Census 2000: The Latino Population And The Transformation Of Metropolitan New York, Laird W. Bergad

Introduction: This study examines demographic and socioeconomic aspects of the Latino population of the New York City area according to the 2000 census.

Methods: Data on Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, reorganized for public use by the Minnesota Population Center, University of Minnesota, IPUMSusa. Cases in the dataset were weighted and analyzed to produce population estimates.

Results: New York City’s Latino population increased from 23.7% of all New Yorkers in 1990 to 27% in 2000. If growth rates between 1990 and 2000 continue for the remainder of the decade, Latinos …

In 1999 I embarked on a photographic journey to various cities around the world. The photographs produced are the results of my critical attention as a woman and a feminist to the issues concerning gender, travel and landscape aesthetics. This dissertation is an analysis of my documentary photographs. I am interested in ways in which my photographs correspond with the French feminist theories of Helene Cixous and Lucy Irigaray on ecriture feminine. Based on the generalization and classification of passives in the world's languages put forward by Givόn (1979), Siewierska (1984), and Keenan (1990) this study recapitulates the universal types of passive. Twenty types of passive are proposed. They are grouped into ten pairs of contrastive types; namely, passive vs. ergative, true passive vs. pseudo-passive, direct vs. indirect passive, sentential vs. lexical passive, personal vs. impersonal passive, plain vs. reflexive passive, neutral vs. adversative or favorable passive, basic vs. non-basic passive, synthetic vs. periphrastic passive, passive with patient subject vs. passive with non-patient subject. Documents on Russian commerce in the Black Sea and the Levant offer eyewitness description, firsthand observation and authentic information. These qualities, to varying degrees, are evinced in this translated memorandum penned by tsarist vice-consul Carlo A. Marracciny in Smyrna in December 1812 and addressed to Foreign Minister Rumiantsev. The Marracciny report merits attention by scholars of Russia's Eastern policy as a reminder that primary sources on Russian trade, and on wider tsarist aims, in the Near East warrant collection and presentation in an accessible format for students and scholars alike. When a cat's human friend leaves the house and tells it to be good, the cat does many things it considers good, like shredding the curtains, eating a house plant, and digging into the garbage. In this review, originally published in Thinking: The Journal of Philosophy for Children 16(4), 2003, Gareth B. Matthews demonstrates that young children can understand and enjoy the irony of sarcasm. They also enjoy grappling with the story's philosophical irony: the problem of clarifying the difficult question of what makes an action good or bad.

《盤瓠》內容講述一隻稱為「盤瓠」的犬，為某國大王殺敵，於是大王按承諾將屬於自己的女子嫁與盤瓠，盤瓠就帶女子到山上居住，並且繁衍後矞，漸漸成為一族人。本文將探討此則神話的內容隨不同版本所產生的變化，以及其顯示出的原始文化與神精。而盤瓠神話流傳於中國西南少數民族之間，盤瓠成為了這 些少數民族的圖騰，本文將解釋圖騰崇拜的特徵，以及這些少數民族對盤瓠崇拜所作相應的風俗習慣。

理水(魯迅《故事新編》), 余嘉賢

魯迅 - 有「匕首」、「投槍」美譽的五四文壇傑出作家。他善於創作諷刺時弊的作品， 其作品《狂人日記》和《阿Q正傳》更是一鳴驚人，並奠定他在中國文學史上的不朽地位。 其主要作品還有《吶喊》、《彷徨》、《野草》、《朝花夕拾》、《花邊文學》等。然而，在他的創作中，以古代傳說、神話和歷史事實為題材的，就只有一本《故事新編》。

《故事新編》是一九二二年至一九三五年期間寫成的歷史小說集。魯迅曾講述整體構思《故事新編》時的境況:「1926年秋天，一個人住在廈門的石屋里，對著大海，翻著古書、四近無生人氣，心裏空空洞洞。……這時我不願想到目前，於是回憶在心裏出土了，寫了十篇《朝花夕拾》；並且仍舊拾取古代的傳說之類，預備足成八則《故事新編》」當時，魯迅因支持北京學生的愛國運動，而被北洋軍閥政府所通緝，故逃到廈門，其後以古代傳說為題材，寫了 《故事新編》。何以作者會創作《故事新編》呢？姜振昌學者在《故事新編與中國新歷史小說》中補充了魯迅作《故事新編》的原因和心境:「想暫時回避激烈的時政爭鬥卻又難以忘卻現實，於是便以這獨特的方式向社會作『調侃』式的搗亂，以排遣自己看似輕鬆實則不可重負的感受。」由此說明，魯迅對當時政治有所不滿，但又不敢直斥其非，故結合上古傳說而創作《故事新編》，藉以透過縱容不迫的方式來帶出政治實況。

理水(魯迅《故事新編》), 黃德彰

魯迅《故事新編》中的作品均是以中國歷史或神話重新改編而成的，故此初時這些作品被當作充滿現實感的歷史小說來評論。直至五十年代中期開始深入討論《故事新編》中的作品是否針對現實的諷刺作品。而《故事新編．理水》正是最具諷刺意味的篇章。現先闡述夏禹治水的歷史及有關其治水的神話傳說，及後再分析《理水》一文中的諷刺意象。

盤瓠神話, 陳偉倫

槃瓠，又稱盤瓠或盤護。這一名稱，最早見於東漢應劭《風俗通義》：「高辛之犬槃瓠，討滅犬戎，高辛以女妻之，封槃瓠氏。」《槃瓠》這個故事與《蚕馬》 極之相似，亦是中國神話中極重要的故事之一，在此篇章中我們可以得到一個圖騰文化、民族的起源、歷史、人類學以至民族文化等極其珍貴的資料。
