Il Y A L'Autre Dans Le Je(U) : Le Monologue Chez Brian Friel, Noel Fitzpatrick

Conference papers

This conference paper (in French) explores the construction of interlocution in the monologues of Brian Friel's theatre. It proposes a novel means of analysis of the monologue by mobilising key developments in French pragmatic linguistic analysis of I and You and interlocution.

Assessment Of Muscle Activity And Joint Angles In Small-Handed Pianists:, Brenda Wristen, Myung-Chul Jung, A. K. G. Wismer, M. Susan Hallbeck

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

This pilot study examined whether the use of a 7/8 keyboard contributed to the physical ease of small-handed pianists as compared with the conventional piano keyboard. A secondary research question focused on the progression of physical ease in pianists making the transition from one keyboard to the other. For the purposes of this study, a hand span of 8 inches or less was used to define a "small-handed" pianist. The goal was to measure muscle loading and hand span during performance of a specified musical excerpt. For data collection, each of the two participants was connected to an 8-channel electromyography …

Sight-Reading Versus Repertoire Performance On The Piano: A Case Study Using High-Speed Motion Analysis, Brenda Wristen, Sharon Evfans, Nikolaos Stergiou Mar 2006

Sight-Reading Versus Repertoire Performance On The Piano: A Case Study Using High-Speed Motion Analysis, Brenda Wristen, Sharon Evfans, Nikolaos Stergiou

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

This study was intended to examine whether differences exist in the motions employed by pianists when they are sightreading versus performing repertoire and to determine whether these differences can be quantified using high-speed motion capture technology. A secondary question of interest was whether or not an improvement in the efficiency of motion could be observed between two sight-reading trials of the same musical excerpt. This case study employed one subject and a six-camera digital infrared camera system to capture the motion of the pianist playing two trials of a repertoire piece and two trials of a sight-reading excerpt. Angular displacements …

The Ends And Means Of Public Art Making: A Case Study Of "Public Art" And "Art In Public" In The Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Region, Svetlana Gennadyevna Karasyova Mar 2006

The Ends And Means Of Public Art Making: A Case Study Of "Public Art" And "Art In Public" In The Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Region, Svetlana Gennadyevna Karasyova

Dissertations and Theses

The subject of public art has been prolifically but narrowly discussed in conjunction with controversies over particular public artworks. To investigate more broadly the complex aesthetic, institutional, social and political dimensions of public art, I examine a pluralistic landscape comprising nine arts organizations in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan region. A neo-Marxist framework defined by David Harvey organizes the case findings into four topics: material practices or public art outcomes; beliefs, values and desires; institutions and their rituals; and power and social relations.

I capture the differences among the arts organizations by portraying them as metaphorically inhabiting unique spaces in the …

The Death Of Kirby Puckett, Richard C. Crepeau Mar 2006

The Death Of Kirby Puckett, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

What to say when a friend dies? It is always a difficult moment for the living. For anyone who was a fan of the Minnesota Twins and of baseball that moment is here again because Kirby Puckett, a great friend to all Twins fans, died yesterday, just a day after suffering a stroke. He was 45. To fans like me he was the archetypal baseball player, and although I never met him, he was the friendly round man in centerfield who did so much for the struggling baseball franchise in Minnesota. He was a friend to anyone who ever saw …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Type Ii Silicon And Germanium Clathrates, Matthew K. Beekman Mar 2006

Synthesis And Characterization Of Type Ii Silicon And Germanium Clathrates, Matthew K. Beekman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Clathrate materials comprise compounds in which guest atoms or molecules can be encapsulated inside atomic cages formed by host framework polyhedra. The unique relationship that exists between the guest species and its host results in a wide range of physical phenomena, and offers the ability to study the physics of structure-property relationships in crystalline solids. Clathrates are actively being investigated in fields such as thermoelectrics, superconductivity, optoelectronics, and photovoltaics among others. The structural subset known as type II clathrates have been studied far less than other clathrates, and this forms the impetus for the present work. In particular, the known …
