Je Suis Huger: Shaping Identity In South Carolina, 1685-1885, Jason Hollis May 2008

Je Suis Huger: Shaping Identity In South Carolina, 1685-1885, Jason Hollis

All Theses

In 1685, a large group of Huguenots, or French Calvinist Protestants, migrated to South Carolina seeking economic opportunity and religious toleration. By the outbreak of the Civil War, the descendants of these French immigrants had transformed into bastions of Southern identity and society. But how had this transformation taken place?

This study attempts to answer that question. It aims to trace the journey of Huguenot assimilation from French Protestant refugees to British Colonists, from Colonists into Americans, and finally from Americans into Southerners. Focusing on the experiences of a single lineage, the Huger family, it hopes to add to existing …

On Sea-Goats, Chase Hart May 2008

On Sea-Goats, Chase Hart

All Theses

This thesis can be viewed as mediation between two processes of interpretation. Once process affirms freeplay and the continuation of the game. The other still wants a center or 'the reassuring foundation, the origin and the end of the game' as Derrida calls it. On a deep level, these poems try to realize themselves as inevitably subject to play, while also acknowledging themselves as trying to meaningfully interpret experience.

The Effects Of Human/Object Interaction On Museum Visit Experience Satisfaction, John Fino May 2008

The Effects Of Human/Object Interaction On Museum Visit Experience Satisfaction, John Fino

All Theses

Interactive exhibits in museums have become commonplace (Spock, 2004). They have been found to be effective teaching tools (Falk & Dierking, 1992), they can increase the attracting power of the exhibit (Davidson, Heald & Hein, 1991) and can help create mindfulness in visitors (Moscardo, 1996). However, interactives are considered primarily the domain of science and technology museums (Pekarik, 2004) and there is little published research regarding interactives in living history museums. To better understand the effects of interactives in a living history setting, a quasi-experiment was created to compare the outcomes of two treatments of the same interpretive presentation: an …

Radicalism And Rebellion: Presidential Reconstruction In South Carolina April 1865 To May 1866, Walter Bright May 2008

Radicalism And Rebellion: Presidential Reconstruction In South Carolina April 1865 To May 1866, Walter Bright

All Theses

The focus of this thesis deals primarily with the white elite of South Carolina during Presidential Reconstruction. Historians have noted South Carolina radicalism before the Civil War, but I propose that this radicalism did not simply fade away when the war ended. I argue that the Civil War did not destroy white South Carolinians' will to fight; a sense of nationalism still flourished as they continued to rebel against the federal government, despite the devastating effects of the war on the Palmetto State. This work will show that these white elites continued this fight because they were enraged over the …

Rewriting Boundaries: Identity, Freedom, And The Reinvention Of The Neo-Slave Narrative In Edward P. Jones's The Known World, Theresa Rooney May 2008

Rewriting Boundaries: Identity, Freedom, And The Reinvention Of The Neo-Slave Narrative In Edward P. Jones's The Known World, Theresa Rooney

All Theses

In the 2003 Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Known World, Edward P. Jones employs many of the same devices and themes found in traditional slave narratives and neo-slave narratives. Jones presents a complex and ironic model of slavery in his novel, and he uses this unconventional representation of slavery to explore identity and freedom as social constructs, creating a dialogue with slave and neo-slave narrative texts. By placing the novel in a dialogue with slave narratives like, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Jones succeeds in grounding …

La Cotidiana, Nancy Ehlers May 2008

La Cotidiana, Nancy Ehlers

All Theses

My current work and supporting thesis explore the mysterious, the sacred and the day to day minutiae, 'la cotidiana.' The overriding themes that fuel my work are found in the tenants of a form of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as from ideas stemming from psychoanalysis, as put forth by the French psychoanalyst. Julia Kristeva; in particular, her approach to the abject, or that which we tend to reject on a personal level and/or as a society. In my thesis I will address these themes and how they are evidenced in my work with the simple photogram. I will provide examples …

Sources On Lesbian Subjectivities For The Production Of Lesbian Of Color Identity Formation Through Literature, Art, Film, Or Documentation: An Annotatated Bibliography, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz May 2008

Sources On Lesbian Subjectivities For The Production Of Lesbian Of Color Identity Formation Through Literature, Art, Film, Or Documentation: An Annotatated Bibliography, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz

Publications and Research

Historically, coming out as a lesbian and then forming an identity of a "lesbian of color" includes seeking out like voices and stories. Librarians who hold an understanding of the lesbian of color coming out process as well as the fluidity of language in Queer Studies will be better equipped to service lesbian of color patrons. This paper holds three tools for reference librarians: A literature review outlining the history of lesbian of color identity formation, secondly, a bibliography with interdisciplinary humanities reference annotations that source lesbians of color in literature, film, performance art, and identity, and thirdly, a model …

Effects Of Protégé-Mentor Gender Mix On Organisational Commitment, David E. Okurame May 2008

Effects Of Protégé-Mentor Gender Mix On Organisational Commitment, David E. Okurame

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study examined the interaction effects of protégé and mentor gender on organisational commitment in the Nigerian work setting. Data was collected from one hundred and sixty-one dyads in four gender combinations through a survey of a large government owned health institution. Results revealed that mean scores of all-male, all female, and the female protégé-male mentor dyads were comparable while that of male protégé-female mentor was significantly low. Whereas organisational commitment was better for male protégés when their mentors were males, it was better for females when mentors were females. The study narrows the gap created by the dearth of …

Dilemmas Of Islamic And Secular Feminists And Feminisms, Huma Ahmed-Ghosh May 2008

Dilemmas Of Islamic And Secular Feminists And Feminisms, Huma Ahmed-Ghosh

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper explores ways in which a multifaceted understanding of Islamic feminism can contribute to productive dialogue about the future of Muslim women in both Islamic and secular states. Towards that end I will discuss the numerous interpretations of Islamic, secular, collaborative and hybrid feminisms that have surfaced in Islamic and non-Islamic nations. There is a pragmatic value to developing a standard for Islamic feminism that can be “modern” and held up to more oppressive local conditions/politics and their extremes of patriarchy. To do this, one needs a comprehensive review of what local oppressions exist in specific countries and what …

Appropriate Technology For Cassava Processing In Nigeria: User’S Point Of View, Stella O. Odebode

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study examined appropriate agricultural extension technological needs of users in cassava processing activities in Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique was used in selecting 160 participating and non-participating users making a total of 320 users in Oyo state. Data was collected with Interview Schedule and analysed using chi-square and t-test. (58%) of women (users) use traditional processing equipments in cassava processing. Improved processing technologies used include vibrating sieve, abrasive peeler, motorised grater, drum drier, and screw-jack. Processed cassava products include “gari,” “lafun,” starch, and “fufu.” Significant relationships exist between the use of improved technologies for processing and age (X2 = 6.15, …

Law, Women And Health In Nigeria, Philomena I. Ozo-Eson May 2008

Law, Women And Health In Nigeria, Philomena I. Ozo-Eson

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper attempts to analyse sexual inequality as it affects the health of women in Nigeria. Various theories that inform the study of women are briefly discussed along with specific areas of women’s health concerns. These include: female genital mutilation, violence against women, sexual harassment, and widowhood practices. Other areas of discourse involve women and law, and here, we emphasised the need to re-examine both the customary and statutory laws to reflect justice, dignity and fair play for all members of the society irrespective of their gender. Also, special attention should be paid to some laws that encourage the brutality …
