"Temple Pro Tempore": The Salt Lake City Endowment House, Lisle G. Brown

The Salt Lake City Endowment House, built of adobe, was located on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. It served as a temporary temple during the construction of the Salt Lake Temple. It was completed in 1855 and razed in 1889. Using original floor plans, photographs, maps, and descriptions by persons who participated in its sacretodal activities, the author recreates its exterior and interior appearance. Floor plans and elevations of the building, prepared especially for the paper, are also included. The events leading to is destruction are chronicled. Finally, the author discusses the building’s influence on subsequent Mormon temple …

Time-Transcendent Father-Son Dynamics In Antigone, Olivia Spadlowski

In the ancient tragedy Antigone, the Greek dramatist Sophocles presents a primary conflict that features a desperate struggle for dominance and challenges the blind justification of authoritative power. Although the tragedy bears the name of its doomed heroine as its title, I argue that it is the character of Creon who provides the audience with a cathartic release through the development of his humanity in the course of the play. He is the figure most akin to the classical Aristotelian definition of the traditional tragic hero. Creon is more emotionally developed and the breadth of his humanity is greatly accessible …

The Martyred Maternal Body In Pedro De Fuentes' Doña Francisca La Cautiva, Stacey L. Parker Aronson

In the nineteenth-century romance “Doña Francisca la cautiva [the captive]” written by Pedro de Fuentes (1831), the Virgin Mary convinces a woman to redeem a man through her Christian influence. The female body becomes the instrument to bring about this spiritual redemption. During a trip from Naples to Rome, Doña Francisca, accompanied by her three children, is kidnapped by Turkish pirates and enslaved by the Renegade, a former Christian slave converted to Islam. This romance was written during the Tanzimat period between 1830 and 1880 when Ottoman writers and activists advocated the elimination of slavery within the Ottoman Empire. This …
