Gnomads, Apple Trees, And The Affairs Of Men: A Fairytale About Activism, James Morgan

SWITCH

The article describes art as a tool for activism rather than simply a form of expression. The article argues that art can be used against corporization and terrorism. The author discusses the ethical use of hacking (hacktivism) to shake up established belief structures, further preparing society for future structures and their imprint on daily life. The similarities and differences between art, activism, vandalism, & terrorism are discussed with the examples of the Seattle Protests; specifically the rhizomatic strategies described by Deleuze & Guttari and utilized by the ‘Black Bloc’ protestors. Programs

"You'll Never Walk Alone" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel and he great Quaker hymn "How Can I Keep From Singing" represent our response to the nightmarish events that occurred in our nation on September 11th. It was a significant date for the chorus, as it was the first rehearsal; rather than cancel after two years of planning and struggling, it was decided to go on and remember those who had perished in the terrorist attacks on that day. The Quakers, or Friends, are a nonviolent peace loving, pacifist religious group and this is their greatest hymn.

The girls' series fiction of the First World War is particularly adept at portraying both the service of women and their idealization, simultaneously encouraging young women to go out into the workforce in the name of patriotism and discouraging them from giving up their roles as the traditional caretakers of men.

On Sport and Society

Watching the Super Bowl on Sunday one could not avoid being moved by some aspect or another of the patriotism on display. 9/11 remains strong in the memory of us all and as I noted last September sport does provide us with opportunities for collective mourning, remembrance, and expressions of patriotism. I also noted that it is a characteristic of Americans to move toward excess in almost everything we do in public ritual.
