Antisthenes' Theory Of Unique Enunciation: Similarities, Differences, And Possible Influences, Fouad Kalouche Mar 2006

Antisthenes' Theory Of Unique Enunciation: Similarities, Differences, And Possible Influences, Fouad Kalouche

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

In this paper I will focus on Antisthenes’ theory of unique enunciation, and will then discuss its similarities and differences with, and/or possible influences on, other theories on language that flourished around the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE. I showed elsewhere that Antisthenes’ theory of language is a practical application or a strategy that has direct implication for his ethical project. My aim here is merely to highlight the originality and relevance of Antisthenes’ theory by presenting it and contextualizing it, before assessing relevant similarities and differences between certain positions of Antisthenes and those of some Skeptics, Sophists, Cyrenaics, and …

The Concept Of Abstraction, Allan Bäck Mar 2006

The Concept Of Abstraction, Allan Bäck

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Philosophers deal with abstractions. Being reflective, they also have come up with theories about what these abstractions are. Aristotle is no exception, and indeed gave what came to be a canonical account of abstraction. Here I shall investigate what Aristotle thinks abstraction is. I shall conclude that Aristotle views abstraction as selective attention.

As its very name suggests, abstracting (ἀφαιρέω) consists in taking away something from an object. The root verb, αἱρέω, suggests additionally a sense of grasping or of choosing, of taking for oneself something of what lies ready to hand.

These lexical meanings leave open a wide range …

Tracking Fluid Flow In A Spinning Disk Reactor, Valentina N. Korzhova Mar 2006

Tracking Fluid Flow In A Spinning Disk Reactor, Valentina N. Korzhova

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The flow of a liquid film over a rapidly rotating horizontal disk has many applications inmedical, industrial, and engineering fields. A specific example is the heat and mass transfer processes between expanded liquid and surrounded dense gas. Diferent wave regimes of a liquid film depend on a flow conditions such as the properties of a liquid, its initial speed, parameters of environment, etc. Therefore, experimental investigation of the film flow over a spinning disk is needed to both validate theoretical predictions and establish methods for fluid flow monitoring. This thesis presents novel video-based algorithms for detection and tracking wave structural data of …

Prototype And Testing Of A Mems Microcooler Based On Magnetocaloric Effect, Simone L. Ghirlanda Mar 2006

Prototype And Testing Of A Mems Microcooler Based On Magnetocaloric Effect, Simone L. Ghirlanda

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis documents the work and research effort on the design, fabrication and testing of a magnetocaloric MEMS microcooler, focusing on the testing of the microcooler at low magnetic fields. The phenomenon of magnetocaloric effect (MCE), or adiabatic temperature change, which is obtained by heating or cooling magnetic materials due to a varying magnetic field, can be exploited in the area of magnetic refrigeration as a reliable, energy-efficient cooling system. In particular, its applications are being explored primarily in cryogenic technologies as a viable process for the liquefaction of hydrogen. The challenge for magnetic refrigeration is that the necessary MCE …

Digital Storytelling: The Application Of Vichian Theory, Karen Pierotti Mar 2006

Digital Storytelling: The Application Of Vichian Theory, Karen Pierotti

Theses and Dissertations

Storytelling is often looked at as something archaic or something that simpler cultures engage in. However, in our sophisticated and highly technological world storytelling swirls about us though we may not always recognize it. This thesis looks at the phenomenon of digital storytelling that functions to create community on the Internet. In order to ground this phenomenon in theory, I examine the works of Giambattista Vico, the 18th-century Neapolitan philosopher/rhetorician, who lived on the cusp of the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. Furthermore, as a teacher of rhetoric to youth, Vico admonished young people to study the arts of …

Palladium Doped Nano Porous Silicon To Enhance Hydrogen Sensing, Kevin Luongo Mar 2006

Palladium Doped Nano Porous Silicon To Enhance Hydrogen Sensing, Kevin Luongo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A mass manufacturable impedance based, palladium doped porous silicon sensor, was fabricated for hydrogen detection. The sensor was built using electrochemical etching to produce mesoporous silicon. Four nanometers of palladium was defused directly into the porous silicon and another four nanometers of Pd was deposited on the defused surface to enhance sensing. The sensor was tested in a sealed chamber in which the impedance was measured while hydrogen in nitrogen was ranged from 0-2 percent. Unlike conventional hydrogen sensors this sensor responded at room temperature to changes in hydrogen concentration. The electrical impedance response due to adsorption and desorption of …

Displaced Self And Sense Of Belonging: A Chinese Researcher Studying Chinese Expatriates Working In The United States, Zhong (June) Wang Mar 2006

Displaced Self And Sense Of Belonging: A Chinese Researcher Studying Chinese Expatriates Working In The United States, Zhong (June) Wang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I tell the story of the ethnographic fieldwork I conducted between 1997 and 2005 in which I focused on a group of expatriates sent by one of China's largest multinational corporations to work in the U.S. for extended years. My initial interest was to investigate how this Chinese state-owned multinational company operated its overseas subsidiaries in the U.S. However, as my fieldwork progressed, I became increasingly interested in how the expatriates' and their family members' careers and lives were impacted by globalization, how these Chinese expatriates and family members adjusted, adapted, understood, and tolerated cultural differences inside …

Irgendwo Muss Man Doch Einmal Hingehoeren': Irmgard Keun As Heiress To The Flaneur.", Matthew D. Embley Mar 2006

Irgendwo Muss Man Doch Einmal Hingehoeren': Irmgard Keun As Heiress To The Flaneur.", Matthew D. Embley

Theses and Dissertations

Flanerie is the art of taking a walk, leisurely observing the movements and spaces of the city. By writing about cityscapes, urban realms, and the condition of society, flaneurs are able to describe the uniqueness of the metropolis and give life to the modern city—creating a photograph of an urban setting. In the early nineteenth century, and even today, flaneur literature has been ultimately dominated by men who have documented their cultural and aesthetic interactions with the city. During these times, unwritten rules have often excluded the female from participating in parts of the urban society. Today, these unwritten rules …

The Rhetoric Of Persecution: Mormon Crisis Rhetoric From 1838-1871, Zachary L. Largey Mar 2006

The Rhetoric Of Persecution: Mormon Crisis Rhetoric From 1838-1871, Zachary L. Largey

Theses and Dissertations

This study is an attempt to (1) minimize the lack of rhetorical scholarship in Mormon studies, and (2) add to the historical study of rhetoric in nineteenth-century America. Since the Mormon Church's establishment in 1830, sermons have been a vital part of the Church's development into a worldwide institution. From the simple testimonial to the more complex doctrinal explication, early Mormon leaders used the art of preaching to spread their message of God and His glories. But rarely have historians or critics focused on the rhetoric—the persuasive techniques—of these sermons. This, perhaps, stems from early Mormonism's general aversion to the …
