Service Of Lament, Calvin Institute Of Christian Worship Jan 2005

Service Of Lament, Calvin Institute Of Christian Worship

Symposium on Worship Archive

A handout accompanying a service of lament based on Psalms 42 and 43, focused on orientation, disorientation, and reorientation.

Our four plenary worship services this year are based on Psalms, each reflecting a different dimension of prayer. Each service is stylistically quite distinct, yet each includes many common elements. Though many participants may be prompted to prepare a series of services, sermons, or worship committee devotionals based on these four services, our primary goal is not to offer model services for analysis or replication. Rather, we pray that these services will be a source of biblically grounded encouragement, challenge, nourishment, …

"To Oblige My Brethren": The Reformed Funeral Sermons Of Johann Brandmüller, Amy Nelson Burnett Jan 2005

"To Oblige My Brethren": The Reformed Funeral Sermons Of Johann Brandmüller, Amy Nelson Burnett

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Sixteenth century Lutheran funeral sermons were intended for both clerical and popular audiences and sought to instruct and console the grieving. Unlike the Lutherans, the Reformed rejected most funeral ceremonial, including the preaching of funeral sermons. The collection of funeral sermons by the Reformed pastor Johann Brandmüller is unique in applying the Reformed style of published sermons, intended primarily as a theological resource for pastors, to a distinctively Lutheran genre. Brandmuller's Funeral Sermons (1572) was a theological compendium devoted to scripture passages deemed appropriate for funerals. The 380 sermons covered topics that could be preached at the funerals of people from …

Sport And War Don't Mix, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2005

Sport And War Don't Mix, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Army-Navy football game this year opened when the President of the United States tossed a coin brought in from Fallujah for the ceremony. Much to my surprise there was little comment on the coin, or the story of what led to it being chosen for such an honor. Clearly what we have here is another mixing of the idols of war and the idols of the playing field, a potent mix in many quarters. Teddy Roosevelt found football appealing as a candidate to serve as James' "Moral Equivalent of War," as have many others over the past century. He …

Brothers In Song, Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus Jan 2005

Brothers In Song, Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus

Programs

Most of us have stored some favorite songs in our memory banks. We have associated certain words of songs with particular moments in our lives: romances, tragedies, departures, breakups, or events that we could never fully re-experience without recalling those particular songs. When we remember a song, or hear a song that transports us back to our pasts, our lives become enriched with that personal and intimate sense of continuity.

Voices From A Marginalized Population: Life Histories Of Individuals With Physical Impairments, James Peter Marsh Jan 2005

Voices From A Marginalized Population: Life Histories Of Individuals With Physical Impairments, James Peter Marsh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Individuals with physical impairments have been marginalized and discriminated against since the social identification of these individuals occurred as a sub-group within society. While much has been done to resolve prejudice against individuals with physical impairments, more needs to be done to decrease, or at least deter, discrimination and prejudice against individuals who have been marginalized. The purpose of this study is to give four individuals with physical impairments the opportunity to tell their stories. Through the telling of these stories, I believe others can identify with these individuals, and thereby, help decrease discrimination against individuals with physical impairments.

Life …
