In one of the 26 contributing essays to Finding Colonial Americas, Kevin Hayes reconstructs the reading experience of the early eighteenth-century historian Thomas Prince, who scrupulously read the Virginia texts of John Smith and consulted French historiographic as well as English and colonial American historical texts before writing his own history of New England. The essay wonderfully illustrates the dependence of this local history on a transregional and intercontinental network of texts. In 1998, the emergence of five unknown pages written by Anne Frank once again focused attention on her diary. Despite the fact that the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation had unravelled the history of Anne's diary in "The Critical Edition" (Dutch 1986, 2001; English 1989, 2003) and had printed all available texts in parallel, readers were confused. This was partly due to Mirjam Pressler’s so-called ‘Definitive Edition’ of 1995 in which the strands, that had been so carefully separated in the Critical Edition, were once again tangled. Mrs. Gordon (Rosalyn Weiser, Class of 1943) lent a scrapbook highlighting Mr. Gordon's athletic career, giving the archivist permission to make photocopies of its contents before returning it to her. The scrapbook contained a letter from Dean J. Thomas Askew inviting Gordon to take exams for a tuition scholarship because of his excellent high school grades. The archivist also made copies of newspaper clippings (The Savannah Morning News, The Inkwell, 1938 and 1939) related to Gordon's years at Armstrong on the basketball and football teams. The collection contains photocopies of his Athletic Hall of Fame plaque dated 1998, as well …

Religion - All Scholarship

Persuasion motivated the creation of many ancient Near Eastern texts. Persuasion was not limited to particular genres of discourse and literature but was frequently a stimulus leading authors to combine gemes to create more persuasive forms. In this process, the rhetorical capacities of many different kinds of liiterature were harnessed for overtly persuasive purposes. One such rhetorical strategy combined three kinds of materials-stories, lists and sanctions-to influence its audience's ideas and behaviors. It shaped the form and content of texts from a wide variety of periods and cultures in the ancient Near East and eastern Mediterranean, including the foundational scriptures …

Imagining America

George J. Sanchez, professor of History and American Studies and Ethnicity, University of Southern California, sets forth an important argument about the two pathways to democracy in U.S. higher education: first, engagement by the university through connections of faculty, staff, and students with specific communities and publics; and second, access to the university for members of all communities and publics through inclusive admissions and hiring policies. He challenges our understanding of how engagement and diversity are connected—and how, increasingly, they are becoming disconnected.

Apart from noting that the six books in the series should be considered as a whole, the editors do not explicitly discuss selection criteria.

The Levin Catalogue Of Mid-19th-Century Beads, Karlis Karklins

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The Levin Catalogue is composed of two similar collections of glass and stone beads assembled by Moses Lewin Levin, a London bead merchant whose business operated from 1830 to 1913. A total of 621 beads of 128 different varieties makes up the collections which can be dated to the period 1851-1869. Although the beads are recorded as having been used in the African trade, several have counterparts at North American sites, thereby making the catalogue a potentially valuable research tool for those involved in the study of North American trade beads as well.

This dissertation is in two parts. The first part is an original composition, "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra." The second part is an analysis of Brazilian composer Camargo Guarnieri's "Concerto No. 5 para Piano e Orquestra." I chose to analyze this work by Guarnieri because I am also a native from Brazil and I believe he is one of the most outstanding composers of the twentieth century.
