The Matamoros “Drug Cult” Murders: Borderland Perceptions And The Shaping Of Belief, Victor Gomez

Media coverage of the Matamoros “drug cult murders” highlighted the abduction and murder of twenty-one year old college student, Mark Kilroy, while enhancing negative images of Mexican people. What makes the Kilroy coverage a watershed in history is how racism played a part during and after print media coverage of the discovery at Santa Elena. Through U.S. media especially, Anglo beliefs of cultural backwardness, Mexican police corruption, and religious misrepresentation are expressed by way of stereotypes held about Mexican border people. Sexual misconduct on the part of clergy is not a new phenomenon. Nevertheless the Church in general lacks a concept of restoration that provides spiritual and emotional healing of an offender within the context of the redemptive community of faith. This dissertation is intended to demonstrate how Scripture, church history, theology and psychology support restoration of fallen clergy. The dissertation will go on then to describe what a process of restoration would include.

This study addresses the challenges related to the care giving ministry of New Lire Church located in LaPlata, Maryland. This revitalized church has grown from 60 attendees in 1999 to over 1,100 by 2004. The growth has led to many challenges, including the development of a shepherding strategy that will meet the needs of the congregation. The leadership team sought to answer the question of an appropriate shepherding strategy through examining scriptures, reviewing the history of shepherding and evaluating current models of care giving used in large Wesleyan churches. The practice of the spiritual disciplines in local Baptist churches is in decline, and there does not exist a curriculum designed to implement the disciplines into the public teaching ministry of the local church. The purpose of this project is to design, implement, and evaluate such a curriculum, with respect to participants' understanding of, motivation to practice, and perceived effectiveness in, ten key spiritual disciplines. The curriculum is evaluated by a diagnostic tool based on Bloom's Taxonomy, and is intended to measure increases in knowledge, motivation, and effectiveness.

Talking About Virtue: Paisiello’S "Nina," Paër’S "Agnese," And The Sentimental Ethos, Diane Hoeveler

This essay will examine how sentimentality and its valorization of virtue spread through one particular intersection of opera and literature; that is, the seduced maiden narrative is enacted in these operas, once as a comedy of sorts, once as a tragedy. Giovanni Paisiello's "Nina" (1789) was clearly influenced by the works of Samuel Richardson and Laurence Sterne, while Fernando Paër's "Agnese" (1809) is a direct adaptation of Amelia Opie's popular novella "The Father and Daughter" (1801). Furthermore, both of the operas spin in and out of ideological orbit with Richardson's novel Pamela; or Virtue Rewarded (1740-41), which in turn was …

The figure of Beatrice Cenci was, according to Melville, the embodiment of those “two most horrible crimes possible to civilized humanity--incest and parricide." Nevertheless, she enjoyed a curious popularity as a subject in late eighteenth and nineteenth-century Atlantic-rim literary culture. Indeed, the renewed fascination with her story indicates several important psychological as well as social themes that authors as diverse as Walpole, Shelley, Swinburne, Hawthorne, Melville, Dickens, and Wharton all attempted to delineate. Although critics have analyzed the Cenci figure in Pierre and The Marble Faun before, comparing the use of this motif in relation to the earlier British works …

Historians throughout time have had to decipher and toil between memory and history as they have reconstructed the past-laboring with the similarities between the two, as well as major differences. The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

"The Darkness Is The Whole Thing": Environment, Belief, And Community In The Wampus Legend Of The Retsof Salt Mine, Ashley Gorrell Purser

"The Darkness is the Whole Thing" is an examination of a legendary animal known as the wampus that makes its home in the Retsof salt mine. Various forms of wampus creatures found in other settings are introduced, followed by discussion of the ways in which environment influences the adaptation of occupational legend. The article considers how belief in the wampus facilitates the expression of fear, an increased sense of awareness, and the development of community in a unique and dangerous work environment. The telling of the wampus legend is considered a narrative tool for solidifying and preserving occupational identity.

Oral Histories

David Singleton was born May 5th 1935 in mid Sacramento Valley. He was a student at the University of California, Berkeley. He applied and was accepted into Princeton Theological Seminary. While at Princeton, he served as a student in multi-racial situations in East Trenton and in West Philadelphia. He was eventually placed at Sound view Presbyterian Church in the Bronx in 1963 per the recommendation of a minister he had met while serving at Richard Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Singleton met Medgar Evers and participated in the civil rights movement in Birmingham Alabama. He had a few church connections there. He …

Hermeneutics is a word that becomes popular lately especially among postmodernist people. Since the definition and the scope become broader, many groups of people can use hermeneutics nowadays. One of the application of hermeneutics is the interpretation of Al-Qur'an, the Moslems' holy bible. It is known that Moslems has their own way in interpreting their bible, with Tafsir. The focus of this paper is to convey the similarity and the difference between hermeneutics and Tafsir, and also the Moslems' opinion toward the interpreter who use hermeneutics as the frame of his interpretation.

Kajian ini ditujukan untuk menemukan pemahaman perkembangan kesadaran nasional bangsa Melayu dalam mencapai kemerdekaan bangsa Melayu. Di dalamnya dikaji muncul dan berkembangnya kelompok-kelompok intelektual baru Melayu yang memiliki daya desak di balik perkembangan pergerakan kemerdekaan Melayu. Tahun 1920-an dianggap sebagai awal perkembangan kesadaran nasional bangsa Melayu. Dalam periode itu kelompok sosial baru, yaitu kaum agamawan terdidik, intelektual terdidik Melayu, dan intelektual terdidik Inggris, muncul di luar hierarki Melayu tradisional dan mulai menampilkan cita-cita sosiopolitis yang berdampak besar pada pembentukan bangsa Malaya, yang kemudian menjadi Malaysia, hingga bergerak terus ke tahun 1948.

As a powerful medium to persuade people to buy a product or service, ads have long been used in many forms. This study attempts to understand the language use and graphic design of comic as one of the ads forms in Jakarta-based Indonesian media, particularly in the period of 1940-1960s. By employing different approaches in Linguistic Anthropology, Mass Communication and Graphic Design, the findings show a close relationship between the language and the graphic design of the ads with the society who consumed them as well as a trend towards informal language use and popular culture.
