Susan Manly. Language, Custom And Nation In The 1790s: Locke, Tooke, Wordsworth, Edgeworth, James C. Mckusick

A Review by James C. McKusick. In Language, Custom and Nation in the 1790s, Susan Manly demonstrates how a populist and materialist philosophy of language contributed to the radical politics and poetics of the British Romantic period. The distinctive scholarly contribution of Language, Custom and Nation, in the 1790s is to show how a Lockean theory of language provided a conceptual framework for some of the most radical and transformative political ideas of the 1790s.

We can think of technology and Christianity as competing forms of life. Technology promises a life of ever greater liberty and prosperity where liberty is the liberation from the limits and burdens of the human condition and prosperity is the variety and refinement of pleasures. Christianity bears the good news of salvation, the assurance that the coming of Christ has enabled us to live a life of grace and love that is affirmed by eternal life in the presence of God.

An overview of the history of a dynasty of flutists, flute manufacturers and music publishers established by English emigrant Edward R. Riley in New York. Riley and copperplate printer Thomas Adams formed the firm Riley & Adams in 1812. It is said that all his three sons became music publishers, music instrument manufacturers and retailers.

Historical and popular understandings of the American constitutional tradition have adopted the contentions of only one side of this debate and its role in bringing about the 1787 constitution. In doing so, these accounts miss much of that tradition’s actual history.
