Hsieh Liang-tso is the first volume to explore Chinese traditions in the Academy Series sponsored by Oxford and the American Academy of Religion. Most previous titles in the series focus on Christianity, which perhaps explains Selover’s attention to the perspectives of comparative religions and comparative theology in his introduction. There he briefly traces the history of the issues concerning the religious dimensions of the Chinese literati tradition and outlines a comparative framework for approaching eleventh-century Chinese thought. Inspired by Robert Neville’s Beyond the Masks of God, Selover focuses in the introduction on four themes—scripture, tradition, reason, and experience. This framework, …

Issues: We present key aspects of our paper, commissioned by UNAIDS in 2005, entitled, “Revisiting the ethics of HIV prevention research in developing countries.” In 2004 and 2005 we witnessed the closure or suspension of three international clinical trials testing tenofovir in the prevention of HIV infection in high risk groups due to the failure to provide free treatment to those who seroconvert during the conduct of the study. This study examined traditional reading instruction and concept mapping reading instruction using reading and survey data collected from English as Foreign Language (EFL) students in China. Its purpose was to investigate whether there was any difference between these instructional types in three reading areas: main idea reading, subordinate idea reading and reading between the lines. Forty first-year students were randomly chosen from two universities in Southwestern China. They were equally divided into the two instructional methods. Geoffrey Chaucer's interest in social interactions in The Canterbury Tales is easy to see through his pilgrims' estate-based conflicts with each other. In addition to the frame narrative, the interest in social interaction is also apparent in the characters of the individual tales and as a reflection of the conflict between the individual pilgrims. Most of these social interactions embody what is called the camivalesque: free, open, contact between people due to the suspension of social hierarchies. Self-expansion theory (Aron & Aron, 1986) posits that individuals enter and maintain relationships in order to expand their sense of self and suggests that expanding the sense of self is a basic human motivation. In this study, I examined whether the perceived opportunities for self-expansion within a relationship predicted feelings of closeness and passion for a partner, and unlike many previous studies, I explored the importance of self-expansion in friendships as well as romantic relationships. I also explored individual differences in the importance of self-expansion opportunities in predicting closeness and passion. The results suggest that opportunities for self-expansion may motivate …

This thesis examines the events leading up to the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran and the role of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in bringing about that revolution. It attempts to demonstrate the social, psychological, political, and religious factors that led to the rise of Khomeini as the leader of the revolution. It furthermore focuses on Khomeini's strategy to oppose, destabilize, and eventually overthrow the Shah of Iran through various means. This thesis is limited to the study of Khomeini as a revolutionary figure, not as a head of state, and therefore I do not examine Khomeini after the overthrow of the …

This paper uses a sociological stress process model to explore the Khmer adult refugees’ experience in Massachusetts. The analysis is based on the responses of three focus groups in the Khmer communities of Lowell, Lynn, and Revere, Massachusetts. The focus groups provided an in-depth understanding of sources of stress, stress mediators, and psychosocial adjustment/adaptational patterns for Khmer refugees who had experienced the Cambodian genocide. Symptoms and reactions associated with underlying causes of mental health problems had culturally specific relevance to physical illness and mental health.

It came outfighting! is an analysis of the factors that contributed to Cadillac Motor Car Division's ascension to sales leadership in the fine car field in the years following World War II. To do this, I utilized period General Motors publications and period business publications, as well as the works of modern automotive historian. 111 Factors in play during the pre-war years, such as mechanical and styling innovations, advertising concepts, and the redefinition of the luxury car genre were considered. This thesis examines structure in Shakespeare to show how his plays Romeo and Juliet and As You Like It intertextually relate to the Bible in such a way that allows them to elicit order. Shakespeare's plays contain dramatic structure, imagery, themes, and character relationships influenced by the New Testament. In order to understand how Christian elements find their way into texts, the first chapter demonstrates the function of intertextuality, how plots and words evoke others, and how Shakespeare frequently borrows from many sources. This fact sheet presents various economic, social, and demographic indicators pertaining to the Latino population in the Boston Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area (PMSA) and, when required, compares the Boston PMSA with the state of Massachusetts overall and with the other main areas of large Latino concentration, namely, the Lawrence and Worcester PMSAs and the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).1 In this fact sheet the term “Boston” refers to the complete PMSA and not just the city of Boston. The information for this fact sheet comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey of 2004.

Research on health disparities affecting people of color typically focuses on their health status, health treatment and health outcomes with a particular emphasis on the relatively high rates of morbidity and mortality from selected diseases for ethnic and racial minority groups. This fact sheet offers a different but related focus on gender and race/ethnicity in the health care workforce. Our rationale is that the Sullivan Commission on Diversity in the Healthcare Workforce concluded that the lack of minority doctors, nurses and dentists is a significant cause of racial/ethnic health disparities and that the ability to recruit, train and retain minority …

The purpose of this study is to reveal Federico Gonzalez Garza as a foremost figure of the Mexican Revolution. Chapter I examines the circumstances that gave form to Federico's ideology. Chapters II and III, analyze Federico's transcendental role during the 1910's presidential elections, and his involvement during the consequent revolution. Chapters IV and V analyze the challenges Federico encountered to transform a revolution into a government. Chapter VI reviews Federico's contribution to the insurgency against Victoriano Huerta and Venustiano Carranza. Western expansion into Iran during the latter half of the nineteenth century had a significant impact on the country's social, economic, and political development. By the turn of the century, Western ideas of constitutionalism and social democracy had infiltrated Persian society, which set the foundation for modern revolutionary movements to emerge and challenge the traditional social and political order of Persian society. This paper examines literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin's assertion that Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a polyphonic novelist and examines the importance of the literary double in a polyphonic novel. Specifically, the paper deals with the traditional theories regarding the female double in 3 of his major works: The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov, and Crime and Punishment .

Ultimately, the paper concludes that Dostoyevsky's female doubles defy and refute the stereotypical representations of the female double as Femme Fatale or Fair Maiden through his portrayal s of complex and realistic women.

In this article, I propose a new reading of Heart of a Dog, one that takes seriously Professor Preobrazhenskii's claim that his real interest is "eugenics, the improvement of the human species." The Professor's eugenics project is not limited to a cosmetic, physical improvement of human subjects; it anticipates urging humankind toward a higher stage of intellectual and spiritual development as well. Democratic government is still comparatively young in South Korea. This paper outlines the development of the constitutional and political structures since 1948, noting in particular the complex history of political parties, which are often closely tied to prominent politicians. The paper then reviews the current political situation under the Roh Moo Hyun administration and examines the broad array of presidential candidates hoping to succeed him. Crucial to an understanding of modern Korean politics has been the conflict between the industrialization generation and the democratization generation, which is still relevant today.
