Risk In Emergency Research Using A Waiver Of/Exception From Consent: Implications Of A Structured Approach For Institutional Review Board Review, Andrew Mcrae, Stacy Ackroyd-Stolarz, Charles Weijer

Charles Weijer

OBJECTIVE: To apply component analysis, a structured approach to the ethical analysis of risks and potential benefits in research, to published emergency research using a waiver of/exception from informed consent. The hypothesis was that component analysis could be used with a high degree of interrater reliability, and that the vast majority of emergency research would comply with a minimal-risk threshold.

METHODS: A Medline search and manual search were done to identify studies using a waiver of/exception from informed consent published between July 1996 and December 2000. A review panel of physicians and bioethicists independently classified nontherapeutic procedures in each study …

Naskah Dan Rekonstruksi Sejarah Lokal Islam; Contoh Kasus Dari Minangkabau, Oman Fathurahman Oct 2005

Naskah Dan Rekonstruksi Sejarah Lokal Islam; Contoh Kasus Dari Minangkabau, Oman Fathurahman

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Manuscripts are not supposed to be something unknown to the public and possessed by limited circle of people. Manuscripts are cultural heritage of a nation the content of which reflects the ideas, knowledge, tradition, and the patterns of behavior of the past society. As such they can be of use to different segments of society. This paper discusses the benefits of manuscripts to the efforts of reconstructing Islamic intellectual history in Indonesia by studying the case of local manuscripts in the Minang region. These manuscripts are not only the products of a writing tradition that had developed strongly in the …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Cave pictures are one form of human culture found in old sites of dwelling caves of the pre-historical time. Cave pictures can be said to be universal in nature because they are found almost every where in the world, including Indonesia. One form or object of picture frequently found is hand stencils. In Indonesia, beside Kalimantan, the Moluccas, and Irian, it is also found in South Sulawesi, especially in the District of Pangkajene Islands (Pangkep). Twelve caves in Pangkep are studied where 326 hand stencils are found. The hand part, orientation, hand side, number of fingers, size, color, and context …

Kutukan Dan Berkah Dalam Cerita Jawa Kuna; Sebuah Refleksi Sikap Arogan Para Pemilik Kekuasaan, Dwi Woro Retno

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Old Javanese tales like Adiparwa and Sudamala are full of elements of curse cast by a man or a god. The curses take the form of words uttered full of emotion and anger to the addressee. Curses may result in a physical transformation or a change in the fate of the person cursed. A curse cast by a god demonstrates the power. A curse, however, eventually produces blessing. Curse and blessing are two things that are different from and opposite to one another.

Tradisi Lisan, Naskah, Dan Sejarah; Sebuah Catatan Politik Kebudayaan, I Nengah Duija Oct 2005

Tradisi Lisan, Naskah, Dan Sejarah; Sebuah Catatan Politik Kebudayaan, I Nengah Duija

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Tradition can be seen from two different perspectives, those of literacy (writing system) and of oral tradition. Recently, some intellectuals have shown interest in oral tradition as academic study in some universities. Oral tradition is not supposed to be seen merely as part of the past and a cultural entity of no importance. This paper describes the two traditions of oral literature and manuscript writing as a basis for local historical knowledge and records of cultural politics. The discussion will be more about the content of tradition that is related to the history of cultural politics than a historical observation.

Aspek Logis Dalam Pernyataan-Pernyataan Politik, Y. P. Hayon Oct 2005

Aspek Logis Dalam Pernyataan-Pernyataan Politik, Y. P. Hayon

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Each political formula in the form of a statement (argument) always has a direct interconnected political purpose relative to an important group. This importance factor becomes basic consideration in the formulation of a political statement in such a manner that it can influence public emotion and feeling producing desired agreement and response from the public. Because a wide segment of society becomes special target, with their different levels of education and understanding, the logical aspects are considered unimportant and subject to elimination. The important thing is how to encourage public emotion and encourage the public to response according to what …

Kepustakawanan Dalam "The Name Of The Rose" Karya Umberto Eco, Laksmi Laksmi

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Name of the Rose, a detective novel, is set by some issues on librarianship during the Middle Age in Europe. By using discourse analysis approach, I try to know how far the concept of the librarianship was understood at that time-in the novel-based on the understanding of some concepts, starting from "library", "development system", "collection handling", which includes "classification", "censorship system" and "librarians' professionalism", until some matters on borrowing and using collection. Besides, this analysis is aimed at identifying cultural values related to the librarianship. The conclusion shows that the librarianship has an important role in providing suspense elements …

Nusantara Dalam Era Niaga Sebelum Abad Ke-19, Mohammad Iskandar Oct 2005

Nusantara Dalam Era Niaga Sebelum Abad Ke-19, Mohammad Iskandar

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Trading activities in the Nusantara archipelago had developed into an international trade. According to Ricklef, Europe was not the most developed region in the world. The developing world at the time was in fact the Islamic world, stretching from the Middle East to the Nusantara. If we trace it further back into the past, to the pre-Islamic age, trade in the Nusantara region had developed, espcially during the golden eras of Sriwijaya and Majapahit. This paper describes the economic and trade development in the Nusantara before the 19th century.

Reducing Pollutants In Industrial Stormwater Runoff: Improved Water Quality Protection Using Prioritized Facility Regulation, Lindsay M. Griffen Oct 2005

Reducing Pollutants In Industrial Stormwater Runoff: Improved Water Quality Protection Using Prioritized Facility Regulation, Lindsay M. Griffen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Stormwater pollutants originating from industrial facilities can lead to degraded water quality, even in residentially dominated regions of the country. The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit program regulates stormwater pollutants generated at industrial sites using Multi-Sector General Permits (Generic permits) for industrial facilities and a permit requirement for Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) operators. All industrial facilities within 11 broad categories of industry are responsible for self-identifying the need to comply with the Generic permit, and subsequently, implementing self-selected pollution prevention strategies. MS4 operators are required to identify and inspect “high risk” industrial and commercial facilities that may …

Bulk Silicon Based Temperature Sensor, Bharath Bethala Kishanlal Premchand Oct 2005

Bulk Silicon Based Temperature Sensor, Bharath Bethala Kishanlal Premchand

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A bulk silicon temperature sensor is fabricated in this work. The objective is to develop a low-cost high resolution temperature sensor. The target applications are a Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) sensor for oceanic applications and a magnetocaloric microcooler.

The properties of silicon are modified by thermal diffusion of gold. Gold is a fast diffuser in silicon and its diffusion contributes to the increase in resistivity of silicon. The addition of gold to n-type silicon creates a negative temperature coefficient device. The effect of the diffusing environment was investigated by diffusing in oxygen and nitrogen ambient at various temperatures. The influence of area …

Exploring The Role Of Social Support In Heterosexual Women’S Use And Receipt Of Non-Lethal Intimate Partner Violence, Kathryn A. Branch Oct 2005

Exploring The Role Of Social Support In Heterosexual Women’S Use And Receipt Of Non-Lethal Intimate Partner Violence, Kathryn A. Branch

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The concept of social support has been found to be a protective factor in women's intimate partner violence victimization. However, little is known about the relationship between women's social support and their intimate partner violence perpetration. Research evidence demonstrates that women's perpetration of violence is surprisingly frequent, particularly in women younger than age 30. This study investigated the role of social support in heterosexual women's use and receipt of non-lethal aggression against an intimate partner among 673 female college students. The implications of these findings for research and practice are discussed.
