Religious Tolerance In Sixteenth-Century Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion
Swiss American Historical Society Review
People do not generally associate the sixteenth century in Europe with religious tolerance and such an attitude is understandable, but it overlooks the small but relatively tolerant country of Switzerland. Elsewhere in Europe there was then, in fact, a great deal of religious intolerance and persecution. A few examples will illustrate very nicely how intolerant other European countries were at that time toward other religions.

The nature of Christianity is found within Christ’s resurrection. In order to portray the depth and mystery of this resurrection, Eastern and Western Christianity has focused and focuses still on differing events. The Western Church emphasizes the enormous importance of the crucifixion of Christ in line with the central theme of “justification.” The Eastern Church tends to lift up “participation with God” as a central theme in the theology and life of the Christian. In this paper, the canons of science which are crucial for positivistic, empirical research and constructivist/naturalistic research will be identified, described, compared and discussed. Although there are common canons which are often used in papers throughout literature, it would be beneficial to set a common ground for the identification and use of the canons. The canons used in positivistic research will differ from the canons used in constructivist/ naturalistic research. This paper will analyze major publications (papers, books, etc.) exploring the canons either directly or indirectly, and will provide a link between major characteristics of two different research philosophies and …

Review Of Social Stories: The Magazine Novel In Nineteenth-Century America And Blue Pencils And Hidden Hands: Women Editing Periodicals, 1830–1910, Melissa J. Homestead

Patricia Okker’s study of serialized novels nineteenth-century American magazines is elegantly conceived and executed. Beginning her chronological case studies with the serialization of Jeremy Belknap’s The Foresters (1787) in the Columbian Magazine, Okker takes as her central analytic framework the relationship between parts and whole, considering both the relationship of parts of magazine novels to the whole magazine in which they appear and the connection of individuals to the whole collectivity of American nationalism(s). The Columbian Magazine, for instance, published the U.S. Constitution alongside an installment of The Foresters, and in his novel, Belknap sought to demonstrate …

The Publishing History Of Augusta Jane Evans's Confederate Novel Macaria: Unwriting Some Lost Cause Myths, Melissa J. Homestead

In his 1884 Memoir Fifty Years among Authors, Books and Publishers, New York publisher J. C. Derby, who had published Augusta Jane Evans's second novel, Beulah, in 1859, gives an account of the publishing history of Evans's third novel, Macaria. Both the facts he recounts and his interpretation of those facts have been taken as largely accurate, appearing repeatedly in scholarly analyses of Evans's life and works. This essay argues that Derby's account is a romanticized, factually inaccurate account of wartime events from a post- Reconstruction perspective.

Everyday Antiracism: Competence And Religion In The Cultural Repertoire Of The African American Elite, Michèle Lamont, Crystal M. Fleming

This exploratory study makes a contribution to the literature on antiracism by unpacking the cultural categories through which everyday antiracism is experienced and practiced by extraordinarily successful African Americans. Using a phenomenological approach, we focus on processes of classification to analyze the criteria that members of the African American elite mobilize to compare racial groups and establish their equality. We first summarize results from earlier work on the antiracist strategies of White and African American workers. Second, drawing upon in-depth interviews with members of the Black elite, we show that demonstrating intelligence and competence, and gaining knowledge, are particularly valued …

September 11 changed the United States’ understanding of terrorism. Prior to these attacks, Americans typically viewed terrorist events and actors through the lens of foreign affairs, quite removed from “everyday” concerns. Terrorist events involving Americans did occur, occasionally on American soil, but a sense of American invulnerability never truly wavered. September 11 challenged this presumption; as well as perspectives on the history of terrorism, compelling some to reexamine past events in order to find portents of the future tragedy.
