This thesis is a development of the theories presented by Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and Bruno Bettelheim concerning archetypes, the anima/animus concept, the Hero Cycle, and identity development through fairy tales. I argue that there are vital rites of passage missing in Anglo-Saxon culture, and while bibliotherapy cannot replace them, it can help adolescents synthesize their experiences. The theories of Jung, Campbell, and Bettelheim demonstrate this concept by defining segments of the story and how they apply to the reader. The aim of this project is to create software that will give non-musical people the ability to compose convincingly 'real' music in specific musical genres. By 'real' music we mean music which is not obviously "machine generated", recognisable as being of the selected genre, of an aesthetically pleasing quality (a very subjective concept) and usable in a commercial context. To achieve this goal various computational techniques are used including genetic algorithms and finite state automata. This story is about a man named John Forrest, my great-great-great uncle. I want to Investigate how he shaped and enacted upon the space we now call the State of Western Australia: as explorer, as surveyor, and as Premier. The photographs in my thesis explore how he impacted upon the landscape that we currently observe: they illustrate ways in which his past influence can be detected in the landmarks of our state, and they act as evidence of the “bigger picture”, demonstrating the effects his influence has had on the present condition of the land itself. 羅貴祥是八十年代香港文學界繼西西、也斯等人而起的現代派作家。由於他喜歡運用創新、複雜的技巧，並常在文字、結構上玩遊戲，故其作品一般較難讀懂。所以本文嘗試在神話和心理分析的理論基礎上細讀文本，為他的作品〈欲望肚擠眼〉提供一種解讀。本文先以「荒誕」理論分析「荒誕」元素在小說擔任的角色――整篇小說的基調和風格及故事的背景和展開的關鍵；再從兩線人物隱藏的關係及故事情節的發展分析整篇小說的主題 (聖與俗的矛盾) 和結構 (一組反方向的追尋結構)；並在結語部分略評小說未盡完善的地方。

司馬長風說:「在現代散文學家中，論幽默才能，首推梁實秋。」梁實秋的散文以典雅幽默見稱，但以前由於各種原因，內地許多讀者沒有機會欣賞梁實秋的散文。而近年來，他的小品文風靡內地，深受讀者的喜愛。細看那些評論梁實秋散文風格的小文章，我覺得還沒有人對梁實秋散文中的精華一幽默作細緻深入的研究。未免使人有遺珠之憾。所以我嘗試分析一下梁實秋小品文里獨特的幽默藝術的表達技巧。我以為梁式幽默的最大特點是把世俗的內容包含在典雅的形式中。借雅俗對比，於失衡、不協調的情景中產生幽默。梁實秋專研英國文學，可能受英國Essay 影響，他的文章結構嚴密，層次分明。敘述起來從容不迫，具有閒適意味。而他以半文言式精煉語句作文，則同使他的文章洋溢著

濃濃的國文氣息。我們可以看到梁實秋的小品文仿佛是「洋務」加「國粹」的中西合璧的寧馨兒。他對世態百相的針眨勸勉則隱含在詼諧的雅言里。其次，梁實秋還擅長借各種修辭方式如比喻、排比、誇張等製造輕鬆活潑的氣氛，還以漫畫手法宛轉地表達他對世故人情的諷喻。

這篇小論艾還把梁實秋和董橋散文的幽默的藝術特色作了一番比較。比較他們如何借修辭、懸念、易景易色、結構變化、行文情緒的推進及偶發偏見等方式巧妙地在文章中摧化出幽默感。

是顛三倒四, 還是另有玄機 : 從後現代角度看劉鎮偉三部電影, Haiyan Chen

九十年代的電影可謂多采多姿，已跳出單一類型片的框架，箇中更不乏出色的作品。劉鎮偉是一個有別於一般商業電影的導演，其著眼點除商業角度的考慮外，還會以有限的空間作出新的嘗試。他的作品常受到很大的爭議性，或被指作「語無倫次」，或被稱讚為「奇思妙想」，毀譽參半之餘，各執一端。正因為他的作品較為複雜，充滿拼湊、戲謔和指涉，更玩樂其中，故不能以一般的評論方法作討論。但他的作品又未至於如徐克、王家衛般風格濃烈，不能以「作者論」的角度去分析。後現代文化角度則對上述拼湊、戲謔的手法曾作出討論，故可藉此作為一個「切入點」，嘗試從另一個角度去觀看他的作品。這篇文章便是從這方 面著手，以他三部具有代表性的電影為例，分析他在塑造一個虛構的故事時所使用的手法，並討論他在一個商業電影制度下，作品中「別具一格」兼「瘋癲好玩」的特性。

呈交畢業論文的日子，也就是剛打完「木人巷」，準備下山的時候。在木人巷獨力闖關「吃苦」時，每個人都會有其獨特的經歷和體會，或是發現「前路兇險」寧可「及早抽身」，或是此際才發現「心有餘而力不足」，最好的當然是「吃得苦中苦，方為人上人」。無論如何，「木人巷」似乎是離開「少林寺」前必需經歷的試煉，縱使到最後得出的結果是焦頭爛額或是半身不遂，但在試煉過程中的 「增進」，亦足可以彌補一切吧！

從準備工作到正式下筆至完成為止，感覺是「苦」！起初的無從入手，中段的埋頭苦幹，尾聲的通宵達旦，全都可以用這個字來概括。俗語云「萬事起頭難」，對於一個沒有多少人曾對他作出研究的導演，在資料搜集上自然有一個難度存在。當一點頭緒都沒有時，唯有從一般的電影雜誌著手。這項吃力不討好的工作，費時非常，而且未必能找到合適的資料。礙於圖書館電腦搜查的局限性，最全面 又最愚蠢的方法，莫過於把書架上所有有關香港電影的書本逐一翻閱。當到最後 還是發覺材料不足時，只好從細閱文本處下手了。

我相信以一個剛起步「學做」論文的初哥而言，如何把批評的理論「漂亮地」「套用」在材料上，是一個非常苦惱的問題。一次又一次地重看「何謂後現代主義」，希望能從那些苦澀的文字上看到一點蛛絲馬跡，告訴我如何入手。這無疑是跟劉鎮偉的奇思一樣，既天馬行空，又摸不著邊際。從以前的不知 / 略知後現代為何物，到現在充當騙人的「江湖術士」，在一知半解之餘，尚可在同輩面前假惺惺地賣弄一番，也可說是一個進步吧！

那年我遇上了織女，織女在漆黑的夜空遇上了牛郎；現在我寫了一個關於織女的故事，天上的織女仍會遇上在凡間的牛郎。

以牛郎織女的故事為小說的素材，嘗試用故事新編的形式在這個傳統的神話故事上發展：運用不同角度敘事，豐富牛郎織女的神話傳說；側重描寫主角的心理變化，令人物的個性更圓形。自古以來，牛郎織女故事，都是歌頌二人至死不渝的愛情。我希望在新編的故事上，除了重現他們對愛情的堅執，同時強調他們的愛情是跨越了時空的限制，然而，卻又敵不過分離的宿命。

小說最初的結構，是以現在仍拜織女的老婆婆為主線，透過她們在現實生活中仍有拜祭七姐（織女）的習俗，表現她們那一代對愛情的堅執，對照現代男女的「隨緣」式的戀愛態度。小說以兩代女性不同的形象作為比較，嘗試用兩、三條線織成一個故事，而織女的形象會呈現在故事中的人物，然後遇上她們的牛郎。但當我描寫牛郎織女相遇的情節時，卻令我改變了故事的內容，因為，當我描寫牛郎織女相遇的場面時，會運用一種比較虛擬的寫作手法，如描寫人物感性的心理，利用故事中四周環境的顏色、聲音及光線，營造故事情節的氣氛；這與描寫現實生活那種較平實的寫法格格不入，未能令小說的調子統一。在這個難題下，我最後決定刪去部份描寫現實的地方，並將小說中的女子變成同一個人―― 織女，以不同的形象在現實中的「牛郎」的身邊出現。

故事改動後，故事的節奏較好，而風格也比較統一。變成了一個織女在小說中不同的時間以不同的形象出現，有時是一個乖巧的女孩子，有時是像鬼魅般出現，有時又是一個被牛郎忽視的不善表達內心的女孩子，希望可以令小說保留神話中織女下凡的仙女神秘的形象及成為牛郎妻子後的賢淑的傳統女性形象；同時又在織女身上加入了現代女孩子的自覺性，以及對牛郎的重視工作更甚於她而感到孤獨的心理描寫，使織女這個人物更圓形。

此外，牛郎在故事中的性格，亦保留了神話中的牛郎那種老實、沉默的性格，但他的生活模式及過份重視工作的態度，都是典型生活在現代的人。故事中刻意減少二人的對話，希望加強他們相處在一起但又不善表達自己內心情感的齷齪感覺。讀者只能從以他們的敘事角度及以全知的敘事角度描述他們在夢境的情節中，才可以窺探他們的心理狀況。

寫這篇小說最大的挑戰是令小說的感覺統一及令小說的時間空間轉換自然。除了每次修改都需要將整部小說仔細地重新審閱一遍，更要改動小說中的字 眼，務求令小說的節奏更統一及更配合內容。從校對的過程中，我學會了以讀者的角度重新閱讀自己的小說，可以更客觀地指出小說中的錯漏。另外，要在傳統的故事上創新，便需要加上不同的元素，令新編的故事有別於舊有的神話，所以我嘗試用不同的方法敘述小說。故事的開首以「我」――織女的角度敘述進行倒序，然後以全知的角度敘述故事；另外在故事中間又會安排較多的篇幅描述夢境的情節以及以牛郎的角度敘述他回憶的片段，加強故事的神秘感覺，使故事的節奏比較跳躍，令小說的意境更豐富。

小說的題目《竊衣》的意思是牛郎織女的神話中，牛郎偷看織女沐浴及偷竊織女羽衣的一個情節。以「竊衣」作為小說的題目是因為這幕對牛郎織女是非常重要，亦是我很喜歡的一節。牛郎因為偷了織女的羽衣，令織女不能返回天上， 然後與他結成夫婦，誕下兩個兒子；而羽衣亦是令織女重返天上的「工具」，從此二人永遠分離，只能每年七月七日鵲橋相會。我認為竊衣除了是牛郎偷織女的衣服的動作外，亦是他們命運的轉捩點。

小說中，我用了頗多的篇幅描寫了天上的織女星及牛郎星遙遙相距的場景， 是因為有一次我在晚上坐飛機。當我望向窗外，看見一大堆閃閃發亮的星星像恆河的沙般在機艙外組成了很多不同的星座圖。我呆看著星星近半小時，興奮的心情久久不能平伏，亦促使我寫了這篇織女星與牛郎星在天上每年相遇一次的故事。希望兩顆星星會再次下凡、重新相遇、繼續相戀以及永遠思念。

乳房——是女性的象徵。有不少女性甘願冒險整容，務求令胸部變得豐滿，藉以吸引男性。既然乳房對女性是這般重要，女性一旦失去乳房，將會面對怎麼樣的心理變化呢 ﹖

小說的中心人物余慧晴，從小受家人愛護，長大後得男友疼愛，性格倚賴﹑內向。中學畢業後，便出來工作，任職文員。她從小就不期望在事業上有什麼傑出的成就，倒希望能夠平凡的過生活，繼而組織一個幸福的家庭。當她碰上郭梓俊，以為找到真愛，可以共度餘生時，竟在一次婚前檢查證實自己患了乳癌，且必須要接受割除乳癌手術。

接受手術後，她的人生有了很大的改變，婚約取消了。未婚夫不辭而別，還要面對因失去乳房而導致心靈上的痛苦，一連串的打擊令她幾近崩潰。幸好這時子言的出現，令她逐漸忘記過去的傷痛，有勇氣迎接新的生活。另一方面，獨居生活也逐漸讓她變得獨立堅強，可是因為身體的缺陷和失戀的陰影，面對子言的追求時，面臨的是人生重大的抉擇。

This article examines the dramatic character of King James I’s reaction to the 1605 Gunpowder Plot - the first act of terrorism in the West - and his attempts both to inscribe the unprecedented crime within the conventional structure of revenge tragedy and to interpret the event according to a model of tragicomedy indebted to John of Patmos' apocalyptic Revelation. On account of applying these cultural and religious paradigms, the King suggested that Parliament be entrusted with judging the conspirators, thus imaginatively displacing his sovereignty onto it.

When Artists Fail: A Reply To Trivedi, Sheila Lintott

In a recent article, ‘An Epistemic Dilemma for Actual Intentionalism’, Saam Trivedi argues that the way we ought to interpret artworks is best understood using the model proposed by hypothetical intentionalism. Trivedi alleges that actual intentionalism faces a serious dilemma, the upshot of which is that actual intentionalists must choose between redundancy and indeterminacy. Largely on the basis of this dilemma, he concludes that even if actual intentionalism is descriptively accurate, it is prescriptively untenable. In this essay, I focus on this alleged dilemma and argue that, contra Trivedi, it fails to undermine the prescriptive legitimacy of moderate actual intentionalism. …

The image of St. Barbara of Nicomedia reading was an addition to the traditional symbolic reference to the saint, the tower. The competence and performance distinction has a complex history in linguistic theory. With this short essay, I would like to step into the flow of that complex history by posing the question of difference, which asks what difference difference makes to linguistic theory. My argument will be that the difference difference makes can be registered through the design feature of language liguistic theory dubs reflexivity. For linguistic theory, reflexivity is not just one design feature among the others inasmuch as it is reflexivity itself that motivates the question of difference.

Perceptions On Bioethics Among General Practitioners In Karachi, Pakistan, Waris Qidwai, Hafeez Qureshi, Iqbal Azam, Syed Sohail Ali, Semi Ayub

Objective: To study the perceptions on bioethics among general practitioners in Karachi, Pakistan.
Design: A questionnaire based cross sectional survey. Settings: 85 general practitioners in Karachi were surveyed at their clinic premises. Main outcome measures: Perceptions on the broad principles of bioethics.
Results: The majority of general practitioners were males, with mean age of 36.3 years, had minimal postgraduate qualifications and continuing medical education. They reported the top five moral duties of a physician and their reaction in the event of the death of a close relative due to a doctor's negligence. A significant number of respondents agreed …
