Gemma graduated from Fordham University and the FCRH honors college in the spring of 1959 with a degree egregia cum laude in history. He was drawn to the honors program initially for its unique study abroad opportunities. While most students who elected to study abroad attended the structured FCRH honors program in Paris, France, Gemma wanted to go to Italy. Being Italian, studying philosophy and theology in Florence and Rome was very important to him, and he even created his own structured program with tutors from the Jesuit Gregorian Institute and lectures at the Università per Stranieri. Student Perceptions Of Native And Non-Native Speaker Language Instructors: A Comparison Of Esl And Spanish, Laura Callahan

The question of the native vs. non-native speaker status of second and foreign language instructors has been investigated chiefly from the perspective of the teacher. Anecdotal evidence suggests that students have strong opinions on the relative qualities of instruction by native and non-native speakers. Most research focuses on students of English as a foreign or second language. This paper reports on data gathered through a questionnaire administered to 55 university students: 31 students of Spanish as FL and 24 students of English as SL. Qualitative results show what strengths students believe each type of instructor has, and quantitative results confirm …

To engage in voluntarism, as the term is commonly understood today, is to freely offer support in the service of others. Defining the concept in such general terms, however, ignores a number of important factors, such as the motives leading individuals to choose such action, the means by which the activity occurs, and the broader implications of voluntarism for society. This chapter looks at voluntarism from a historical perspective to demonstrate the numerous and sometimes conflicting ways the concept has been understood. Both William Faulkner and Gabriel García Márquez introduce the olfactory as a focal element in their writing, producing works that challenge the singular primacy of sight as the unrivaled means by which the New World might be understood. As they translate experiences of the New World into language, both writers record the power of olfactory perception to reflect memory and history, to shape identity, to mark unmistakably certain crisis moments of ethical action, and to delineate a form of knowledge crucial to their New World poetics of the novel. The Effects Of Contextual Interference On The Acquisition, Retention, And Transfer Of A Music Motor Skill Among University Musicians, Leslie Paige Rose

The contextual interference hypothesis holds that simple motor skill tasks are best learned when practiced under blocked, or repetitive conditions, but that retention and transfer are best accomplished when the skill has been practiced in varied conditions. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of contextual interference practice conditions on the acquisition, retention, and transfer of a complex task—right hand lead percussion sticking technique among university musicians. All participants (N = 120) demonstrated rhythmic competency for the task, and were necessarily unable to perform the sticking technique with accuracy at the start of treatment. My dissertation examines the rewriting of myths by writers from the Ivory Coast: Maïéto Pour Zékia by Bohui Dali, La guerre des femmes by Zadi Zaourou, La révolte d'Affiba by Régina Yaou and Assémien Déhylé, roi du Sanwi by Bernard Dadié. I analyze these texts in the context of nineteenth and twenty century French works by Baudelaire (Le peintre de la vie moderne); Camus (Le mythe de Sisyphe); Aragon (Le paysan de Paris). While sports games try to recreate the atmosphere of a stadium or of television broadcasts of games, role-playing and action adventure games attempt to duplicate cinematography through animation. For Tomb Raider, the virtual reality created by the cinematic animation of the game produces an environment for male-to-female cross-gender identification, a topic that has received little critical attention. The Influence Of Initial Consonants On The Intrinsic Pitch Of High And Low Vowels In The Malay Dialect Spoken In Pathumthani Province, Thailand, Phanintra Teeranon

High vowels tend to have higher intrinsic F0 (pitch) than low vowels (e.g. Lehiste, 1970; Whalen and Levitt, 1995). Higher intrinsic F0 occurs on vowels which follow voiceless consonants, lower intrinsic F0 occurs on vowels which follow voiced consonants. When high vowels follow voiced consonants and low vowels follow voiceless consonants, the voicing of initial consonants has been found to counterbalance the intrinsic F0 value of high and low vowels. In other words, voiced consonants will lower F0 values of high vowels, and voiceless consonants will raise F0 values of low vowels to the extent that the average F0 of …

The study surveys eating terms in Thai to find out complexities of the way the Thai people really categorize. It employs devices of a new view that takes more complex categorization as the main way in which we make sense of experience. Kurt Wais (1907-1995) would be 100 years old on 9 January 2007. He was Professor of Romance Philology and Comparative Literature at Tubingen University until his retirement in 1975. Villages located in mangrove areas reported no major damage. It is apparent that, if the villagers live in harmony with nature, the mangroves protect them in return.
