robert P. Imbelli

Religion

One of the leading theologians of our time, Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., has written and lectured on a wide range of topics across his distinguished career, and for a wide range of audiences. Integrating faith and scholarship, he has created a rich body of work that, in the words of one observer, is “both faithful to Catholic tradition and fresh in its engagement with the contemporary world.”

Here, brought together for the first time in one volume, are the talks Cardinal Dulles has given twice each year since the Laurence J. McGinley Lectures were initiated in 1988, conceived broadly as …

Using Stanley Cavell, Michael Fischer Apr 2008

Using Stanley Cavell, Michael Fischer

English Faculty Research

Stanley Cavell often speaks of inheriting and carrying on the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and other writers. These writers help him move on in his own thinking, turning him around when he feels lost, provoking him when he gets discouraged or stuck. His indebtedness to J. L. Austin in the acknowledgements to Must We Mean What We Say? (1969) captures one way he benefits from all the writers who have influenced him: “To the late J. L. Austin I owe, beyond what I hope is plain in my work, whatever is owed the teacher …

Testimonial, Henry Abelove Apr 2008

Testimonial, Henry Abelove

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Douglas Crimp was born in 1944 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where his brother and sister still live. As a boy, Douglas imagined that he might become an architect, and he went to Tulane University specifically to study architecture. But soon after beginning his university life, he shifted his concentration to Art History. One Tulane Teacher of Art History in particular enthralled him. This was Bernard Lehman, an eloquent, learned, and effervescent lecturer, and a campy gay man, whom Douglas credits as a primary influence.
