Россия полиэтнична. Состав ее населения, сложившийся в длительном процессе формирования Российского государства, включает в себя сегодня (по переписи 2002 г.) около 160 этносов. Это означает, что единая система российской общеобразовательной школы в осуществлении своих функций объективно имеет дело с чрезвычайно сложным языково‐, этнокультурно‐ и этноментально‐ неоднородным и разнохарактерным контингентом учащихся. Закон «Об образовании» 1992 г. решил эту проблему с помощью компонентного принципа организации содержания образования, позволяющего удовлетворить интересы разных субъектов образовательного пространства: государства и общества – через федеральный компонент, этносов и локальных сообществ – через региональный (национально‐ региональный) компонент. Deconstructing Hate Speech In The Drc: A Psychological Media Sensitization Campaign, Johann Vollhardt, Marie Coutin, Ervin Staub, George Weiss, Johan Deflander

This article describes an interdisciplinary and theory-based radio campaign that has been developed to counteract, and sensitize citizens to hate speech in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The article provides a brief overview of the instrumentalization of hate speech and the violent effects it has had in the Great Lakes region of Africa. A summary of the most recent events in the DRC is given. Here, hate speech was used in the presidential election campaigns in 2006, contributing to a polarization of the country and giving the campaign an ethnic underpinning. While the typical hate crime is perceived to be of a violent nature perpetrated by individuals connected to Nazi and neo-Nazi groups and white supremacists, a more insidious form of hatred exists in the form of hate propaganda (Kinsella 1994; Martin 1995; Sher 1983; Sunahara 1981; Abella and Trooper 1982; Barrett 1987; Betcherman 1975; Bolaria and Li 1985; Frideres 1976). In Canada “hate messages take a variety of forms including flaming crosses, heckling at memorial services, music, and desecration of synagogues, mosques, or temples” (Commission for Racial Equality 1999, quoted in Kazarian 1998, 204). “In the winter of 1992, alone …

Ultranationalist and religious fundamentalist movements frequently use hate to mobilize people. These groups possess a sophisticated understanding of the importance of appealing to the emotions. Leaders often employ xenophobic language intended to inspire fear and justify a defensive reaction. The movements also rely heavily upon symbols, myths, and public events to simplify and communicate the “truths” of their ideologies. The leaders convey messages with tremendous affective appeal. Yet, measures exist to counter and contain the politics of hate. The development of civil society, group rights, a free media, and integrated institutions can contribute to a durable solution in cases of …

Genocide On The Airwaves: An Analysis Of The International Law Concerning Radio Jamming, Meghna Rajadhyaksha

Using the Rwandan genocide as an example, this article makes a case for allowing the jamming of radios that are broadcasting hate speech in situations in which such hate speech would incite genocide. To this end, it discusses the law relating to freedom of speech and communication in international law and its relative position when applied to genocide. Further, it analyzes the traditional notions of state sovereignty to make a case for humanitarian intervention by radio jamming. Moritz Oppenheim, The Rothschilds, And The Construction Of Jewish Identity, Everett Eugene Dodd Iii

This thesis provides an overview of Moritz Daniel Oppenheim's portraits of the Rothschild family with attention paid to the artist's training and personal artistic pursuits, as well as participation in Gentile and Jewish discourses. Oppenheim's knowledge of art history and use of style in creating the identities of his Rothschild subjects are the focus of this study. Oppenheim's methods and use of art historical styles are discussed with deference to the public or private nature of the portraits, and the resulting works' engagement of both German and Jewish issues. Methodologies used include the history of style and identity theory.

I naturally like sculpture. My artistic medium of choice is sculpture because it occupies physical space commands attention and thought. The expressive qualities found in steel are numerous as they are in manipulation of found materials. Both materials involve a process of discovery on an evolving road towards any sculpture's ultimate conclusion. My primary goal is that my sculpture should be personal and capture the viewer's eye, stir his or her subconscious, and serve as a form of communication.

Psychology and theatre have a remarkable amount in common. In using the basic concepts and theories of psychology, actors can develop more concrete, logical approaches to characters. This thesis is a summation of the course I developed, "Psychology and the Theatre," which was an attempt to teach students introductory psychology and then experiment with translating those concepts to character analysis and stage performance. Students were taught eight units of psychology: Sensation, Perception, and Memory; Learning; Motivation and Emotion; Development; Freud and Psychodynamic Approaches to Personality; Adlerian Individual Psychology; Love and Social Cognition; and Psychological Disorders. Packaging and package design is commonly thought of as a tool to attract the consumer to material goods. Packages, however, have other attributes. In Japan, packaging design is very charming because of the delicate selection of materials, images, and interaction. Different kinds of material provide different emotions and appeal to our sense of touch, which can be interpreted in many ways. Packaging lets us directly interact with an object and this experience becomes memorable and intimate. The combination of image and interaction creates another dimension of story telling.
