On Voice And Spirit, Michael Costik May 2008

On Voice And Spirit, Michael Costik

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"This quote always struck me very powerfully. “The spirit nourishes within.” Is there a separation of voice from our spiritual being? Over the past several months I have given a lot of thought to the nature of music, singing, and voice. As a student of music, I frequently thought that my training did not solely pertain to singing, but I rarely reflected on this at. Now, I realize that I was being formed in virtues that are not separate from the desire for integrity. I believe that music itself …

La Capacidad De La Fe, Natalie Pellegrino May 2008

La Capacidad De La Fe, Natalie Pellegrino

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"In the Fall semester of 2007 I studied abroad in Santiago, Chile. It was a big step to move to South America considering that my house is only fifteen minutes away from campus. I would like to say it was the easiest thing I have ever done, but at the beginning it was a terrifying experience. I remember getting on the plane and hyperventilating because I thought I wasn’t prepared. My mind was racing with questions like “How can I manage the language? Will I make friends? Are Chileans …

Faith, Once Again, Stephanie Klenk May 2008

Faith, Once Again, Stephanie Klenk

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). I've questioned a dozen times how I can be absolutely sure of things that I only hope for and how I can be completely convinced of things I have never seen. There isn’t an easy answer other than I AM absolutely sure of the hope of good coming from bad situations and I AM absolutely convinced that there is a mighty and loving God seated in the Heavenly Realm working in and around …

My Mom The Theologian, Peter Santandreu May 2008

My Mom The Theologian, Peter Santandreu

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Let me start off by saying that I love my family, all of them, and not one person more than the others. However, I really love my mom. In recent times, as she grows deeper in her faith and I in mine, we have had so much to talk about. It seems that, whenever I go home from college, the conversation quickly turns into some sort of exam on everything I have been learning through my Religious Studies classes. Well, not so much an exam as a test on …

Early Connections, David Mammano May 2008

Early Connections, David Mammano

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"I have had a painting of Jesus in my room since I was a child. In the painting, Jesus is at the outside of a door. But the door does not have a handle to let Him in. I remember asking my mom why there was no handle and she said because the person inside has to let Jesus in."

Some Reflections On Religion And Politics, John Harman May 2008

Some Reflections On Religion And Politics, John Harman

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Religion and politics are intertwined historically, sociologically, maybe even genetically. They are practically inseparable. Yet many people seem to find this relationship appalling, unintelligible, or illegitimate. The topic of the connections between religion and politics excites tremendous passion, pro and con, in many. Some see the connections as appropriate, laudable, even necessary for the survival of civilized life and democracy. Others, looking at different dimensions, regard any influence on political life from religious quarters as fundamentally immoral, irrational, unconstitutional and hostile to democracy. There is truth in both views. …

The sex of the advice-giver and advice-receiver as well as the relationship quality between them was explored in order to highlight how these variables affect advice use and helpfulness. Utilizing a questionnaire and interviews with individual newlywed husbands (n = 56) and wives (n = …

A Qualitative Case Study Of Developing Teacher Identity Among American Indian Secondary Teachers From The Ute Teacher Training Program, Virginia Norris Exton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this foundational study was to explore the factors that contributed to developing teacher identity among new American Indian teachers. Multifaceted research into the history of American Indian education, the design of American Indian teacher training programs, and the beliefs and experiences of four American Indian secondary teachers gave this study a richly detailed context.

Three overarching patterns emerged during the process of analyzing the data: (a) solidarity and independence, (b) habit and change, and (c) tradition and invention. From these patterns, six factors were identified as contributing to developing teacher identity. School-based experiences that affected developing teacher …

A Comparison Of Two Distinctive Jazz Trombone Artists, David Steinmeyer And Curtis Fuller, Eddie Lee Elsey Jr. May 2008

A Comparison Of Two Distinctive Jazz Trombone Artists, David Steinmeyer And Curtis Fuller, Eddie Lee Elsey Jr.

Dissertations

This dissertation discusses two jazz trombonists, David Steinmeyer and Curtis Fuller. Six solos performed by these two artists are analyzed for the purpose of studying and comparing their individual styles of playing. Each solo is analyzed melodically, harmonically, and rhythmically with musical excerpts from each solo included to provide emphasis on a particular area.

This dissertation also includes comparisons of overall styles, full transcriptions of each solo, discographies for both artists, and brief biographical sketches of each artist. Although the artists play in different styles, they still share similar philosophies in approaching the performance of playing jazz trombone.

A Performer's Analysis Of Eric Ewazen's Sonata For Trumpet And Piano, Joseph Daniel Mcnally Iii May 2008

A Performer's Analysis Of Eric Ewazen's Sonata For Trumpet And Piano, Joseph Daniel Mcnally Iii

Dissertations

Eric Ewazen is a prolific composer whose works are becoming standard repertoire for not only trumpet players but also for brass quintets, soloists, and wind ensembles alike. Ewazen wrote the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano for the International Trumpet Guild, and it was premiered by Chris Gekker, trumpet, and Ewazen, piano, in 1995 in Bloomington, Indiana.

This document illuminates some of the characteristics of Ewazen's music, and summarizes the music's technical and performance demands, based on firsthand performing experience. It should also offer practical observations and recommendations for the performance of Eric Ewazen's Sonata for Trumpet and Piano.

Grandmothering And Social Old Age: Aotearoa New Zealand Variations On A Universal Theme, M. Jocelyn Armstrong May 2008

Grandmothering And Social Old Age: Aotearoa New Zealand Variations On A Universal Theme, M. Jocelyn Armstrong

Pacific Studies

This paper explores change in definition and relevance of the grandparenting role in a population of young-old (ages sixty-five to eighty) women in urban New Zealand, and compares the experience of European and Maori women. I focus on how becoming and being a grandparent is configured into perceptions of social old age and seniority. New Zealand women of both ethnic groups recognize becoming a grandmother as still commonly considered a key marker of social old age by society at large. Differences are evident in ideas about how the role contributes to today's self-definitions. In women's own definitions, being a grandmother …

Continuities And Changes In Marshallese Grandparenting, Laurence Marshall Carucci May 2008

Continuities And Changes In Marshallese Grandparenting, Laurence Marshall Carucci

Pacific Studies

For Marshallese, grandparents do not exist as independent types of kin. A grandparent is a partner in a reciprocal grandparent/grandchild relationship. The relationship is not grounded in either biology or unchanging social status; rather, it is constructed out of practical activities as members of a shared community. Grandparents who actively earn respect in their relationships with others are recognized collectively as senior grandparents of the community or communal grandparents. This paper examines continuities and changes in the activities and social significance of grandparents of the community across three decades and four different social settings. The paper focuses on how shifting …

In My Nana's House: Grandparent Households In Fiji, Sela Panapasa May 2008

In My Nana's House: Grandparent Households In Fiji, Sela Panapasa

Pacific Studies

This paper uses a combination of household census data and case material to examine change in grandparent status and role in Fiji in the context of develop ment and the impacts of modernization and population aging. On one hand, there is more need and pressure for grandparents to be caregivers of grand children and sources of stability and continuity within family and home. On the other, there are the increased costs associated with greater longevity among the grandparent generation, such as care of a frail and dependent grandparent. Social exchange theory is used to compare these costs and benefits across …

Continuing To Be A Mother: Grandmothering On Pollap, Juliana Flinn May 2008

Continuing To Be A Mother: Grandmothering On Pollap, Juliana Flinn

Pacific Studies

Perspectives from human evolution and life cycle development frame this paper on grandmothering in a Micronesian setting. On Pollap Atoll in the Central Caroline Islands, being a grandmother is part of a developmental process that involves aging and a changing parental role. Being an older woman is interwoven with being a grandmother in much the same way as being an adult woman is interwoven with being a mother. Much of the work of a grandmother toward grandchildren involves continuing responsibilities to one's adult child. Today's grandmothers continue to carry out these responsibilities in the context of adaptation to migration. The …

Guest Editors' Preface: Special Issue Negotiating Grandparenting: Styles And Strategies In A Changing Pacific, M. Jocelyn Armstrong, Juliana Flinn May 2008

Guest Editors' Preface: Special Issue Negotiating Grandparenting: Styles And Strategies In A Changing Pacific, M. Jocelyn Armstrong, Juliana Flinn

Pacific Studies

This preface introduces a collection of anthropological studies that explore grandparenting practices in Pacific societies, situating them within the global context of population aging and evolving family dynamics. As longevity increases worldwide, grandparenting has gained prominence across disciplines and regions. This volume highlights how cultural values, historical contexts, and contemporary changes—such as shifts in education, economy, migration, and family structure—shape the roles and meanings of grandparents in Pacific communities. Three key themes emerge: the relationship between grandparenting and elder status, the diverse styles of grandparenting influenced by identity factors like gender and ethnicity, and grandparenting as an adaptive strategy in …
