This collection of six short stories examines the lives of characters who have been betrayed or abandoned by family, friends, or lovers. These are stories of characters stuck in patterns of behavior who often use fantasy to cope with or skew their reality. However, these stories also demonstrate the triumph of breaking these patterns, of moving on, letting go, and persevering in spite of hurt and disappointment.

Retracing The Novel: Amatory Fiction And The Novel's Rise, Sarah Elizabeth Alderfer

Arguing against. Ian Watt's The Rise of the Novel and other academically accepted accounts of the history of the novel, this thesis positions amatory fiction at the forefront of novel's traditional genealogy by comparing amatory fiction with the Gothic novel in order to link the two genres outside of realistic fiction such as Pamela. Using Love in Excess by Eliza Haywood and The Monk by Matthew Lewis as representative examples of amatory fiction and Gothicism, respectively, this thesis ultimately establishes a connection between the three genres. Conspiracy Rhetoric In Cyberspace: Jim Condit And The 9/11 Attacks On America, An Analysis Of The Voice And Appeals Used In Condit's Rhetoric, Kreg Allan Kinney

This thesis analyzes the voices and appeals used in conspiracy rhetoric which is distributed via the internet. The voices, one measure of the argument's authority, are analyzed and described in depth, with eleven voices identified. These voices and their significance to Condit's text as a whole are discussed. Following the voice analysis, an Aristotelian analysis of the text's appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos is performed to examine the persuasive force of Condit's argument. Finally, the correlation between the voices and the appeals is examined to determine the strength of the correlation between the two constructs and to determine whether …

Educational multimedia tools that are marketed most successfully usually are described as "interactive" learning resources. The word interactive broadly suggests a host of positive learning experiences - student-driven inquiry, audio-visual support of ideas, and critical thinking or decision-making opportunities. However, the term interactive often is used loosely, and begs for a more concrete definition. This study defines multimedia interactivity as a give-and-take relationship between a technology tool and its human user. Technology itself is not interactive, but technology can be designed and developed to enhance an interactive experience. This study looks at the problem of defining such a nebulous term, …

As Church membership grew to nearly three million in the early 1970s, the Church faced the challenges of extending contact between General Authorities in Utah and many members who lived far from Church headquarters. While some members in the western United States could tune in to radio or television broadcasts of general conference, hundreds of thousands of Church members worldwide did not have access to the broadcasts.
