Doing Homework: Negotiations Of The Domestic In Twentieth-Century Novels Of Teaching, Margaret M. Watson Jan 2002

Doing Homework: Negotiations Of The Domestic In Twentieth-Century Novels Of Teaching, Margaret M. Watson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this project, I analyze seven twentieth-century novels of teaching in order to investigate how notions of “home” and “school” are constructed, connected, and perpetuated in popular teaching narratives. Images of teachers in much of this century’s fiction often rest on views of the school as home that are derived from stereotypes of gender, race, and nationality—stereotypes that can be both inaccurate and repressive. For this reason, I examine these texts in light of how they negotiate school space with domestic space (“domestic” both as personal or familial, and as public or national). I contend that many of these narratives …

Art To Educate: A History Of Public Art In The New York City Public Schools, 1890–1976, Michele Cohen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

"Art to Educate" chronicles a history of public art in the New York City public schools from the beginning until the passage of the City's Percent-for-Art Law in 1982. Its purpose is twofold: to bring to light public artworks in school buildings that are typically ignored in discussions of public art and to create a historical framework for understanding this collection.

To contextualize this collection, "Art to Educate" links public art in schools to school architecture and the Board of Education's school construction programs over the last century; to a consideration of educational theory and viewpoints in art education; and …

For "The Boys In Blue": The Art Galleries Of The Sanitary Fairs, Evdokia Savidou-Terrono

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Beginning in 1863 and continuing until 1865, the Sanitary Fairs held in Northern cities, to raise money for Union soldiers were the most significant fundraisers of the Civil War. The fairs combined the local with the global, and enticed visitors with relics of the colonial past, interesting artifacts of Native American culture, souvenirs from far away lands, and fascinating technological inventions. For the majority of the fairs however, the art exhibitions were without doubt the most significant, complex and politically charged exhibits, and they are the focus of this paper.

Visitors to the art galleries were attracted by their educational …

Public Outreach And The "Hows" Of Archaeology : Archaeology As A Model For Education, Jon Darin Daehnke Jan 2002

Public Outreach And The "Hows" Of Archaeology : Archaeology As A Model For Education, Jon Darin Daehnke

Dissertations and Theses

There is growing awareness of the importance of public outreach in archaeology. Many professional archaeologists argue that in order to ensure continued funding we must communicate the relevance of our discipline to the public in a more effective manner. Furthermore, it is often argued that public outreach and education provides perhaps the only reliable defense against looting and rampant psuedoarchaeology.

Current outreach activities, however, tend to focus on what archaeologists have discovered about the past. While this type of outreach is important, a more effective model for public outreach would focus on the methods of archaeology, rather than the results. …

Glorious Reality: Presidential Fretting About The Alan Workshop, Chris Crowe

Faculty Publications

Reality is cruel.

When I was nominated to run for president of ALAN, I was flattered and briefly entertained dreams of grandeur. If I were lucky enough to win, I thought, my friends, family, and colleagues would be so very proud. If I won, I dreamed, I would be lavished with presidential perks and presents. If I became president of ALAN, I imagined, I would get to wallow in the glory of presiding over a glorious ALAN Workshop.

So far, this is what reality has taught me:

Proud? My local friends, family, and colleagues barely even noticed when the election …

Ya Boundary Breakers And Makers, Chris Crowe

Vincent van Gogh. Pablo Picasso. Georgia O'Keefe. Jackson Pollock. Andy Warhol. These painters, all incredibly famous now, were at one time on the fringe of the art world, creating their own kind of art, work that pushed back the boundaries of artistic conventions, broke traditional rules, and produced paintings that redefined "art." Their paintings are so well known now that it's easy to take for granted the impact these artists had on the art world, but their challenges to existing standards and forms have had a lasting impact on modem art.

Young adult literature has also had its share of …

De Facto Ya Literature And False Expectations, Chris Crowe Jan 2002

De Facto Ya Literature And False Expectations, Chris Crowe

Faculty Publications

When I was in the later grades of elementary school and the first year of junior high school, I spent many leisure hours reading stories that had heen written for and marketed to kids like me. Series novels like The Hardy Boys and Tom Swift and comic books by DC and Marvel provided me with plenty of reading material. Those series books, some sports novels, and, when I was in sixth and seventh grade, science fiction novels—especially anything by Jules Verne or H. G. Wells—pretty much accounted for the sum total of my personal knowledge of book-length fiction.

Theatre As A Change Agent: An Analysis Of High School Theatre Education And Its Benefits In Communication And Problem Solving, Cory Losenicky

Graduate Research Papers

Theatre education in the high school has an interesting past. Theatre has a long presence in schools as entertainment, but its benefits to educational outcomes has been largely overlooked. In the United States around the turn of the last century, this schema began to be questioned. In 1936, Columbia University published a book discussing the use of theatre in the United States and its possible uses in education: "The Production of Later 19th Century American Drama" by Garrett Leverton. This book was the first to discuss the beginning of the changing role of theatre in education. Columbia University was not …

Philosophizing With Teenagers, Susan Verducci

Faculty Publications

Part of a special section on connecting with adolescents. Although few adolescents are ever formally exposed to philosophy at middle or high school, almost all are philosophers in the sense that they ask and seek answers to questions that are fundamentally philosophical. Furthermore, studying philosophy can be quite useful for adolescents as it requires that they practice developing clear and coherent reasons for believing or doing something, provides the tools with which they can follow the logic of any ideological stance, and provides models of alternative answers and a way of examining how the historical period in which one lives …
