Robert Pinkerton: Principal Agent Of The Bfbs In The Kingdoms Of Germany, Wayne A. Detzler

According to Lord Teignmouth, who served as the first president of the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS), Robert Pinkerton (1780-1859) was the "most diligent of all the Society's agents."

This paper seeks to build upon such interest in Pinkerton's work and observations, dividing his Bible Society career into four phases: The Russian Years; His Hopes for War-Torn Europe; Surviving the Apocrypha Crisis; and Pinkerton's New Path in Frankfurt.

The last quarter century of archaeological discoveries have significantly enriched and nuanced our understanding of interactions between the Greek world and the Levant during the Greek Archaic period (conventionally defined as 776-479 B.C.E.). They have also allowed us to construct an increasingly detailed model explaining the diffusion of knowledge from Mesopotamia to Greece at this time. In addition, advances in our understanding of oral cultures, and the role of oral narrative traditions within them have cast valuable new light on the ways in which the Homeric epics appropriate, adapt, and preserve cultural knowledge. Following publication of the National Languages Strategy on 18 December 2002 the teaching of foreign languages (FL) in the primary school is again high on the agenda in England as in other parts of Europe. Research has shown in the past (Burstall et al., 1974) that an early start in FL does not necessarily result in any long-term advantage in terms of proficiency. However, the above study also draws other conclusions, less widely reported, which remain significant. These include insufficient liaison between primary and secondary schools, lack of continuity in foreign language learning across phases, inadequate training of teachers, …

The efficacy of direct democracy throughout California's history continues to be a subject of intense debate, a state-wide phenomenon with an international audience. California boasts the world's fifth largest economy, and plays a leadership role in national, and sometimes even international, politics. British scholar Wyn Grant, studying the politics of air quality management in California, succinctly sums up the burning issue for environmentalists worldwide who are striving to understand the efficacy of California's activists' efforts: in "Direct Democracy in California: Example or Warning?" Trotter Review

In this interview, Rev. Irene Monroe points out that the issue of “Black homophobia” is a complicated one that can only be explained by examining racism and all the pertinent economic, social and cultural dynamics that emanate from the discrimination of the Black race in the United States. According to Monroe, the failure of Black communities to embrace their gay and lesbian sons and daughters stems partly from their lack of understanding of the racial dynamics affecting Black Gay and Lesbian people, as well as the rhetoric of the Black Evangelist right which is heavily influenced by White racist thought.

Homosexual And Racial Identity Conflicts And Depression Among African‐American Gay Males, William H. Alexander

What does it mean to be male, Black and homosexual in the United States? In this study of 191 such men, William H. Alexander examines whether racial identity conflict and homosexual identity conflict contribute to depression in Black gay men. Alexander reports that being Black, a Black male, and a homosexual puts one in a vulnerable position that requires that he cope with a variety of stereotypes from every society with which he interacts. This pressure contributes to depression in this population.

With contributors from an impressive array of scholars and journalists, The Greatest Taboo: Homosexuality in Black Communities, edited by Delroy Constantine‐Simms, attempts to tackle a wide variety of issues pertaining to homosexuality in Black communities in various parts of the world. While the book cannot claim to have satisfactorily explained all the issues, a fair attempt has been made. Certainly the book succeeds in illustrating the complexity of Black homosexuality.

This doctoral dissertation gives a comprehensive, organic and profound systematization to all that he preached to the people of his time regarding the Virgin Mother of God. No complete, organic study of Savonarolan Marian theology has been done except for the Licentiate thesis that was based mainly on the writings or treatises of the friar. This present study will examine and relate Savonarola's thoughts on the Virgin Mary as they come forth from his sermons. These sermons were based on an array of biblical books, especially Old Testament prophets, and include a rich diversity of subject matter relative to this …
