Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

In this paper, I will summarize several reports about achievements by United Nations organizations and the Kosovo Force [hereafter KFOR] in the Balkans during 2001. My summary will also include, from the same period, other reports about areas of concern in which these organizations have shown scant interest, despite pleas from leaders and representatives of the peoples in the region. The latter resulted in an unusual letter from the head of the Keston Institute in which he reflected on some of the failures, a letter from which I will present extended portions. This exhibition arose from a collaboration between participants in a Brown University art-history seminar of Fall 2001 and curators from three departments at The RISD Museum: Costume and Textiles; Decorative Arts; and Prints, Drawings, and Photographs. Studying each department's resources in the area of European ornament, the group examined how the work of artisans in materials such as wood, metal, fiber, and ceramics responded to and participated in the inventions of designers who drew patterns for prints. With increased interest in family history research, there is a great need for improvement in procedures for generating genealogical information. One of the most time-consuming parts of the work is searching through records (such as civil records, church records, census records, immigration records, wills, deeds, and certificates, of births, marriages, and deaths) for information about an individual. When multiple records are searched, an individual may appear numerous times. Each of these occurrences may contain identical or unique information about the individual. More complete information (such as pedigree) can be constructed for an individual by combining or linking all the records …

Speaking of the last days, the Lord declared through the ancient Israelite prophet Malachi that Elijah would return "before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord" (Mal. 4:5). And through the prophet Joel, the Lord foretold signs in the heavens "before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come" (Joel 2:31). Jesus' Second Coming is the "day of the Lord" referred to in these prophecies. In early 1893, the Latter-day Saints eagerly anticipated the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple, the culmination of more than forty years of effort and struggle. To allow as many Saints as possible to participate, President Wilford Woodruff announced that a series of dedicatory sessions would be held. To accommodate the many Sunday School children who had "donated of their means to assist in building the Salt Lake Temple... and [had] expressed a desire to visit the Temple at its dedication," the First Presidency set aside April 21 and 22 for the youth of the Church to visit the temple. …

Here is what we got. The people in charge -- faculty, college administrators, trustees, other intellectual elites, and (judging by what they do) the bishops -- do not believe what they need to believe to restore Catholic education to the colleges: that a Catholic education is better because the faith is true. This I call the Indispensable Conviction. It is the pearl of great price. Our leaders no longer possess it. And, without a Catholic education, our magnificent campuses are like whited sepulchers.

The purpose of this study was to investigate what factors may determine productivity among sociology professors and factors that-affect promotions and hiring. In today's academic institutions, the gender barrier is considered nonexistent; however, the actual existence of the gender barrier is often apparent in departmental hiring decisions and university tenure policies. With knowledge of current, often subtle, biased standards, the gender barrier can begin to be dismantled to offer true equality for all potential and current professors. In March of 1997, my sister, Fran, and I took our children to a photography studio in downtown Winston-Salem, N.C. I had my twin girls, who were eight weeks old at the time. Fran had Cameron, a grinning nine month old with curly red hair and startling green eyes. I'll never forget how Cameron looked that morning, giggling as he clapped his stubby fingers together for the photographer. Shimp and Sharma (1987) extended the concept of ethnocentrism to commercial products with the development of a 17-item Consumer Ethnocentrism Scale [CETSCALE]. Consumer ethnocentrism is the belief that purchasing imported products harms the local economy, increases unemployment, and is morally wrong (Skimp and Sharma 1987). Shimp and Sharma (1987) called for studies to determine antecedents to consumer ethnocentrism and to apply the CETSCALE across geographic and regional segments. This dissertation addresses a void in the literature by examining antecedents; Inglehart's Materialism/Post Materialism (1977) and Holbrook's Nostalgia (1993), and outcome variables; product purchase preference, of consumer ethnocentrism across sub-cultures postulated to …

This dissertation investigates the ladies' library associations in Southwestern Michigan from the middle nineteenth century through the early twentieth century to explore the impact of these organizations as agents of reform and in shaping public space. Ladies' library association records provide a major component of this study. Association records, consisting of constitutions, bylaws, minutes, treasurer records, book catalogs, yearbooks, and published reports yield valuable information to analyze and interpret the activities of ladies' library associations. Bertha Von Suttner's "Die Waffen Nieder": A Rhetorical Analysis, Kirsten W. Vuissa

Bertha von Suttner lived in fin-de siècle Vienna. She wrote her romantic novel Die Waffen nieder in 1889 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905 for the novel’s influence on the German peace movement. This thesis looks at the effect Suttner’s gender had on the novel and its reception. As a woman writing about peace, Suttner was aware of the societal limitations placed upon her treatment of a political subject. Suttner carefully and consciously chose the novel’s genre. Her synthesis of content and form epitomizes her pacifist and feminist cause. The protagonist’s rhetorical language and the novel’s genre compliment …

Les romans Xala de Sembène Ousmane et La grève des Bàttu d’Aminata Sow Fall mettent en scène quelques uns des personnages les plus mémorables de l’Afrique postcoloniale en proie à des crises individuelles mais dont l’impact se fait sentir partout dans la communauté. A la différence des études déjà faites sur ces romans qui se concentrent sur leur thématique, dans cet essai, je propose d’examiner le processus de création littéraire qui unit les deux romans dans un jeu intertextuel. Les relations palimpsestiques entre ces deux romans mettent en valeur la dimension esthétique, souvent mise à l’écart, de la littérature africaine.
