Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Susan Rosowski, Adele Hall Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, died on November 2, 2004, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Professor Rosowski was general editor of the Willa Cather Scholarly Edition, director of the Cather Project and the Cather International Seminar, and editor-in-chief of Cather Studies. She was the major force in creating and sustaining all of them. Over some twenty years, she was instrumental in securing Cather's place as a major twentieth century author. She won the University's highest awards for both teaching and scholarship, a rare achievement, and her professional life modeled …

In the years between 1890 and 1920, there was an influx of immigration to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Due to the copper mines, towns and villages, such as Red Jacket (now known as Calumet) flourished. Surrounding the mines were smaller villages, such as Ahmeek, located five miles northwest of Calumet. Among those that came for a new and “better” life were the Croatians. Most of the Croatians who made their way over were from the same area in Croatia, Ravna Gora. This immigration pattern is an example of chain-migration, people helping those from their country, from the area of the country …

The Great Depression marked a fateful passage in the annals of the American people. President Roosevelt's New Deal, the nation's signature response, proved to be a determined but erratic reaction. Against the backdrop of a nation deeply mired in an unrelenting international depression, dramatic events played themselves out in the lives of the men and women of Utah. Throughout, fidelity to principles of independence, self-reliance, and self-sufficiency were sorely challenged.

The people of Utah found succor in two almost diametrically opposed responses. The New Deal offered an amalgam of programs and panaceas through which the federal government attempted to deliver …

From 1988 to 1998 the percentage of female school principals increased from 20% to 48% and continues to grow. The number of women entering school administration has grown as has the number of principal turnovers. Women who seek positions in educational leadership face many issues. Ten barriers that continue to surface in the research are: little encouragement to assume leadership roles; lack of female role models; perceived need to be "better qualified"; women cannot discipline older, male students; resentment of males working for females; some educators prefer male principals; reluctance to relocate; long hours; women lack the desire for power; …

Black women are subjected to both racism and sexism; those who achieve privileged status are also the targets of classism. Frazier (1957), in addressing issues of the Black bourgeoisie, said "the frustration of the majority of the women ... is probably due to the idle or ineffectual lives which they lead" (p. 222). These negative judgments are based on the gaze, in other words, who these women "look like" from the outside. We hear a different story when listening to the voices of Black women educators working for social change.

In The Southwest Airlines Way: Using the Power of Relations to Achieve High Performance, Gittell, an assistant professor of management at Brandeis University and a member of Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Global Airline Industry Program, provides a template of female leadership. Gittell described Southwest Airlines as a gemstone in the industry. After the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Southwest did not layoff employees; yet, the airline showed profit each year. Southwest's 2002 $9 billion total market value was greater than all other major airlines combined (Gittell, 2003, p. 3). Racial And Ethnic Preferences In College Admissions: How Much Is Too Much?, Donald F. Uerling

Two 2003 Supreme Court decisions - Grutter v. Bollinger and Gratz v. Bollinger-considered challenges to the use of racial preferences in the admissions policies of two different colleges at the University of Michigan. Taken together, these two Equal Protection Clause decisions stand for the propositions that the educational benefits resulting from a diverse student body can be a compelling government interest and that race and ethnicity can be used as a "plus" to promote that interest, but not to the extent that such a preference insulates minority applicants from competition with other applicants and ensures the admission of nearly every …

Women In The Superintendency: Opting In Or Opting Out?, Mimi Wolverton, R. Timothy Macdonald

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The purpose of this article was to report the most common career path to the superintendency in the Northwest. We compared career paths across four subgroups of study participants-male and female superintendents and male and female certificate holders who were not superintendents. First, we sought commonalities in the routes chosen by current male and female superintendents in the study. Second, we examined the career choices of potential superintendency applicants to determine whether they were actually gaining the types of administrative experience required by school boards and search consultants. We concluded with implications for practice based on study findings.

This paper examines animation from several different views – historical through the modern computer generated. It covers a short history of animation with a detailed look at some of the early examples with an emphasis on the techniques and tricks used in their creation. It also looks at how computers have changed the animation industry and expanded it into other occupations such as architectural modeling. A comparison between traditional and computer animation processes is noted as well as a look at software, its components, usability, and more. Types of and processes for rendering are also described and compared.

Fish is one of the most abundant wild foods available to a small island nation. Certain species of seafood have moved from being ‘poor man’s food’ to ‘luxury food’ over time. It may be said that the Irish do not behave as island people since we have little or no history of exploiting the sea compared to our European partners. Ireland was late developing its fishing industry and now suffers reduced EU fish quotas, the unfortunate but necessary result of decades of over-fishing on European waters. This curriculum was born from a true love of the magic of words and the passion that gifted students display for exploring the wondrous world of fantasy. The reading was designed to highlight the elements of traditional faerie tales in stories that engage students and inspire them to create their own miraculous stories. Each literature project was specially created to motivate students to demonstrate in-depth understanding of these specific novels and to facilitate their perception of the elements of faerie tales as a distinct genre. The writer's guide directs students through the steps of composing an original faerie tale.
