Qualitative Analysis Of Teacher Perceptions And Use Of The Dynamic Indicators Of Basic Early Literacy Skills (Dibels) Within A District-Wide Reading First Program, Brian T. Gaunt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The aim of the Reading First grant program was to (a) increase quality and consistency of instruction in K-3 classrooms; (b) conduct timely and valid assessments of student reading growth in order to identify students experiencing reading difficulties; and (c) provide high quality, intensive interventions to help struggling readers catch up with their peers (Torgesen, 2002). In the State of Florida, school districts must incorporate the use of an assessment tool called the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) to qualify for Reading First grant funding. Though DIBELS has been found to be a valid and reliable assessment …

Gustav Jenner’S Clarinet Sonata In G Major, Opus 5: An Analysis And Performance Guide With Stylistic Comparison To The Clarinet Sonatas, Opus 120 Of His Teacher, Johannes Brahms, Elizabeth R. Aleksander Apr 2008

Gustav Jenner’S Clarinet Sonata In G Major, Opus 5: An Analysis And Performance Guide With Stylistic Comparison To The Clarinet Sonatas, Opus 120 Of His Teacher, Johannes Brahms, Elizabeth R. Aleksander

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Gustav Jenner was Johannes Brahms’ only composition student, but his works have not received the same attention that Brahms’ have. Jenner’s output includes chamber music, piano compositions, choral works, and over 200 Lieder. He wrote two pieces for clarinet, the Sonata in G Major, op. 5 for clarinet and piano and the Trio in E-flat Major for clarinet, horn, and piano. Relatively little has been written about Jenner, especially in English, and this document begins by detailing Jenner’s life and musical training, emphasizing his studies with Brahms, who was widely known as a demanding teacher. The first chapter continues with …

"How Skinny I Got, And How Fucking Weird I Was": Michael Shannon, Sarah Kane, Woyzeck And Experiential Theatre, Marti Lyons '08 Apr 2008

"How Skinny I Got, And How Fucking Weird I Was": Michael Shannon, Sarah Kane, Woyzeck And Experiential Theatre, Marti Lyons '08

Honors Projects

The majority of academic focus on Sarah Kane has been on Kane the playwright; the purpose of this paper is to offer insight into Kane's artistry by examining Kane the director. In this paper I expand Aleks Sierz's concept of experiential theatre by using Sarah Kane's 1997 production of Woyzeck as a prototype. Essentially, experiential theatre is about blurring boundaries such as those between observer and participant, or between actor and character, or between the personal and the professional. In the rehearsal process and production of Woyzeck Kane blurred many boundaries; I will examine three in this paper: the actor/audience …

Julia Hills Johnson, 1783-1853 My Soul Rejoiced, Linda J. Thayne Apr 2008

Julia Hills Johnson, 1783-1853 My Soul Rejoiced, Linda J. Thayne

Theses and Dissertations

Julia Hills Johnson, the 48-year-old wife of Ezekiel Johnson and mother of sixteen children, found spiritual fulfillment in the doctrines of a new religion called Mormonism. Her baptism in 1831 was a simple act that ultimately led her halfway across the American continent, and strained her marital relationship, yet filled her with a sense of spiritual contentment. Julia's commitment to her faith, her tenacity, self-determination and willingness to take risks to participate in this new religious movement sets her apart from other nineteenth-century farm women in New England and New York. Julia's religiosity was self-determined and tenacious. She chose to …

The Scientific Management Of Writing And The Residue Of Reform, Eric Turley Apr 2008

The Scientific Management Of Writing And The Residue Of Reform, Eric Turley

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Working at the intersection of composition, writing assessment, and school reform, this dissertation draws on an archival study of Progressive Era educational journals and a year-long qualitative study in a small urban district to examine the ways standardize writing tests are implemented as tools in public school reform. In the first half of the dissertation, I argue that administratively-minded Progressive Era school reformers, in a response to a “writing problem” framed around teacher inefficiency, designed tools for teachers to measure writing “objectively” in their classrooms; however, these tools were quickly used against teachers by administrators interested in efficiently managing schools …

American Memorials: A Conceptual Model, Mona Doreen Greenberg Apr 2008

American Memorials: A Conceptual Model, Mona Doreen Greenberg

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Reverence for the dead is a defining human characteristic. Pyramids are no longer in style, but a variety of memorials mark the American landscape, commemorating lives lost in war, exploration, storms, and most recently, lives taken by acts of terrorism. The study of American memorials differs as widely as do the reasons for building memorials. The development of a conceptual model lends insight to the nature of memorials and informs future scholars who may want to investigate this very human phenomenon.

A literature review identified 10 constructs that appeared to be universal to memorials: visitors, memory and meaning, grieving, education, …

Roberts, Beverly, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Beverly Roberts (b. 06/09/51) is the president of the Parkchester branch of the NAACP. Roberts was born and raised in New York. She lived in San Juan Hill in Manhattan until she was five, and then she, her three siblings, and her New York- born mother moved to the West Farms neighborhood of the Bronx. At the time, Roberts’ family was part of West Farms’ minority black population. Beverly, her mother, and her siblings faced prejudice and intimidation from white (predominately Jewish) children and adults. Consequently, the Roberts’ set about earning their community’s respect. Beverly’s mother was very strict toward …
