The purpose of this study was to chronicle the journeys often females of color to the office of the superintendent, to document how they use the power of the office and to record their perceptions, as superintendent, of the office( s) they hold or have held. It provides an in-depth look at the females as people and as leaders. One premise of this study is that access to education and equity in employment opportunity are key factors in determining who may serve in the nation's highest offices. The purpose of this Investigation is to explore the intra-history of the three remaining Spanish Benedictine monks of New Norcia (Western Australia) who were recruited in the 1920s by the third Bishop of New Norcia, Anselmo Catalan. This story is about a man named John Forrest, my great-great-great uncle. I want to Investigate how he shaped and enacted upon the space we now call the State of Western Australia: as explorer, as surveyor, and as Premier. The photographs in my thesis explore how he impacted upon the landscape that we currently observe: they illustrate ways in which his past influence can be detected in the landmarks of our state, and they act as evidence of the “bigger picture”, demonstrating the effects his influence has had on the present condition of the land itself. The following dissertation is a "contribution to contemporary debates about the industrial revolution and the perpetuation of 'differcnce'."¹ It covers the era of Cornish industrialisation and the attendant socio-economic and cultural changes from the emergence of copper mining in the 1690s to the eve of its crash in 1866, through the observations of a selection of contemporary travellers/writers. It explores the image of Com wall through West Barbary versus Industrial Civilisation, and compares the county's processes of industrialisation with the canonical industrial revolution of the midlands and the north of England. Figuring Rhetoric: From Antistrophe To Apostrophe Through Catastrophe, Jane Sutton, Mari Lee Mifsud

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This essay explores rhetoric tropologically through various strophes: antistrophe, catastrophe, and apostrophe. Our purpose is to delineate problems and possibilities that these tropes pose for rhetoric in an effort to create new rhetorics. We seek to display the antistrophic and catastrophic figurations of rhetoric and then use visual lenses of photography and cinema to disrupt the figurations. Following the disruption, we seek to heighten sensibilities to other figurations, in particular an apostrophic figuration. We cast apostrophe as a figure for change because it marks a deeply felt turn toward difference and otherness. Turned as such, rhetoric becomes erotic.

In 1816, Byron's Childe Harold bemoaned: "What deep wounds ever closed without a scar?/The heart's bleed longest, and but heal to wear/That which disfigures it" (III, 84), a fitting expression of the culture's fascination with psychic, emotional, and historical traumas. Felicia Hemans used these exact lines as an epigraph to her poem "The Indian City" in 1828, suggesting again the fascination with suffering that permeated the texts produced by this literary community.

The Relationship Between The "Lies" Christians Believe And Emotional Symptoms Of Anxiety, Anger/Hostility, And Depression, Terry Lee Swan

This correlational study examined the relationship between Christian's irrational beliefs (lies believed) and the number of symptoms of the emotional disturbances: anger/hostility, anxiety, and depression. Previous studies have shown that a relationship between these variables exists. A total of 55 subjects, 24 male and 31 female, from 3 randomly selected churches volunteered to participate in the study. The subjects completed two questionnaires: The Lies We Believe Questionnaire, developed by Chris Thurman, Ph.D. and A Symptom Questionnaire, developed by Robert Kellner, M.D. The former identifies irrational beliefs ("lies), and the latter identifies the number of symptoms of anger/hostility, anxiety, and depression. …

The purpose of this culminating project is to compile information about the evolution and development of the idea of time travel in western literature.

This endeavor offers a historical approach tracing the evolution of the idea of time travel in literature, its consideration in science, and the interaction between these two fields to create a new theme of art.

To create images is to create the soul, opening up to the enigma within us. If the body is the container for the soul, how we navigate through life may individuate our essential nature. How we react to and utilize this awareness provides a framework for portraying our existence. My dissertation focuses on the Euthyphro question, from one of the Socratic dialogues, understood in terms of the following dilemma posed against theistic ethics: (1) Either what is good/right is moral because God commands it, or it is not. (2) If what is good/right is moral because God commands it, then the good/right is arbitrary and vacuous. (3) If what is good/right is moral for reasons other than that God commands it, then God is superfluous from the standpoint of morality. (4) So, either the good/right is arbitrary and vacuous or God is superfluous to morality.
