Landscape And Memory: Al-Nabulsi's Ta'rikh Al-Fayyum, James G. Keenan

Uthman b. Ibrahim al-Nabulsi composed his description of Egypt's Fayyum province in the 1240s A.D. His Ta'rikh al-Fayyum starts with nine summary chapters followed by a massive tenth chapter, a geographical gazetteer arranged alphabetically by villages. The text is predominately concerned with the author's present day, leaving no doubt the region's landscape had changed significantly since late antiquity. Almost all the village names were Arabic. The people had been Arabized—and Islamicized: only small Christian pockets remained. The sacred landscape had been correspondingly reconfigured. The purpose of my 2005 STRT project was to begin work on a bilingual (Spanish-English) collection of the poetry of Hazel Hall (1886-1924)--one of the most important women writers of Oregon. The research will involve translating her best known book of poems, Curtains, into Spanish, as well as archival work to retrieve poems that were published only in periodicals, along with data that will contribute to the accompanying biography.

甲午戰爭距今一百一十一年，即使這場歷史對我們帶來多麼慘痛大家也會因時間久遠而被遺亡。但實際上歷史並沒有消失，只是我們忘記了歷史的教訓而已。為了正視歷史，因而決定「自揭瘡疤」，希望可以從失敗中學習，不再犯上同樣的錯誤。

甲午戰爭是中國人的慘痛經歷，而黃海海戰是其中的關鍵戰役；同時，黃海海戰的失利和滿清政府多番戰敗的最根本原因是一樣的。但至於每場戰敗的直接原因則每每不同。所以本文第一章將會探討北洋艦隊失利的直接原因。

前人多認為黃海海戰失利與北洋艦隊所採用的陣法有密不可分的關係，所以在第二章中會對中日軍方所用的兩種陣法進行分析和較。

不少學者論述黃海海戰時出現分歧或矛盾的情況，本文將會在第三章中嘗試考證這些陣法問題。

誠然，前人不乏對黃海海戰的研究，但深感學者較少提及陣法對黃海海戰的影響，故試以另類角度出發，翼能帶出不同的思考和研究方向。

有一次乘搭西鐵途中，坐在對面有一個大約三、四歲的小女孩，拿著一塊小鏡子，模仿著以上對白︰「魔鏡魔鏡，世界上誰最漂亮﹖」，我看著這個情景覺得很眼熟，會否我小時候也曾這樣做過呢﹖這當然已不可稽考，但這一句話相信無人不識，它出自家喻戶曉的童話故事〈白雪公主〉，可能我們會忘記七個小矮人的名字，但邪惡後母的說話，長大了的我們卻仍然深深印在腦海中。本故事要研究的不是後母(女性)的愛美心態，而是圖畫書中那面鏡子。

在決定以「鏡子」為題材之前，我特意搜尋一些有關鏡子的書，其中一本名為《鏡子的魔術》，我看完了，我覺得這本書挺有趣，它介紹了鏡子起源、歷史、發展等等的資料，但是我知道我的功力不足以寫一個有關鏡子的歷史故事，後來我靈機一動，我想魔鏡之所以為魔鏡，是因為它和人是很接近的，因為我們將鏡視為「魔」，是因為我們將自己劃為「人」，與鏡子作了人魔之分，加上我在書中讀到「鏡子詞源」，知道中西方都不約而同將鏡子視為觀察自我、認清自我的工具，這都顯示了鏡子與人類有著密不可分的關係。

由此我便想到，鏡子既能幫助人們認識真我，那麼它可以謂是最清醒的了。如果一面鏡子真的有生命，被賦予過百歲壽命的話，它將會看破紅塵中的多少事﹖本故事其中一條線，便是以「鏡」e714342 作敘述者，以其角度所看到的生活小事， 側寫一對夫婦的生離，同時亦借「鏡」對之前一位女住客的回憶，埋下另一主線的伏筆。在這條故事線中，多寫男女（夫婦）的對話、相處情況，藉此顯示鏡子的客觀、疏離的位置。

本小說既名為〈鏡魂〉，除了「鏡」部份以外，當然亦有另一主線「魂」。此線以一個女作家阿喜作敘述者，寫一對夫婦的死別，是女子對丈夫思念成狂的故事。女作家迷信丈夫的魂魄被魔鏡攝去，但事實上丈夫逝世的影子在她身邊陰魂不散。就算她搬了家，打碎了定情鏡子，她仍然以為丈夫會死而復生，仍然和她一起生活，逐漸將子虛烏有的東西，甚至把自己也當作是死去的丈夫。在這條故事線中，夢境和回憶穿插其中，突顯女主角的紊亂情緒。

〈鏡魂〉這個名稱既可代表「鏡」部份，也可作為「魂」部份的概括。於「鏡」部份而言，鏡魂便是主角，即敘述者的名字；於「魂」部份來說，鏡魂是鏡 中攝去之鬼魂，是她的丈夫，故事一直發展下去，鏡魂後來成了一種象徵，由丈夫（實質之「魂」）成了阿喜自己（陰「魂」不散的心理）。

兩條主線以交叉方式發展，每一章節均與浴室的鏡子緊扣，希望能突出小說的題旨。若要將兩條主線再重新拼合，亦可視作兩個獨立的故事閱讀。

《我跟他跟他》這部小說，是個人的一項很突破的嘗試﹕要表達一個長篇的故事；要寫個人的故事；要寫角色的心理；要交排人物的關係等，都是殊不容易的事。就篇幅而言，雖說是零散的結構，但卻要勾勒出內在的某些連繫。既要寫得深刻，又怕離了方向。要寫一個長篇的故事，真是一項不容易的挑戰。以往我寫過散文、短篇小說等，今次嘗試一個較詳細、較細緻的整體故事，透過故事去舖展三代人的關係發展，又要建立起分別的個性，對寫作來說，是一件需要努力兼顧的事。就寫法而言，嘗試了三人共時描寫，不同的句法等。在描寫角度上， 都有略欠火候的地方。如在人物的語氣、行為、對白等，都有突兀點情況。

起初，我計劃的結構是以片段模式展示爺、父、孫三代的關係感情。定稿亦 算維持了這個模式，但不是構思時計劃般零碎。最初的想法是寫約十個獨立的片段，去交代其中三人交錯的情感。但後來想到，在一些共同的、且有聯繫的感情表達上，完全片段很難獨善其身。再者，人之所以有感情，絕非是單獨產生出來， 因此，在寫作期間，就在故事「個別片段」的獨立性之餘，增加了其中片段之間 的內在聯繫。寫出來後，我發現對一些感覺、感情的強調都有很好的作用。而且，故事中三主角，爺、父、子於共同感情連繫外，尚有爺對父、爺對子等等等等不同的感情表達，而將片段間保留聯繫的線索，對舖排其中不同主觀的、不同組合的感情方面，都有更明顯的效果。而片段取材，亦由原來的十個，歸納為六、七個，目的是要將感情濃化。

至於人物方面，小說是以爺、父、孫三男性作主線的。原本構思想在三個故事重心人物以外，安排三個女角，與爺、父、孫關係密切的嫲、媽、子的女友等三個人物的角度去刻劃三位男主角。但結果在寫作過程中，發覺很難兼顧六個人物的相亙關係。況且，三位男角的「對手戲」，已能表現一定程度的構想，若仍刻意安排三女角的「戲份」，反顯得很累贅，於是最終是加重三主角的戲，減了、或刪去三女角。在描寫過程中，卻加插了一些女性角色的特殊場面，如產子、出嫁。在寫作中，發覺透過這些女性角色參與的故事，去寫三主角的感情，比之利用故事去帶出三女角角度的三個重心，免了不少迂迴的筆墨。

我在最初時，為了帶出一些具「電影感」的角色，試圖於人物之間的對白下一番功夫。在實驗過程中，發現自己於處理不同輩份的角色對白時，描寫得較為生硬。往往出現對白、甚至行為與身份不符的情況出現。經梁教授指導下，已在部分內容修改對話的語氣、用詞等。其餘的章節，就減少了對白，改而以簡單的文字表達，或多以第一身切換直接表達感受。

嘗試創作這篇小說，主要是受電影的啟發，我初看《21 克——生命可以有多重？》(21 Grams)時，想到這是一部很吸引、很成功的電影，利用不停切換的鏡頭，用緊湊的故事去營造一個急促的節奏。偏偏故事的主題，就是極端的生與死。梁教授介紹的《人生交叉剔》(Magnolia)亦提供了很好的參考，將九個處於生命中重要關口的人穿插在一起，對於我描寫時有很大的幫助。最重要的是，故事中描寫的生命，可以有不同方面的態度﹕在面對生命一些重要的時刻，情感的表達可以是截然不同。但我是放棄了以上兩套電影較為零碎的表達方法，因我發現在結構上、組織上很難十分零散處理題材，於是我就採取了近似《十二夜》的片段模式，去舖寫以三個人為主各自的又共通的情感。然而，其中一些寫法亦嘗試以一些較散的敘事者切換，去帶出個別的情感和角度。在面對一個患上絕症的 人，病患者自身、兒子、孫子的態度，可以是如何內歛、如何被動？將關係放在不同的情況，不同的特殊情況下去表現，得到的既有個別的和瞬間的感覺。

接下來就介紹我小說的故事。故事是以爺、父、子三代為軸心，去舖寫安排情節。我是以寫事件為主的，但我嘗試寫出感覺，整篇小說都是以感覺的表達為主。感覺可以是孫對爺，可以是子對父，可以是爺對孫，可以是‥‥‥不同的相對，而且，更有其他角色的感覺，可以是看圍觀爺的人，亦可以是圍觀正在看爺的孫等。目的是以感覺去安排三角間情感的變化，三角的共同話題，到後期發現爺患病，其中的情感變化，態度轉變，就由三人的直接感受去展開故事。寫男性間含蓄的感情，用雙重、甚至三重第一人稱是我其中一個主要試驗。

這是一篇實驗性的小說，對我來說，小說有很多我的「第一次」。經過不同的嘗試後，我發覺自己對寫作有了更深的認識，以及前所未見的視野。對處理長篇時，要處理角色間的關係，要安排能帶出感情的場面，要在整件事中找尋最好的切入點，要表達有內涵的感情等，都是以前創作所未想到的。我發現寫作長篇時要在結構、人物、情節的安排描寫，落筆開始要找一個平衡的位置。最大的發現是，個人的感覺表達與文字間的轉述有千絲萬縷的關係，文字控制情感，還是對換，是一件不易掌握的事。如何將情感透過適當的文字表現出來，會是一個必須找到答案的問題。獨立的故事，可以拆開來看，彼此間又有某些連繫，就構成了這篇小說。

我的創作經驗尚淺，在創作過程中，往往一個題材，寫到一半就停滯不前， 擱置了好一段時期，才能再發動。又或者一個題材中，有太多想表達的事，最後又發覺事件間有部分重複、矛盾。我學會了在寫作期間，要在腦子裏素描出一個大概的模樣，落筆時不斷推展故事的不同發展性，才能得到較集中、有重心的故事。

In recent years, loanword phonology has attracted continuously growing attention as an area able to shed additional light on universal phonological patterns. The contexts and processes of loanword adaptation present a dy namic interaction between two distinct systems allowing for different theo retical interpretations (Paradis, 1996). Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky, 1993) has been suggested as a possible framework to analyze these processes (Yip, 1993; Katayama, 1998; Jacobs and Gussenhoven, 2000).
