The journals from this trip have never been published and Muir wrote no specific book from his European travels. The manuscript journals are part of the John Muir Papers within Holt-Atherton Special Collections here at Pacific. The journals are lengthy and were transcribed by Muir scholar, Linnie Marsh Wolfe, sometime in the 1940s or 1950s. They have also been microfilmed as part …

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

The article looks at the causes of large migratory movements in Haiti. Anthropologist Gérard Barthélemy suggests that emigration from the countryside stems from aspects of rural society, namely the need to accumulate wealth to start one’s own production unit and the need to chase out those who will not stick to and perpetuate the rules of the community. However, according to Jean Métellus and Jean-Claude Icart, migration movements are tightly linked to political and historical upheavals, which force people out of the country in search of safety and survival. Swiss American Historical Society Review

Published histories of New Glarus have been inconsistent in the names and numbers of original settlers. They generally peg the number at 108, 118 or even 122. The Settlers' Monument in New Glarus, erected in 1915 to commemorate those pioneers, has a listing (only the men!) that differs somewhat from written histories. A comprehensive listing based upon the primary sources of the time has never been fully enumerated or fully referenced.

Swiss American Historical Society Review

A notebook kept by one of the two men who selected the site for the Swiss colony of New Glarus in Wisconsin has been located and translated from German, providing additional insight into a unique story of Swiss immigration. While two pages from the 28-page notebook had been photographed and preserved in Switzerland years ago, the original was thought by some to be missing. However, it has been safely archived at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in Madison since 1929.

It is indeed an honor to have been given the opportunity to be guest editors for this "Searching for a New Home" edition of the esteemed Swiss American Historical Society Review. While we are both ardent students of history, we are not historians by profession but rather a scientist and a journalist - both born and raised in New Glarus, Wisconsin. Our goal is not to retell the story of New Glarus' birth 160 years ago, but to examine this beginning through three documents of that significant year.

This thesis discusses two ancient cosmologies: Genesis 1: 1-2:3 and Enuma Elish. It details the culture in which each was written by discovering the possible time periods from which each cosmology came. This thesis also seeks to understand why each narrative was written and what the author was propagating to its respective audience. Finally, the present thesis contrasts similarities and differences between the two cosmologies and explains motivations for the similarities and. differences. Réalisme Merveilleux Et Rire Macabre Contre La Zombification, Anastasil Delarose Makambo

The substance of this analysis is to use fiction, especially the novel, to observe Haiti and Black Africa some 200 years and 40 years, respectively, after independence. The contemporary novelists of these two time periods stress “zombification”, which is their common destiny. They denounce it by means of several scriptural strategies, such as magic realism and macabre laughter. The first contributes to reveal “zombifying” authorities such as houngans, wizards, politicians and their militia. The second is used to make “zombificators” ridiculous by showing how their ranting leads them to appear weak before their rebel victims.

The main argument of this study may be outlined as follows: colonized communities in the world economy being integrated by means of “historical fatality” from slavery to colonialism and neo-colonialism. The counter-movement of decolonization, as exemplified in the Haitian revolution, was meant to propose a more humane outbreak of enslaved peoples on the world scene. The account of globalization reveals that Haiti was forced into the world economy through the modality of extortion, which denied the most vulnerable members of Haitian society their basic humanity.
