Twice a year, in the May and November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of the studies appeared during the six-month period preceding the compilation of the bibliography (January through June 2002 for the present bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective; we make no attempt to include all research and research-related articles that appeared in the period under review. In a game theoretic framework it can be argued that a gender sensitive institution is an offshoot of certain social conditions, which in most cases need to be acted upon by some anti-establishment catalytic agent. Given the fact that among about half of the population there is a need for such an institution, the main function of a catalytic agent is to engineer a conversion of that need into an active demand. In a society characterized by gender exploitation, catalytic agent can only come exogenously. For a sub-society it is easier to come across such an exogenous catalytic agent. The …

The Columbia Basin of Central Washington has a relatively recent Latter-day Saint history among the regions of the western states. Most of the sparsely populated rural areas in the west that have large concentrations of Latter-day Saints were originally established as "Mormon" settlements. The basin referred to lies between the Snake and Columbia Rivers and now has thousands of Latter-day Saints who have chosen to inhabit the historically barren land and call it their home. The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

Individual-Systemic Violence: Disabled Women’S Standpoint, Maria Barile

This article presents an insider reflection on questions of violence and women with disabilities. We explore reasons for the systemic omission of women with disabilities from mainstream research and from services addressing non-disabled women’s experiences. Several questions are postulated. Has segregation of women with disabilities from the mainstream rendered a large part of their experiences, including the experience of violence, invisible? Have misconceptions about the lives of women with disabilities contributed to exclusionary practices within the women’s movement?

This article further submits that violence against women with disabilities assumes many forms, both individual and systemic. It explores several factors, among …

During this time Cuba has instituted free and universally accessible health care and education and has built on its formerly weak pension system to develop a universal and government sponsored one.

Like most white South Carolinians of my generation, I have various strands of European ancestry: Scots-Irish, English, German, Swiss, and since my name is "Williams," probably Welsh by way of England, then Ulster. However, it was the Swiss strand that I was most conscious of when growing up because I knew a little more about it. A grandmother often talked to us children about "our people," about "dear old Grandfather," whose own grandfather had come from Switzerland in the mid-eighteenth century: George Sightler (Seitler, Siteler, Sitler); and we had a written history of his family in South Carolina.

To tell the story of Swiss immigrants in the lands along the Saluda and Congaree rivers, the author became the hunter, the farmer and the soldier desperate to survive in a severe and glorious wilderness.

In 1966 New Order regime imposed a regulation that demands Indonesian citizens of Chinese descendants to change their name with "Indonesian name" to accelerate the process of assimilation "foreign descendents" into Indonesian society. This article examines this practice of changing names by surveying the name of Chinese in the obituary section of mass media. The writer argues that the regulation allows the Chinese descendants to change their names in any way they find appropriate. In doing to, it expands the anthrophoneme deixis function in Indonesia.

Artikel ini mempertanyakan sejauh mana masyarakat Belanda progresif di bidang norma bahasa, kesusastraan, dan gender. Dinilai dengan diskusi tentang norma bahasa di kamus Van Dale dan resepsu terhadap kamus tersebut di Indonesia serta pandangan terhadap penulis wanita dan statusnya dalam masyarakat Belanda. Artikel ini berkesimpulan bahwa kebudayaan Belanda tidaklah seprogresif yang dibayangkan orang. Dalam hal gender, pandangan terhadap status dan kemampuan perempuan yang agak miring mungkin disebabkan oleh perempuan itu sendiri. Dalam hal kesusastraan, misalnya, perempuan akan diperlakukan sama seperti laki-laki jika mereka menulis dan bertingkah laku berbeda dari yang sekarang.

This study discusses the relationship between indirect speech act and politeness in directive speech act. To get the data, questioners with personal information of respondents and nine directive speech acts which must be assessed by these Indonesian speakers in Jakarta are employed. The analysis shows that there is a positive correlation between the indirectness of a directive speech act and the degree of politeness. The more indirect a directive speech act, the more polite it is. Nevertheless, the correlation is not absolute. There are other parameters that determine the degree of politeness such as intonation, choice of words, and cultural …
