History

Silicon Valley is a unique place in a unique moment of time. To say that it exists within history seems obvious; what might be less apparent is that Silicon Valley also has come to define both the practice and the subject of history. History and the exciting technologies born and bred in Silicon Valley are intimately linked. These ties were highlighted in a remarkable series of events and presentations sponsored by the Center for Science, Technology, and Society (CSTS) in October 2001. This issue of STS NEXUS captures the insights of those presentations.

Team ministry is one of the new trends in church ministry. Of course, team ministry is not all that new. Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt with a team, Jesus trained a team of leaders to start the church, and Paul planted churches through a team. Working with teams, however, does present us with new challenges in today’s complex world. As an experienced executive pastor responsible to lead staff teams in larger churches, Chuck Olson presents some new ideas on how to build team unity and spirit in his article “The Values of a Team.”

A frequently told story in Church history concerns the call of Artemus Millet to work on the Kirtland Temple. With variations here and there, historians have related the story as follows: Joseph Smith, in the company of other brethren, is walking where the Kirtland Temple will be built. He wonders aloud who could superintend its construction, and Joseph Young (or Brigham Young or Lorenzo Young) recommends an acquaintance named Artemus Millet, who lives in Canada. The Prophet then sends Brigham Young to Canada to baptize Millet and bring him to Kirtland with one thousand dollars. Historians then relate that Brigham …

The Casasola Legacy In El Paso, Samuel E. Sisneros

This article brings to light the historical context of El Paso’s unknown and uncelebrated connection to the legendary Casasola family photo dynasty in Mexico. The local El Paso Casasola portrait studio photographer and owner did not capture iconic Mexican Revolutionary images like those of his contemporary famed photographer family members in Mexico City, but instead he recorded the visual memory of ordinary individuals and families residing in the US/Mexico border region.

The political satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are largely celebrated for their nightly television programs, which use humor to offer useful political information, provide important forums for deliberation and debate, and serve as sites for alternative interpretations of political reality. Yet, when the two satirists more directly intervene in the field of politics—which they increasingly do—they are often met by a chorus of criticism that suggests they have improperly crossed normative boundaries. Artworks In The Celestial Room Of The First Nauvoo Temple, Jill C. Major

Because of the scant time the first Nauvoo temple was open for sacred ordinances, portraits of prominent Nauvoo citizens were borrowed to adorn the temple walls. Brigham Young and the temple portrait for display in the temple. The presence of these images demonstrates how carefully Brigham Young and the temple committee arranged every detail of the temple experience to make it meaningful and purposeful, even while they planned to abandon the City of Joseph. Knowing about the portraits also adds to our knowledge of the importance of art in the Nauvoo culture. What follows is an identification of the portraits …

More Than An Index: The First Reference Guide To The Doctrine And Covenants As A Window Into Early Mormonism, Grant Underwood

When the Doctrine and Covenants came off the press in Kirtland, Ohio, in September 1835, readers found two reference tools in the back of the book. The first, a three-page section titled "Index," is really more of a table of contents. It lists sequentially the seven lectures "of faith" and the 102 sections of "Part Second" found in that original edition, citing the page number where each begins. Then follows "Contents," also somewhat mislabeled. As seen in the appendix below, "Contents" looks like an index in that it is organized alphabetically.
