The History Of The Gospel Quartet Movement In Louisiana, Joanne Lafaye Walker
The History Of The Gospel Quartet Movement In Louisiana, Joanne Lafaye Walker
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
~The full history of the Gospel Quartet movement in Louisiana is so vast and complex that even now much remains untold. The various stages of cultural evolution that constitute this musical tradition serve as a repository for all the components which have defined and governed the existence of quartets and their role in black expression." Although the preceding is a quote from author Joyce Jackson's book The Changing Nature of Gospel Music: A Southern Case Study, it has significance when studying the aspect of the Gospel Quartet Movement in Louisiana. In the following discussion, the writer will examine the ways …

The Illusion Of Realism In Film, Andrew Kania
The Illusion Of Realism In Film, Andrew Kania
Philosophy Faculty Research
Gregory Currie, arguing against recent psychoanalytic and semiotic film theory, has defended various realist theses about film. The strongest of these is that ‘weak illusionism’—the view that the motion of film images is an illusion—is false. That is, Currie believes film images really do move. In this paper I defend the common-sense position of weak illusionism, firstly by showing that Currie underestimates the power of some arguments for it, especially one based on the mechanics of projection, and secondly by showing that film images exhibit neither garden-variety motion, nor a special response-dependent kind.

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
If you hung around CLAGS during Spring semester, you ran into a lot of fruitfully provocative contradictions. Take late April, for instance. On the 24th, Marcia Gallo presented her work-in-progress -- a dissertation on the Daughters of Bilitis -- in our Colloquium Series and noted how many of the lesbians who were active in the organization since its founding in 1955 disavowed any serious political aims. "We just wanted to have fun," Gallo reported them saying to her in the extensive interviews she has been doing as part of her research.
