Since his death in 1962, and particularly in the last twenty-five years, Georges Bataille has become a major figure in intellectual circles. Critics such as Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Julia Kristeva and Philippe Sollers, to name but a few, have all contributed to bringing Bataille's work to the foreground. Regarded as a significant influence on contemporary thought, Bataille is considered a precursor of post-modernism. Yet, while he has received increasing attention, this attention has converged primarily on his essays and philosophical works. Teenagers seem easy targets for despotic groups, such as cults. Moral conscience, however, may be a dike against a sea of despotism. John Henry Newman and Miguel de Unamuno were giant defenders of conscience in their respective cultures. Their philosophies and phenomenologies of conscience depict conscience as supreme in the mind of the ordinary person, though subject to pressures, even death. This notion becomes alive in the deep religious crisis and conversion of their adolescence, marked by a sense of personal divine experience, confidence in final predestination or holy trust, and an ethical commitment. "Moving On," Men And The Changing Character Of Interwar Working-Class Neighborhoods: From The Files Of The Manchester And Liverpool City Police, Joanne Klein

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Investigations of complaints regarding police families made to the Manchester and Liverpool City Police provide insights into working-class neighborhoods not available in standard sources. The files suggest that interwar neighborhoods were losing long-term residents and becoming more diverse and variable. Families tried to find areas with similar standards regarding noise, space and privacy. Formerly stable neighborhoods changed, creating stress if changes were too dramatic. Even minor tensions could unsettle streets since causes of strain tended to reflect on respectability and status. While women remained the main presence due to their domestic responsibilities, men were spending more time with their families. …

In an essay entitled “Literature of the Cowboy State” in 1978, Robert Roripaugh opened his discussion by declaring, “As far as serious literature from the American West is concerned, the least known, most neglected and uncataloged body of writing [. . .] is that of Wyoming” (26). He goes on to assert that there is little consistency “in the state’s literary output” (26). Twenty-five years later, Roripaugh’s remarks are still valid. Land, Labor, And Leadership: The Political Economy Of Hualapai Community Building, 1910-1940, Jeffrey Shepherd

Increasingly, scholars are exploring the complex interplay between economic change and cultural identity, in which native communities and individuals respond creatively to the challenges post by captialism and wage labor. Utilizing political economy as an interpretive framework, this essay explores the ways Hualapais incorporated changes around them into their worldviews and agendas. In doing so, it moves beyond questions of agency and adapptation, persistence and innovation, to suggest that scholars consider how "incorporation," frequently seen as a unidirectional, not to mention wholly destructive, phenomenon, can in fact me multifaceted and constructive.

Learning To Persevere: The Popular Teachings Of Tendai Ascetics, Stephen G. Covell

Comparative Religion Publications

This paper introduces the teachings of three contemporary practitioners of Tendai Buddhism. I argue that the study of Japanese Buddhism has focused on doctrine and the past to the detriment of our understanding of contemporary teaching. Through an examination of the teachings of contemporary practitioners of austerities, I show that practice is drawn on as a source more than classical doctrine, that conservative values are prized, and that the teachings show strong similarities to the teachings of the new religions, suggesting a broad-based shared worldview.

In this thesis I explore the rhetoric behind the assessment push nation-wide and, particularly, in California. I take a close look at what politicians, educators, and citizens say about public education and their views of the current educational reform: whether they are speaking in support of or opposition to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. I look specifically at the finances of public education in California, the impact and current outcome of NCLB, and propose new reforms as suggested by those intimately involved in education.

Being Sisyphus: A Writing Pedagogy For At-Risk Students, Eric David Sullivan

This thesis discussess the limitations of the standards-based movement and suggests that some schools, especially those whose mission it is to work exclusively with at-risk students, need to be allowed to set local behavioral standards before any consideration can be given to setting and teaching academic standards. It mainly focuses on Phoenix High School, a community day school in the Corona-Norco Unified School District, and discusses how the standards based movement is not suited to meet the needs of its students.

This thesis suggests the incorporation of "Genre Theory" into First Year Composition (FYC) at California State University (CSUSB) as a means of alleviating the lack of transfer of what is learned in FYC to other university writing. In examing the feasibility of that incorporation, it takes into consideration the demands made on the FYC course across universities and specifically at CSUSB.
