Meeting Discusses Issues Surrounding Red Cross Affiliation, Melanie Morin

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

A General Student Senate resolution passed last April that encourages student organizations not to associate with the American Red Cross because of accusations of gay discrimination which have caused concern over campus blood drives. The controversy stems from a Food and Drug Administration policy originating in 1983. The policy prohibits all men who have ever had sex with any other man since 1977 from donating blood. Since this time, ·technology has reduced the risk of contracting HIV through blood donations to about one unit per two million donations, according to the Red Cross Web site.

A Re-Examination Of Graphic Design Pedagogy, And Its Application At The University Of Wollongong: Towards A Phd Study In Design Education, Grant Ellmers Sep 2005

A Re-Examination Of Graphic Design Pedagogy, And Its Application At The University Of Wollongong: Towards A Phd Study In Design Education, Grant Ellmers

Faculty of Creative Arts - Papers (Archive)

The pedagogical approach in the Graphic Design discipline at the University of Wollongong, as in other design institutions (Kvan 2001), is informed at a fundamental level by the studio-based learning framework. The ever-present challenges in the higher education sector, such as increasing student to teacher ratios and resourcing issues, lead educators to constantly evaluate their pedagogical approach. With the current advances in computer-aided design, and the emergence of alternative learning frameworks, it is timely to re-evaluate the role and effectiveness of studio-based learning in graphic design education. Problem-based learning and Schön's reflective practitioner framework have parallels with studio-based learning, however …

Muscular Forces And Joint Angles In Small-Handed Pianists: A Pilot Study On The 7/8 Size Keyboard Versus The Full Size Keyboard, Brenda Wristen, Alexis Kathleen Wismer, Myung-Chul Jung, M. Susan Hallbeck Sep 2005

Muscular Forces And Joint Angles In Small-Handed Pianists: A Pilot Study On The 7/8 Size Keyboard Versus The Full Size Keyboard, Brenda Wristen, Alexis Kathleen Wismer, Myung-Chul Jung, M. Susan Hallbeck

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Conference Presentations

This pilot study examined whether the use of a 7/8 keyboard contributed to the physical ease of small-handed pianists in comparison with the conventional piano keyboard. A secondary research question focused on the transition from one keyboard to the other. For the purposes of this study, we adopted David Steinbuhler’s postulated hand span of 8 inches or less as defining a “small-handed” pianist. The goal was to measure muscle loading and hand span during performance of the excerpt. Data collection included each participant being monitored using electromyography via surface electrodes, which were attached to the upper back/shoulder, parts of the …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The mammalogy program at Texas Tech University officially was established in 1962, when Robert L. Packard joined the faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences. As the institution's first mammalogist, Packard took the initiative to develop a strong program of mammalian research and education. Influenced by the successful program built by his mentor, E. Raymond Hall, at the University of Kansas, Packard modeled similar goals for Texas Tech University. Those goals included a strong emphasis on both undergraduate and graduate education and research, with several mammalogy faculty members, and the establishment and growth of a large and active mammal collection.

Leadership, Network Facilitation And Regional Development: Critical Reflection As A Tool For Insight???, Robbie Collins Sep 2005

Leadership, Network Facilitation And Regional Development: Critical Reflection As A Tool For Insight???, Robbie Collins

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

In his keynote address at the ANZRSAI Conference 2005, Professor Blakely challenged regional scientists to use their “ideal position to forge these [separate disciplines informing regional science] into a disciplinary understanding that operates across disciplines”. In doing so the forces at work in the myths, magic and mix of regional innovation are necessarily viewed as interdependent components. The component to be focussed upon here is leadership, especially where it assists in developing networks and “knowdes” in the web of the development of the knowledge economy. Such a critical perspective encourages a consideration of the work of practitioners in regional development …

Sialic Acid Modulation Of Cardiac Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel Gating Throughout The Developing Myocardium, Patrick J. Stocker Sep 2005

Sialic Acid Modulation Of Cardiac Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel Gating Throughout The Developing Myocardium, Patrick J. Stocker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The proper orchestration of voltage-gated ion channel gating is vital to maintaining normal heart rhythms throughout an animal's lifespan. Voltage-gated sodium channels, Nav, are responsible for the initiation of the cardiac action potential, which leads to cardiac systole. Comparison of neonatal ventricular and atrial myocyte Nav gating with adult indicated that the neonatal ventricular Nav gated following a ~10 mV greater depolarization than did atrial or adult ventricular Nav. In this study I questioned whether development- and/or chamber-dependent changes in Nav-associated functional sialic acids could account for these differences. When desialylated with …

Drug Testing In Baseball And Worldwide, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 2005

Drug Testing In Baseball And Worldwide, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The United States Congress is making noises again over the issue of drug use in sports and, as usual, taking aim at steroids in baseball. In The Clean Sports Act, sponsored by Sen. McCain and Rep. Tom Davis, there is a call for stronger penalties for drug violations in baseball. This bill would institute a two-year ban for first offenders and a lifetime ban for second offenders, a penalty system adopted from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, in sandbagging the Players' Association, also called for an independent testing agency and his coyly phrased "Three Strikes and …

Gender Stereotypes Of Citizenship Performance And Their Influence On Organizational Rewards, Lisa Wilkinson Sep 2005

Gender Stereotypes Of Citizenship Performance And Their Influence On Organizational Rewards, Lisa Wilkinson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gender differences were investigated on ratings of citizenship performance (altruistic behaviors in the workplace). Self, peer, and supervisor ratings were collected on the three dimensions of citizenship performance (personal support, organizational support, and conscientious initiative) with scale type and gender as possible moderators of citizenship performance ratings.

Two hundred and twenty-four individuals performance ratings were collected, from different companies across the United States. The majority of these participants were white and female, and the largest industry sampled was the customer service industry. Participants were asked to complete a performance rating about themselves and have their peers and supervisor evaluate their …
