This action research study explored if changes in the reading curriculum, specifically implementation of critical literacy approaches that acknowledge bicultural students, increase student learning as perceived by teachers and students in a Catholic elementary school, where students have been chronically performing at the lowest level in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. By using critical pedagogy (Darder, 1991; Freire, 1970; Giroux, 1983; Macedo, 1994; McLaren, 1988) as a theoretical framework, this action research project investigated the effective elements of critical literacy (Cadiero-Kaplan, 2004; Shor & Pari, 1999) that promote academic learning for Latino middle school students in a low-income Catholic elementary …

The purpose of this study was to research student perspectives about, and participation in, leadership and service at Catholic female single-sex high schools. This study draws data from a Catholic female single-sex high school in a metropolitan area of the United States. Data collection included school document review, site observation, and interviews of current students (n=10), young alumnae (n=5), mature alumnae (n=5), and current faculty and staff (n=6). The data was analyzed using an adapted theoretical framework of Wenger's (1998) social theory of learning, informed by Lave and Wenger's (1991) concept of communities of practice. For this study, a web-based survey method was used as a means of collecting data to test a predictive model of education, supervised clinical experience (SCE), age, human services experience (HSE) and cognitive complexity. The theoretical framework for the study was Perry's (1970; 1999) scheme of intellectual development. The sample consisted of 332 counseling and social work students in graduate training programs in four different regions of the United States. The instruments used in the study were a researcher-developed demographic questionnaire and the Learning Environment Preferences (LEP) instrument (Moore, 1987). Twentieth century human settlement within the Tampa Bay watershed was linked to a dramatic mid-century decline in bay water quality and loss of seagrass acreage. Decades of direct and indirect nutrient discharges to the bay from phosphorus mining, fertilizer manufacturing, and wastewater treatment, as examples, impaired the estuary. In the past twenty years, regional stakeholders have worked to improve the bay water quality by reducing point and non-point source nutrient loading to the bay.

Studies of larger symbiont-bearing foraminifers on reefs have revealed their potential as indicators of environmental stress because of their physiological analogies to corals (dependence on algal symbionts for growth and calcification) and relatively short life cycle (a few months to 2 years or more). The purpose of this study is to report distribution patterns and population densities of larger benthic foraminifers (LBF) of the Florida reef tract, specifically reporting abundance data collected from offshore (1995-2000, 2006, 2007) and patch reefs (1996, 2006, 2007).

Research has demonstrated that customer sexual harassment (CSH) is a frequently occurring phenomenon and an apparent barrier to the career development of women (Gettman & Gelfand, 2007; Morganson & Major, 2008). The current study applies psychological contract theory toward understanding how CSH leads to adverse outcomes, which affect individuals and organizations. A sample of 420 working women including both students and full-time non-student workers from various organizations were recruited to participate in this online study. CSH and perceptions of employer obligation did not interact to predict psychological contract breach. As hypothesized, psychological contract breach and CSH interacted to predict affective …

บทความวิจัยนี้มุ่งศึกษาการสื่อมโนทัศน์กรรมวาจกใน ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยโดยการใช้คำกริยาบอกผลในตัวบทสองประเภท ได้แก่ ตัวบทประเภทเน้นการแสดงออกและตัวบทประเภทให้ ข้อมูล เพื่อหาว่า 1) การสื่อมโนทัศน์โดยใช้คํากริยาบอกผลนั้น นอกจากจะพบในตัวบทประเภทเน้นการแสดงออกแล้ว ยังสามารถพบในตัวบท ประเภทให้ข้อมูลได้ด้วยหรือไม่ 2) ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเภทของตัว บทและกลวิธีการแปลมีผลหรือไม่อย่างไรต่อการสื่อมโนทัศน์โดยใช้ คำกริยาบอกผล 3) มีปัจจัยอื่นใดบ้างที่เอื้อให้เกิดการสื่อมโนทัศน์ด้วย กลวิธีเช่นนั้น และ 4) เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะและจำแนกประเภทของคู่คำกริยา บอกเหตุและกริยาบอกผลที่พบออกเป็นหมวดหมู่โดยใช้เกณฑ์ที่เหมาะสม

การเรียนภาษาต่างประเทศในประเทศไทยที่ยังไม่ประสบ ความสำเร็จเท่าที่ควรอาจเพราะอาจารย์ผู้สอนและผู้เรียนมักมีความถนัด ในการสอนและเรียนภาษาโดยยึดไวยากรณ์เป็นหลัก โดยมักเข้าใจว่าการ เรียนภาษาก็คือการเรียนไวยากรณ์ของภาษานั้น หรืออีกนัยหนึ่งก็คือ เข้าใจว่าการมีความรู้เกี่ยวกับภาษานั้นเป็นเครื่องแสดงว่ารู้ภาษานั้นแล้ว ดังนั้น ผู้เรียนชาวไทยส่วนใหญ่จึงไม่สามารถนำความรู้ภาษาต่างประเทศที่ ตนได้เรียนไปใช้สื่อสารกับชาวต่างประเทศเจ้าของภาษาได้ทั้ง ๆ ที่ผ่าน การฝึกไวยากรณ์มาอย่างมาก ผู้วิจัยจึงต้องการศึกษาว่า ถ้ามีการจัดการเรียนการสอน ภาษาเยอรมันที่มีเนื้อหาที่เป็นสถานการณ์การสื่อสารที่ผู้เรียนสามารถ นำไปใช้ได้โดยตรงในอนาคต เรียนโดยเน้นทักษะการฟังและพูด มีฝึกการ ออกเสียงภาษาเยอรมันอย่างถูกต้องที่เจ้าของภาษาฟังเข้าใจได้ และมีการ จัดกระบวนการเรียนรู้ที่เน้นให้ผู้เรียนรับผิดชอบในการเรียนของตนแล้ว ผู้เรียนน่าจะเรียนภาษาเยอรมันได้เร็วและมีประสิทธิภาพในระยะเวลาอัน สั้นได้ ทั้งนี้ โดยอาศัยแนวความคิดเกี่ยวกับการเรียนภาษาเยอรมันในฐานะ ภาษาที่ 3 (Deutsch als Tertiarsprache) และแนวคิดเรื่อง Lerner Autonomy

บทความวิจัยนี้มุ่งศึกษาคําหยาบ "fuck" ในบริบทการสื่อสารใน วรรณกรรมอังกฤษช่วงต้นและช่วงปลายศตวรรษที่ 20 เรื่อง เลดี้ แชตเตอร์ เลย์ส เลิฟเวอร์ และ เทรนสปอตติง และบทแปลภาษาไทย โดยใช้ มาตรฐานความสุภาพของชนชั้นกลางที่มีการศึกษาในบริบทการสื่อสาร ทั่วไปในที่สาธารณะในกรุงเทพมหานครหรือภาษาไทยภาคกลางเป็น เกณฑ์ในการวิเคราะห์ เพื่อศึกษาว่านักแปลมีวิธีการถ่ายทอดคําว่า "fuck" ซึ่งถือได้ว่าเป็นหนึ่งในคําที่หยาบคายที่สุดและมีลักษณะการใช้ที่ หลากหลายมากที่สุดในภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยอย่างไรให้ถูกต้อง เหมาะสม ไม่ซ้ำซากจำเจ ได้อรรถรสทั้งในด้านความหมายและในด้าน ระดับภาษา เพื่อให้ผู้อ่านภาษาฉบับแปลได้รับผลตอบสนองเทียบเคียง (Equivalent Effect) ระดับเดียวกับที่ผู้อ่านภาษาต้นฉบับได้รับ โดยที่ผู้อ่าน ในสังคมและวัฒนธรรมไทยที่มีความอ่อนไหวต่อเรื่องทางเพศและการใช้ ภาษาหยาบคายโดยเฉพาะในที่สาธารณะสามารถยอมรับได้

Evaluating the foreign policies of presidents while they are in office or shortly after their tenure ends can sometimes lead to conclusions that prove to be unsound in the future. The case of Harry Truman exemplifies this. When he left office in 1952 his approval rating was in the 20 percentile range. Yet, he set the tone and direction of United States foreign policy that led eventually to the successful conclusion of the Cold War. Treating Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street and Chang-rae Lee's Native Speaker as Erziehungsroman—that is, stories whose coming-of-age process depends on the characters' education—reveals the similar process that both Esperanza Cordero and Henry Park experience as they navigate the 1960s and 1970s American school system. The most important obstacle in Esperanza's and Henry's ability to achieve academically is the contract of vagueness, the tacit agreement between federal education policy and English language learning (ELL) students to misunderstand one another. Differing cultural conceptions of education perpetuate this mutually detrimental relationship between education policy and ELL students, forcing Henry and Esperanza …

This thesis centers on my Afro-Cuban culture (specifically addressing the experience of being a Black Cuban Woman in America). While the general objective of writing poems address my ancestry, the subject matter of this work can also be seen to alternate between identity and human relationships, between the experiences of being Black and being a woman. Document design is a hybrid field of study that emerged &om both graphic design and professional writing. Emergency management planning occurs at all levels of government and documents processes, procedures and responsibilities of responding agencies to a disaster situation. An examination of the rhetorical elements of audience, context and purpose enables application of appropriate document design in any type of document, including emergency management plans, because the rhetorical situation of a document helps to determine appropriate design cues appropriate for the specific audience, context or purpose of that specific document.

Amanda Flather’s research on gender and space offers a new and exciting perspective on social relations in the early modern period, despite a somewhat weak introduction. Drawing on sociological and anthropological theory, Flather argues that understanding the interaction between the historic spatial environment and the social construction of identity illuminates our understanding of gender and agency. Influenced by Anthony Giddens and Pierre Bourdieu, Flather explores the claim that space was not simply a passive backdrop against which gender identities were played out. How space was used within individual spaces allows the difference between prescription and practice to be brought to …

Eusebio Sanchez Lara started working since he was a child because his parents died. His four brothers and him started working as farmers. Sanchez heard about the bracero program and was hired in Empalme, Sonora. Sanchez worked in Santa Ana, California picking cucumbers, tomatoes, pumpkins and chili. Sanchez renewed his contract in Santa Ana for three consecutive years. Sanchez also worked picking broccoli and lettuce in Phoenix, Arizona; He remembers that picking lettuce was the work that he liked least. He got hired for the last time in 1974 and worked in Yuba City picking tomatoes and peaches.

The Sicilian Questions are the earliest pre-served text of the philosopher and Sufi Ibn Sab‘īn of Murcia (c. 614/1217-668/1270). Even though the prologue of the text claims that it is a response to questions sent by Frederick II to the Arab world, it seems more likely that it was an introductory manual for Arab students of philosophy, dealing with four specific and controversial problems as away of presenting general concepts of Aristotelian philosophy. This project is by and large a project of elucidation: it may add something to studies of Kenneth Burke, but I doubt it adds much to Kenneth Burke's studies. This thesis begins and ends with analyses of Burke's famous motto Ad Bellum Purificandum (or Toward the Purification of War). The Introduction focuses on "war" while the Conclusion focuses on "purification." In short, purified war is a dialectical activity which actively and perpetually pits divergent perspectives against each other. Such an activity keeps the conflictual nature of divergent perspectives in verbal and symbolic arenas rather than physical ones. Burke owes this …

The name of the society is a bit misleading since the Society is composed of individuals not libraries. ARLIS has members whose responsibilities are in art, architecture, and design, and who work in museums, public libraries, academic libraries and visual resources collections. The Society holds an annual conference, has an active publications program, maintains a complex web site, and addresses the continuing education needs of its members.
