The Gettysburg Historical Journal

In an era of collective entertainment, before private home entertainment systems, people sought amusement within their communities. One aspect of this community entertainment, the theater, offered a social gathering place. Theaters provided an important dual role for the community—both for entertainment and also a certain amount of public service. Theaters in the 1920s and 1930s, in small towns such as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, served a much different purpose than they do today, with a more prominent and more important role within society. This volume continues and expands on the conversations in Volume 1 about the vitality, influence and contemporary relevance of the Catholic intellectual tradition. The particular concern of this volume is to explore what it means to imbue that tradition in the day-to-day life at Catholic colleges and universities. Contributions focus on such topics as the responsibilities of being stewards of the Catholic intellectual tradition, the challenges and rewards of learning and teaching within that tradition, current perceptions of Catholic identity in academia and the ongoing task of harmonizing faith and reason.

ABOUT THE TEST REPORT AND USE OF THE DATA

The test data contained in this report are a tabulation of the results of a series of tests. Due to the restricted format of these pages, only a limited amount of data and not all of the tractor specifications are included. The full OECD report contains usually about 30 pages of data and specifications. The test data were obtained for each tractor under similar conditions and therefore, provide a means of comparison of performance based on a limited set of reported data.

The British novelist A. S. Byatt frequently writes about art and color theory in her fiction. In Still Life (1985) Byatt intentionally saturates her text with musings on art and color; bordering on the didactic, she devotes long passages to Van Gogh's chromatics and individual characters' theories on art. With The Matisse Stories (1996) her discussion moves into the theory of complementary colors in the story “Art Work,” through the painter Robin Dennison. Steven Paul Hopkins here offers a comparative study of the Sanskrit, Prakrit, and Tamil poems composed by Vedantadesika in praise of important Vaisnava shrines and their icons - poems that are considered to be the apogee of South Indian devotional literature. He examines the varied ways in which Vedantadesika the philosopher and logician works his thought through the distinctive - at times antithetical - medium of the poem. The number of international students pursuing higher education in the United States continues to grow each year. While over 190 countries are represented, over half of the students are coming from Asian countries. According to a 2001 survey of international students studying in the United States, 55% of students come from Asian countries, with China, India, and Japan listed as the top three countries of origin.
