Missio Politica Oecumenica: Mission And Political Action In The Life And Thought Of Johannes Verkuyl (1908-2001), Hidalgo B. Garcia

This is a study on the relationship between evangelism and church planting and political action. Against the background of polarization between the ecumenical movement and the evangelical movement on the question, the study demonstrates that missio politica oecumenica defined as struggle for justice and righteousness and against evil is a distinct and integral aspect of mission, alongside kerygma, koinonia, and diakonia. It develops this thesis from the life and thought of Johannes Verkuyl (1908- 2001), a Dutch Reformed missionary to Indonesia who was involved in the decolonization of the country. The DVD documentary Journey of Faith (Maxwell Institute, 2006) continues in expanded form in this book, Journey of Faith: From Jerusalem to the Promised Land. The documentary was filmed in the Middle East at locations that scholars believe mark or approximate the route that took Lehi’s party across Arabia to reach the seaside location where they eventually embarked by ship to the New World. Like the DVD, the book will enrich one’s study of the opening chapters of the Book of Mormon.

In the years since 1989, there has been a wealth of scholarly research into role of denunciation in supporting Germany’s two twentieth-century authoritarian regimes. The shocking revelation after the collapse of East German communism and the opening of the Stasi archives that hundreds of thousands of GDR citizens had served as ‘informal collaborators’ with the secret police seemed to help explain how a relatively small police organization managed to create a culture of terror and conformity. By focusing on the cooperation of ordinary citizens with policing institutions in the surveillance of public and private behaviors, scholars of Nazi Germany have …

Commercial space travel is looking more like a real possibility than science fiction, but tied to that ambition we may be held back by the gravity of emerging ethical dilemmas. This viewpoint article surveys a range of social, economic, and political questions, and critically evaluates reasons why we should explore space. This paper aims to extend the purview of critical GIS to also account for what would be akin to a critical GPS by examining two cases where GPS technology is used as a similar means to two decidedly different ends. I look at Acme-Rent-a-Car’s use of GPS technology to track the driving speed of their customers and then fine their customers for speeding, and the Amsterdam Real-Time Project’s recent use of GPS technology to create, for aesthetic purposes, maps of the real-time movements of individual Amsterdam citizens. Recent discussions of human categories have suffered from an over emphasis on intention and language, and have not paid enough attention to the role of material conditions, and, specifically, of social space in the construction of human categories. The relationship between human categories and social spaces is vital, especially with the categories of class, race, and gender. This paper argues that social space is not merely the consequent of the division of the world into social categories; it is constitutive of social categories. The Dutch-born Father Frans Jozef van Beeck has been a Jesuit for nearly 60 years. A respected theologian and teacher, he has written several books on ecclesiology and on the Catholic Church’s relationship with Judaism. The Museum of San Marco in Florence, Italy, is renowned for the works of Fra Angelico (1395 - 1455) and for the pervasive history of the Dominican Order. The presence of the extraordinary fresco cycle (1437 - 1441) in the dormitory cells on the upper floor by the great friar-artist makes it a sanctuary for Fra Angelico’s art, and transforms the convent into one of the most important sites for early Renaissance painting. In this examination of Fra Angelico’s frescoes at San Marco, there is a specific emphasis on his unique use of light in his painting, encompassing three identifiable …

Lucas Van Leyden's Dance Around The Golden Calf: The Northern Triptych In The Age Of The Reformation, Jennifer R. Pease

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper focuses on Lucas van Leyden's 1530 triptych Dance Around the Golden Calf. It is shown through a stylistic and iconographic analysis of the painting that it is a piece reflective of the tensions and upheaval prevalent during the Reformation-era society in which it was produced. This was a time when Northern European artists such as Lucas began an increase in secularism in their work, demonstrating the dawn of a new era in the church. Lucas effectively uses visual contradiction and psychological implication to respond artistically to the tumultuous age of the Reformation.

Use Of General Preservation Assessments: Outputs, Karen E.K. Brown

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

This study describes the extent to which institutions implement preservation recommendations resulting from a general needs assessment, including the time to implementation and the extent of program development. Most recommendations are preventive, with less emphasis on repair or reformatting activities. Data indicate that the majority of institutions accomplish recommended preservation actions with no neglected subject areas. Institutions with the highest rates of success spent more staff time preparing for the site visit, and had a longer site visit, compared to the population as a whole. Preparation of a preservation plan does not correlate to an enhanced capacity to implement preservation …

Psychoanalysis possesses the means to think the difference of the sexes without relying on the phallus. Lacanian theory of the sinthome offers an alternative by articulating a new quadruplicity (R, S, I, and the sinthome), which allows us to think the relation between the sexes and the generations without necessarily referring to the Name-of-the-Father or the phallus as absolute norms. Thanks to this theory, we can avoid the moral and political prejudices that accompany the grand questions of society posed to us at the dawn of the 21st century: the treatment of “mental health,” the legislation of marriage, filiation, and …
