Oral Histories

Morgan’s full name is, Kristopher Morgan Powell. He was born in Mandevol, Jamaica in 1973. His parents were divorced, but his father was an engineer and his mother was a civil servant who worked in the founding years of the newly-independent Jamaican government. His mother moved to the US during his parents’ divorce and she established herself in Harlem, and when he moved to New York in 1974 they lived on Olinville Avenue in the Bronx, but spent much time in Harlem with his mom’s friends. Though Powell is Jamaican-American, he identifies as African-American because of his weak connection to …

Graphical Probabilistic Switching Model: Inference And Characterization For Power Dissipation In Vlsi Circuits, Shiva Shankar Ramani

Power dissipation in a VLSI circuit poses a serious challenge in present and future VLSI design. A switching model for the data dependent behavior of the transistors is essential to model dynamic, load-dependent active power and also leakage power in active mode - the two components of power in a VLSI circuit. A probabilistic Bayesian Network based switching model can explicitly model all spatio-temporal dependency relationships in a combinational circuit, resulting in zero-error estimates. However, the space-time requirements of exact estimation schemes, based on this model, increase with circuit complexity [5, 24]. This work explores a non-simulative, importance sampling based, …

Moonlight In Miami: A Field Study Of Human-Robot Interaction In The Context Of An Urban Search And Rescue Disaster Response Training Exercise, Jennifer L. Burke

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explores human-robot interaction during a 16-hour high-fidelity Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) disaster response drill with teleoperated robots. Situation awareness and team interaction were examined using communication analysis. Operators (n=5) sought assistance from team members to compensate for difficulties building or maintaining situation awareness. Operator-team member communication focused on relating what was seen through the robot's eye view with prior knowledge and planning search strategies. Results suggest operators need a new cognitive mental model to filter and comprehend data provided by the robot, and that robot-assisted search is a team task rather than an individual one. Why Jim Does Not Escape To Illinois In Mark Twain’S Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn, James Tackach

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Among critical readers of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jim’s decision not to escape from slavery by merely crossing the Mississippi River to the Illinois shore provokes active discussion. This article examines Jim’s decision in light of the racial climates of Ohio and Illinois during the 1840s, the setting of Twin’s novel and provides more evidence that Jim’s plan to steer clear of Illinois and head toward Ohio was quite sound.
