Opportunities In The Broadcast News Media: A Case Study In Gender Equity, Derek R. Lumsden

When one thinks of gender equity, some people would tend to get a picture of women crusading for rights, burning their bras and men in effigy, and complaining about the unfairness of life. However, this paper deals with the silent crusade towards women's right in the broadcast news industry. It revolves around a case study done in a small Midwestern town that shows how 'liberal' ideas can be forwarded in a 'conservative' environment, especially in regards to the promotion and equity of women in the broadcast news industry.

History is written by the powerful. It is true that since the 1960s and the beginnings of the democratization of history, less powerful minorities have taken up the pen and more profusely expressed their views of history, but to a great extent, white males have engrained their view of history into people’s minds. Perhaps for this reason, perhaps because of its appealing nature, or perhaps for both reasons, the Renaissance stands out in people’s minds as a definitive period in history—a period during which, arguably, intellectual and cultural progress swept across Europe.

This collection is an artificially created collection from different donors, consisting primarily of scrapbooks, programs, and other ephemera related to Huntington High School. Ephemera includes a 1920 issue of the Tatler student newspaper, commencement programs, and materials created during various class reunions for the classes of 1921, 1928, 1929, 1937, and 1945. Scrapbooks for the class of 1921 reunions and Myrtle R. Cooke’s “The Girl Graduate’s Scrapbook” include extensive amounts of photographs and printed material related to the reunions and Huntington High School respectively. Cooke’s scrapbook also includes unrelated family materials.

This collection consists of a CD containing digital files of letters and certificates sent or owned by various members of the Bartram, Ross, and Told families. Also included are printed copies of some of the letters. Included are letters to John Tuffree about the management of the Bartram farm at Millersport, Ohio; while the Martin, Ross, and Told family letters are from various locations, including Boonesboro, Iowa, Rocky Narrows, Ohio(?), and Huntingburgh, Indiana. The CD contains folders for the Bartram, Ross, and Told family, each respectively containing 23, 20, and 23 image files.

This collection consists of correspondence, photographs, a scrapbook, clippings, and ephemera related to Marion Vest Fors' murals which were painted in the James E. Morrow Library as part of the centennial celebration of Marshall College. The murals were removed for remodeling circa 1966 and remounted in 2005. The scrapbook was created by Fors about her creation of the mural to justify its emergence from storage and reuse in the Morrow Library. Also included in the collection are paintbrushes used in the painting of the murals.

This collection consists of 57 reels of 16 mm film primarily of family activities and travels abroad dating from 1932 until 1952. Special films of note include footage of coal mines and footage of the 1937 flood in Huntington, West Virginia. Also included are an Eiki film projector, VHS and DVD copies of selected film, and oversize family and business related photographs.

This collection from the Huntington Cabell County Chapter of the American Red Cross spans the years of 1917-2002. The collection was divided into three record groups; administration, programs, and services. The majority of the administration files consist of annual reports and minutes from various committee and board meetings. The program files contain an assortment of fundraisers and campaigns, which includes the annual American Red Cross Ball 1985-2001. The service files offer a variety of information on disaster, blood, and military service to the community including information on the Canteen, which was in operation during WWI. This article is both philosophical and practical in its intent. It endeavours to bring into focus an idea with an Ancient Greek lineage, poiesis, and determine whether it may revitalize our thinking about the 'making' of art. The art-making considered in this paper will concentrate exclusively on Western art and its historical and contemporary manifestations. I suggest that poiesis - that which "pro-duces or leads (a thing) into being'" - may enable practitioners in the varying art forms, and aestheticians who reflect upon them, to come to a deeper sense of how artworks work: that they realize themselves inter-dependently …

The Heresy Of Paraphrase Revisited, Stefán Snaevarr

I try to rejuvenate Cleanth Brooks' old thesis about the 'heresy of paraphrase.' This I do by analyzing a couple of well-known poems and by performing thought experiments of the "possible world" kind. They show that paradigmatic examples of poems are not paraphrasable. A prosaic text can be improved with the aid of a paraphrase, but a typical poem cannot. The deeper explanation for the non-rephrasability of poetry is that our understanding of it is basically tacit. In this way I hope to give Brooks' original thesis a more solid foundation.

Mona Hatoum's video installation Corps étranger is an example of an artwork that critically comments on particular aspects of contemporary visual culture, such as the colonization of the body's interior by medical image technologies. It has indeed been interpreted in those terms by several authors from within the new academic field of Visual Culture. Here it is argued that the critical cultural impact of the installation might be more fully described when one grants art a relative autonomy within the cultural field and, moreover, draws on concepts from more traditional academic disciplines and approaches, such as aesthetics and phenomenology. Mount Koli in Eastern Finland is a useful example for environmental aesthetics and landscape research. In case studies, an example represents a general set and the conclusion becomes a precedent. Koli provides a wealth of material: descriptions of local nature, art featuring Koli, and documents concerning the environmental debates around it. Recently there has been a cry in Western academic and artistic circles for reclaiming the body and repositioning its locus and identity. Body theories and body art have become topics of attention as well as subjects of philosophical discussion. This article looks at the issue from a comparative perspective, focusing on representative cases in Chinese and Western portrait paintings. It first discusses Francis Bacon's works of human bodies and identifies their philosophical and psychological loci. Kinetic Synesthesia: Experiencing Dance In Multimedia Scenographies, Marc Boucher

The contrasting kinetic values between dancer and projected moving image in multimedia scenographies provide the viewer with a particular type of synaesthetic experience. It results from the interaction of kinesthesis proper to each medium, the dancing body and the moving image. The extensive use of projected moving images in performing arts is part of a cultural trend that privileges a fundamental yet little understood aspect of aesthetic experience. Kinetic synaesthesia is a transdisciplinary concept formulated in light of psychological, physiological, and phenomenological accounts of both synaesthesia and kinesthesis.
