The central problems of political philosophy (e.g., legitimate authority, distributive justice) mirror the central problems of business ethics. The question naturally arises: should political theories be applied to problems in business ethics? If a version of egalitarianism is the correct theory of justice for states, for example, does it follow that it is the correct theory of justice for businesses? If states should be democratically governed by their citizens, should businesses be democratically managed by their employees? In 2001 I became, as far as I can tell, the first person hired at a Catholic university specifically because of my work in LGBTQ studies. I am blessed, as it were, with a departmental colleague who publishes widely in postcolonial queer studies, a colleague in another department who teaches queer U.S. history every two years, and many supportive friends on the faculty. Still, I am the most public face of LGBTQ studies on campus, and if a new queer studies course is added to the curriculum, I am likely to be the one who develops it. Over the years …

When Israel Charny edited ABC-CLIO’s 2-volume, 720-page Encyclopedia of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity in 1999, it was not clear that such an extensive work was needed by the field, or that it would be welcome. Although admirable in containing contributions from about 100 contributors and forewords by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Simon Wiesenthal, the two-volume set was a little too detailed at times and was somewhat cumbersome to use. Now, in its third printing, the work has found both its place and its stride. Despite its flaws, the encyclopedia fills avoid and is appreciated by scholars in the field.

In short, altruistic behavior is voluntary, unrewarded helping of another, with heroic altruism including a high degree of risk or self-sacrifice. Do Unto Others tells us that altruism begins in infancy as an innate predisposition and is nurtured in a healthy relationship with one’s parents. The concentric influences of peers, school, community, and society reinforce and expand the young person’s altruistic qualities, which can then become internalized “normocentric” values. Children’s Literature of the Harlem Renaissance is a timely addition to schol-arship on both African American literature and children’s literatureof the early twentieth century. The scope of Katharine Capshaw Smith’swork makes it a particularly welcome follow-up to DonnaRaeMacCann’s award-winning White Supremacy in Children’s Literature(Routledge 1998), which focused on the relationship of African Ameri-can children to mainstream children’s literature from 1830 to 1900.Dr. Smith moves us to the next stage, focusing on the emergence ofan African American children’s literature in the first half of the twen-tieth century. This paper explores the effects of Internet technology on the occupational culture and work practices of Irish journalists. There is a common view that the Internet, as an alternative source for news is challenging professional journalists. Increasingly amateurs may produce and disseminate stories to a potentially global readership. This paper presents results from a qualitative pilot study exploring Irish journalist’s reactions to this perceived threat. It reveals that the economic, social and legal features of the Irish journalistic field greatly mitigate any potential threat from the Internet. Lord Alfred Tennyson, composer of beautifully melodic verse during the Victorian Age, used meter to create for the reader a musical milieu. In his 1854 poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade," Tennyson uses dactylic meter (stressed syllable followed by two unstressed syllables) to slip the reader into a hypnotic state and to convey to the reader the futility of the charge.

What does it mean for engineers to engage in global problem solving? What forms of knowledge or sets of capabilities characterize the effective global problem solver? What sorts of learning experiences are involved in gaining such knowledge and capabilities? The purpose of this paper is to present the design, initial steps, and preliminary assessment of the “Engineering Cultures: Building the Global Engineer” project which seeks to address the above questions through the development of a new undergraduate course called “Engineering Cultures.” The first section of this paper briefly outlines ongoing efforts to internationalize engineering curricula, followed by a discussion of …
