Strange Embedded Fellows: The Socio-Narrative Radicalism Of Ann Radcliffe's Gothic Romance, E. Jordan Sellers Jr. Apr 2005

Strange Embedded Fellows: The Socio-Narrative Radicalism Of Ann Radcliffe's Gothic Romance, E. Jordan Sellers Jr.

English Theses & Dissertations

Through a close narratological analysis of Ann Radcliffe's romances, this thesis will demonstrate that the form of Radcliffe's novels is fundamentally linked to her contemporary cultural contexts. Although traditional criticism of Radcliffe rather dubiously labels her a conservative writer and regularly cites her heroines and servants as idealized and submissive stock devices, this project will demonstrate that her characters have significant subversive agency based in narrative structure, which subtly points to the radicalism of Radcliffe's politics. These conventional readings of Radcliffe's novels have too long separated the concerns of servants, women, and Radcliffe's own politics. It is only when we …

The Link Between Corporal Punishment And Teen Pregnancy, Jennifer M. Hagberg Apr 2005

The Link Between Corporal Punishment And Teen Pregnancy, Jennifer M. Hagberg

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This study explored the relationship between corporal punishment and teen pregnancy among women participating in the 2000 survey round of the NLSY Child and Young Adult Surveys. Zero order correlations were used to examine the bivariate relationship between the corporal punishment and teen pregnancy. OLS regression was used to determine if a direct relationship exists between corporal punishment and teen pregnancy after controlling for a host of variables. It was hypothesized that the more frequently a respondent received corporal punishment, the more likely she was to have reported a pregnancy during adolescence, and that this relationship would manifest itself primarily …

Hiv/Aids And Condom Usage: Factors That Contribute To African American Women's Vulnerability To Hiv Infection, Monica P. Washington Apr 2005

Hiv/Aids And Condom Usage: Factors That Contribute To African American Women's Vulnerability To Hiv Infection, Monica P. Washington

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

HIV/AIDS poses an enormous health threat to African Americans, specifically African American women. According to the Center for Disease Control "1 in 160 African American women are believed to be infected with HIV (Center for Disease Control 1999:1). In 2000, although African American women only represented 12% of the female population, they accounted for 64% of HIV cases reported among women (The White House 2000; National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases 2004).

This study examined HIV/AIDS and African American women and attempted to answer the question: Why are African American women not consistently using condoms to protect themselves against …

Bridegroom, Joseph K. Stertz Jr. Apr 2005

Bridegroom, Joseph K. Stertz Jr.

English Theses & Dissertations

The thesis contains a collection of poems, which together form an "identity piece," or more specifically, a work of identity-making or construction. The heart of the collection contains poems about the speaker's grandfather, father, an unrequited love and the speaker himself. The speaker is the "I" in the poems.

The collection includes these separate pieces in order to show their significance in the building of the speaker's identity. The thesis attempts to tell the story of the struggle between the identity given by his family (an identity received) and the new identity he seeks to make or construct for himself. …

A Collection Of Famous Last Letters, Gregory A. Schneider Apr 2005

A Collection Of Famous Last Letters, Gregory A. Schneider

English Theses & Dissertations

Reading A Collection of Famous Last Letters is similar to the experience of walking through any modem city park and discovering its dichotomous cast of characters: the inspired and the desperate; the wanting and the lacking; the about-to be's or the up-and-coming and the has-been's, the also-ran's, or worse, the never were's. In the center of this novel stands a great towering character, the biographer Culpepper who has spent the better part of his adult life memorializing the life-stories of these park-dwellers. But the biographer now demands his biography to be written- a search for the "straight line" - at …

Ultimately, these measures combine to bring healing to …

Young White Male, Seth Sawyers Apr 2005

Young White Male, Seth Sawyers

English Theses & Dissertations

Young White Male is a collection of personal essays that uses true, personal narratives combined with a narrator's exposition to explain what it means to live a life.

These essays, or short memoirs, are concerned with four broad topics: romantic relationships, family, friends, and jobs. Additionally, the opening and closing essays are concerned with why I've chosen to write and the notion of writing as a means of permanence. With the exception of the last essay, "A Cheat-Sheet Memoir," all are written from the first-person point of view, both as a necessity of form and as an indication of the …

A Comparison Of Anonymous E-Peer Review Versus Identifiable E-Peer Review On College Student Writing Performance And Learning Satisfaction, Ruiling Lu

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of anonymous e-peer review with identifiable e-peer review on student writing performance and learning satisfaction. It also investigated whether anonymous e-peer review facilitated a greater amount of critical peer feedback.

Quasi-experimental design was used to test group differences on the dependent variables. Participants were 48 freshmen enrolled in two English Composition classes at Old Dominion University in the fall semester of 2003. The two intact classes taught by the same instructor were randomly assigned to the anonymous e-peer review group and the identifiable e-peer review group.

The results showed that …

The Great Pestilence: Yellow Fever In Portsmouth, Virginia, 1855, Burden Susan Lundgren

Health Services Research Dissertations

In 1855, the town of Portsmouth, Virginia was devastated by an epidemic of yellow fever. Most citizens fled. Of those who remained, most became infected and a thousand died. The municipal government collapsed. In their place, a small organization known as the Portsmouth Relief Association assumed responsibility for ensuring the survival of the town. This organization managed the care of the sick, the burial of the dead, and the care of orphans. It was the sole agent receiving and allocating the funds and resources that poured into the community. Scarce food, drugs and other supplies were available only through the …

Escape Velocity, Mark Gatlin Apr 2005

Escape Velocity, Mark Gatlin

English Theses & Dissertations

Escape Velocity is a tale of flight with roots in a young naval aviation candidate and lost dreams, but it becomes much more. In fleeing a patterned desk job in Washington, DC, and the city's congested warren-like streets I discovered much about America, her people, and, most thoroughly, about myself. Essentially, I see the most interesting of travel writers as part rogue, part adventurer, and part minstrel and I strive to keep up this triumvirate tradition by discussing not only an adventure of sights and sounds, but also one of feel for the tangible experiences I encountered on my journey …

Strategies For Incident Management In An Urban Street Network, Vikramaditya Bhide Mar 2005

Strategies For Incident Management In An Urban Street Network, Vikramaditya Bhide

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this research the problem of incident congestion on surface street networks is addressed. Microscopic simulation is used to simulate incident scenarios on various corridors in the Tampa Bay area. The effect of the three factors, namely, network, speed and signal strategies on the traffic flow is studied. The network performance is based on Highway Capacity Manual specified measures of effectiveness prepared by the Transportation Research Board.

Three inherently different city corridors, high, medium and low volume, are used to test the strategies developed. The strategies investigated include varying speed limits during incidents and using pre-timed and semi-actuated signals that …

A Security Constrained Ac Economic Dispatch Framework For Allocation Of Balanced And Unbalanced Financial Transmission Rights, Balaji Rajan Mar 2005

A Security Constrained Ac Economic Dispatch Framework For Allocation Of Balanced And Unbalanced Financial Transmission Rights, Balaji Rajan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In a deregulated power market financial transmission rights (FTR) serve as a mechanism for protecting market participants from price variation resulting from network congestion. Possession of FTRs allows participants to recover congestion related losses resulting from unequal locational marginal prices that arise from out of merit dispatch. There exists different strategies for allocating FTR which are in use in the deregulated market. Designing a comprehensive framework for market specific FTR allocation that includes factors like unbalanced FTR, FTR for losses and AC-OPF is currently a major research issue in the deregulated power industry.

This thesis develops a method for allocation …

An Automatic Code Generation Tool For Partitioned Software In Distributed Computing, Neeta S. Singh Mar 2005

An Automatic Code Generation Tool For Partitioned Software In Distributed Computing, Neeta S. Singh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In a large class of distributed embedded systems, most of the code generation models in use today target at object-oriented applications. Distributed computing using procedural language applications is challenging because there are no compatible code generators to test the partitioned programs mapped on to the multi-processor system. In this thesis, we design a code generator to produce procedural language code for a distributed embedded system. Unpartitioned programs along with the partition primitives are converted into independently executable concrete implementations. The process consists of two steps, first translating the primitives of the unpartitioned program into equivalent code clusters, and then scheduling …

Design And Fabrication Of A Re-Configurable Micromirror Array For An Optical Microspectrometer, Vandana Upadhyay Mar 2005

Design And Fabrication Of A Re-Configurable Micromirror Array For An Optical Microspectrometer, Vandana Upadhyay

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the design and fabrication of a re-configurable micromirror array which can be used as a component of an optical microspectrometer. In an optical microspectrometer, an array of mechanically positionable micromirrors can be implemented as a reconfigurable exit slit to selectively focus particular wavelengths of a diffracted spectrum onto the detector stage. The signal to noise ratio and response time of an optical microspectrometer can be vastly improved by this technique.

In the approach presented here, a hybrid bulk- and surface- micromachining process is demonstrated for fabrication of a 1XN array of micromirrors. The reconfigurable micromirrors presented here …
