Charting An Ethics Of Desire In "The Wings Of The Dove”, Phyllis E. Vanslyck

James’s characters are nothing if not willful—and ultimately alone—in their quests. Like figures from ancient Greek drama, they demand everything and give up nothing, enacting Jacques Lacan’s ethical claim that “the only thing of which one can be guilty is of having given ground relative to one’s desire.”[i] In doing so, they seem to call into question, or at least complicate, the Kantian categorical imperative and the ideal of disinterested action, offering a radical ethical alternative. James’s characters enact, I will argue, an ethic of desire.

Although Hamlin Garland made his mark primarily as a writer of innovative realistic short stories in the 1890s, he also wrote some nineteen novels, almost none of which ever attained the critical acclaim of his first collection of short stories, Main-Travelled Roads, published in 1891. The single exception is Rose of Dutcher's Coolly, his fifth novel and tenth book, published four years later. The novel traces the development of . a motherless girl from her childhood on a small farm in a Wisconsin coulee (a "coulee" or "coolly" is the French term for the deep valleys between high ridges in …

We examined the reported experiences of 12 successful female educational leaders as stories of resiliency development through overcoming or coming back from adversity. Specifically, the reported experiences of these women were examined to determine: When did adversity evidence itself in the lives of these leaders? Were any of the adversity experiences common among the women in terms of when they occurred and the contexts or settings in which they occurred? What strategies did these women use in overcoming or coming back from these adversity experiences? From the time she defied Jewish tradition to learn to read the Torah, Bella Abzug fought for equality of women in education. Until about the sixth grade when my height shot up to almost six feet, I was going to be an airline stewardess and jet set around the world. Invisibility may be one of the greatest challenges women face. One of the great flaws in the writing of U.S. history has been the omission of the role or presence of women from the written record-women are invisible. Fortunately, three women authors (i.e., Willa Cather (1873-1947), Bess Streeter Aldrich (1881-1954) and Mari Sandoz (1896-1966)) of Nebraska have chronicled settlement stories in their writings. They have preserved, through their writings, the presence, work, and contributions of women during the homesteading, pioneer, and early settlement years in Nebraska. Pipher, author of The Middle of Everywhere: Helping ReJugees Enter the American Community, has written an intensively personal narrative exploring her own consciousness as well as giving an eye-opening treatise on the immigrant experience. Although some approached this conflict with a combative spirit, patriotic zeal, or a call for isolationism, Pipher chose a personal approach culled from her first hand experience with some of these newest immigrants. Pipher did not set out to do an ethnographic study. One emerged spontaneously as she became involved in the lives of refugees, migrant workers, and other recent immigrants.

In Part I of this article, I explain the theory of Primal Leadership and Dissonant Leadership (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2002). In Part II, I enunciate the ways in which key No Child Left Behind Act provisions encourage and, in some cases, mandate that schools utilize Dissonant Leadership strategies. In Part III, I explain why the Dissonant Leadership strategies espoused by the No Child Left Behind Act undermine the purported purposes of the statute. In Part IV, I consider the ability of an education statute to mandate or encourage Primal Leadership strategies.

Despite significant increased participation opportunities for girls and women in sports following the passage of Title IX, women remain underrepresented in secondary athletic leadership roles. Thirty-eight female and 158 male high school athletic directors responded to a 19-item Athletic Director Survey (ADS) designed to elicit information on the following: position attainment factors, attainment and retention barriers, perceptions of similar or different barriers for women and men, leadership and management skills, personal sacrifices, and strengthening female candidacy for athletic directorships. Results indicate· the importance of mentoring and networking in providing women with equal access to athletic leadership positions.

The purpose of this research project is to demonstrate that the traditional analysis of Rabelais's Pantagruel has been superficial and has failed to answer or resolve the controversy over the real message of the text. Many critics have speculated that the text is anti-Christian but have failed to conclusively prove this claim. As a result, there is an opposing group of critics who have countered this position ultimately challenging that it can not be proven that the text is really anti-Christian. Focusing on nineteenth century literature in England, this paper explores the relationship of fairy tales to the realist novel. Even though the novels of the time are best known for being grounded firmly in realism, the world of fairies, existing most prominently in nineteenth-century children's literature, crept into novels and stories written for adults. The novel Jane Eyre, frequently discussed regarding its treatment of nineteenth century social issues, contains gothic and romantic elements alongside the realist mode. These elements contribute to a "transformation" of the text into a fairy tale. The novel becomes a fairy tale not in structure alone, …

In this article I explore the interplay between language and mobility. As the number of debates about mobility and belonging has grown both in the social sciences and in feminist theory, there has been an increasing discussion about the interaction between language and place and I argue here that increased mobility leads to changes in one’s understanding and experience of the languages one dwells in. My argument is that the ways in which language is reflected upon shapes the ways in which subjects experience and define their mobility and further, that when individuals reflect about language, they also reflect, in …

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay explores the treatment of female characters in Renaissance revenge tragedy: specifically in Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy and Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Revenge tragedy is a dramatic sub-genre that conventionally develops an unsettling level of audience sympathy for male characters who are, essentially, murderers. The paper shows how famous male revengers such as Kyd’s Hieronimo and Shakespeare’s Hamlet are characterised in a way that subtly resists their firm categorisation either as righteous or truly immoral figures. By contrast, it suggests, early modern culture displays a pronounced tendency to judge women only in relation to the divisive ideological dichotomy of the angel …

This essay argues that by labelling British women’s mental health distress and treatment in terms of a purely medical model, underlying contributory social structures and phenomena such as gendered roles, ethnicity and poverty, have largely been ignored by the (male dominated) psychiatric profession. This labelling is historically rooted in the pathologisation of the feminine condition; therefore, women’s mental ill health is substantially a social construct and a product of a patriarchal society. Renowned Musicologist and poet, Professor Joshua Uzoigwe, former head of the Music Department at the University of Uyo, joined the ancestors last month. Described as "a music educator, composer, performer and musicologist [and as someone who] directed several musical concerts in which he featured his own works and works by other modern Nigerian composers." It was also said that "his intention was to create an awareness of this music in an intellectual environment such as Obafemi Awolowo University and in Nigeria at large."
